Habana is at least as fast as Nokwe, Elsom was keeping right on Jongi's tail in a straight sprint.

doesnt habana do the 100 in 10.2? still think Caucau's quicker when he wants to be

So.... With the 2009 season going, anyone noticed any new speed merchants? Here are my current "I think he is the fastest in his class" guesses:

Fastest Back-line player in world rugby: I'm still going with Tonderai Chavhanga here. No one has ever caught him...

Fastest Forward player in world rugby: Very tough to call. I think it's between Ryan Kankowski and Pierre Spies...

Here are some players i have noticed that are not necessarily the fastest in their class, but can definitely burn:

JP Pieterson - managed to mow down Lelia Masaga, and burnt Drew Mitchell (loved it)!
Tommy Bowe - Burnt Shane Williams (who is no slouch at his ripe young age). Also has good long strides, almost looks like he glides!
Danwel Demas - The Cheetahs flyer looks funny running with that long hair, but i have seen him catch a couple of speedsters!
Leigh Halfpenny - From what i have seen, this guy seems to have some good wheels on him!

I'd say Tom James is quicker than Leigh Halfpenny at the Blues, he just doesn't look it with his long rangey strides.

Ugo Monye for hunting down supposedly 'the fastest guy on the pitch' (thanks Andy Nichol) against Scotland; for burning Malzieu.

Paul Sackey for smoking Mark Jones for England's 1st try against Wales

Tom Varndell as well for these 2 tries, especially the 2nd one

Well, watching that clip of Monye 'catching' Evans, it's quite obvious he had the angle on him, though he still showed serious gas to get there.

Dwane Chambers, Castleford Tigers 100m Personal Best 9.97secs[/b]

Doesn't count. He never played a game in his life, and besides, this concerns Union more.

he played a couple of league games...!

rugby union i think it is a south african fella who could run 10.01 Steven Williams but i cant find a link. i remember hearing it on a radio show in Australia years ago

the fastest i have ever seen was an ex 110m hurdles sprinter and welsh player called Nigel WALKER he trained with Colin Jackson and Linford Christie.

Jonah Lomu's time for the 100 was about 10.8 secs so thats pretty fast for a 100kg+ guy[/b]

Jonnah admitted in his autobiography that this time was set when he was at school, ie. before he was over 100 kg, and timed by someone with a hand held stopwatch, which have a fair amount of human error. He also said that this was a significant amount quicker than he has ever run so I would be skeptical as to weather he is actually that fast...

As far as the fastest player I would have to say varndell. he absolutely burned Lote Tuqiri playing sevens at the commonwealth games a few years ago, and it didn't look like he was at full stretch either...

Ah i think it was in Christian Cullen's book or Gordan Teitjen's book that said Lomu was the quickest over 10m in the AB's squad (probably inbetween the early to late 90's). Im assuming he would been or if not, near 100kgs. That's some acceleration for a big guy and especially when you had Cully and Umaga (in his wing days) in the team.

I hope all 148 idiot's that voted for Habana watched him get his ass mowed down by Francis Fainifo. Seriously, you guys need to watch rugby before commenting...

*EDIT: Tonderai Chavhanga is still the fastest rugby union player...

Who was that South African winger that scored 3 tries? Henno Mentz? He looks pretty fast, covers a lot of ground with his strides

Yeah. He is pretty fast! You should try to find highlights of the Stormers vs. Lions game where the Lions scored a break away try. Jacques Fourie (who is no slouch) was caught within seconds by Chavhanga (who tore his hamstring while doing it). Fourie passed to Mentz who gassed the Nacqalavouki (SP?). He looks funny when he runs though. As if he is running for his life. lol.

I think Habana winning has more to do with more people have watched Habana over people like Caucau. I think it is also important to remember that a track is a very diffrent thing to a rugby field, in which you are bound to run slower by at least half a second.

Players "smocking" other players plays soooo many variables such as fitness, the angle the players run as well as who is generally faster on the night. In my opinion the fastest people I have seen on a rugby field look to me like Christian Cullen and Rupeni Caucaunibuca. Also itis important to remember that people such as Chavanga and Varnell look very impressive in club matches however there is a huge diffrence between showing up someone from a club then playing international rugby, in which I think people such as Habana, Rokocoko and Williams have all shone their worth.

It's got nothing to do with who they play for, or whether or not it's international. This thread is called "fastest player", which means exactly that. It doesn't matter who is on the International front, or on the club front. What matters is whether or not the player is faster than any other rugby player out there. Quite frankly, it's not a debate. The fastest player, is the fastest player. In rugby Union, that happens to be Tonderai Chavhanga. That's just how it is, until someone faster comes along. But for now, he is the fastest professional rugby union player today. -end of.

Talk about a narrow point of view...And what are you messuring Chavhanga's speed by? The fact he has bet a few people in a sprint? I gave reasons to why that alone is subjective as it depends on too many variables. I think there are faster players out there and if Chavhanga was so fast and noone cane catch him then why isn't he a regular starter for the Springboks?

As I said and I will explain it again for you, when you play in the Super 14 every countries talent is split into at least four diffrent franchises, diluding the talent, therefore it will be easier for someone to look very impressive and fast in a Super 14 match then it would for some one to look very impressive in an international as the standard of playing in an International is generally higher. I'm not saying he isn't the fastest man in rugby, however I am saying you can't be sure that he is as there is no way of measuring it and he hasn't to my knowledge beaten Habana's track record anyway, so there is no way to know - end of.
