F1 Racing

Glad I only watch the highlights. I've no idea who I want to win or even succeed. I kind of liked Ocon until the last race when he was a bit of a muppet. I like Albon due to his panache with overtakes and horrible luck with podiums. But overall, there is a major personality vacuum within F1, both inside and outside the cockpit. Where are the characters like uh, Mika, Damon and Schumi.

I have a stronger opinion on 'sprint' races in F1. Absolutely idiotic. In motorbikes they can work as the main race / races are shorter, usually around 45mins. In F1 they:

i) undermine the relevance of qualifying
ii) give big teams an opportunity to make the starting grid for the main event more predictable
iii) provide a spoiler for viewers about what the main race may be like (e.g. race pace).

What am I missing (positive or negative)?

Agreed on the sprint races. Hamilton in Brazil last year showed what a sham they were.

Yeah the Sprint races are absolutely another attempt to Hollywood F1.

I find the characters interesting to be honest. Leclerc and Gasly are my favourites, two cool, fashionable guys who seem able to have a laugh. I like what Verstappen brings to the sport, ruthless, reckless and highly talented is an entertaining combo bit he'd be one of the last guys I'd go for a beer with. I can't warm to Hamilton one but but see the allure there too. The McLaren guys are fun, I like Lando a lot but have started bro find Danny Ric a bit annoying (doesn't help that I think his attitude has been rotten while in uncompetitive cars).

The lack of competition hasn't helped, the battles we have had in the hybrid era Ver/Ros v Hamilton have been toxic and tiresome. Hopefully Leclerc and Verstappen can be a bit more like Hakkinen and Schumacher in terms of respect for each other and I think there'll be a battle between them because RB look stronger.

Yeah I think Verstappen is a good personality for the sport. He doesn't mind being a bit of a villain. There's a lot of young drivers at the moment too, who I think will grow into it. I found some of the clashes in F1 last year great watching. Even off the track Horner and Wolff, while a bit tiresome had its moments.

I have to say though, that Formula 1 has such a high concentration of manchildren in the sport.

Haven't really been watching long enough to have an opinion on the sprint races.

It's weird how toxic the fanbase is as well - if you try and look up anything to do with the sport on social media there are nutters who put football fans to shame

I'm not a big fan sprint races - they're literally just to sell saturday tickets cause people weren't turning up to qualifying in the numbers the suits wanted

If they want to have a short form they should go real wacky with it - have the sprint, but award points for fastest corners, top speed on certain points of the track, best reactions on the start, highest G force achieved, etc. not just have a shorter version of the regular race

I find the sprint races a bit pointless. It's shorter distance so you kinda need to take more risks but the reward is much lower, leading to drivers not taking those risks. If you get it wrong in the sprint, you also hinder yourself for the main race and it simply isn't worth it. Personally, I think the sprint format would work better if it was deemed a 2nd race at the same track and the result did not impact on the main race. If they do that, I think it should then be done on all tracks or none at all.

Essentially the sprint would simply be all out racing, no pitting except for if it rains. The main race would then be the more tactical one. Although in reality the results would likely be the same for both.

I flipped off a cyclist wearing a Red Bull helmet the other day so I think Verstappen is doing something right.

It would be great if the cars had a little more personality. Bring back Colin Chapman and have the cars be a little more unique.

Give me formula one drifting qualifying races right now

Saw a man driving a UK reg Mercedes SLK clip a child drinking a red bull with his left number last week. Nature is healing.

So... Ehhhh... Verstappen is going to pull the second best car to the championship again isn't he.

Hate all the tight, twisty parts of the track, it's like a kart circuit in areas. Verstappen is not exactly in the 2nd worst car, that RB is way faster in a straight line than the Ferrari, to the extent a Ferrari with DRS barely reels it in. Knowing the car behind you will not be able to close the gap even with DRS is pretty big.

Is it second best? Its 7mph quicker on the straights today.

This track is utterly **** though.
Sainz pulling away from Perez would suggest to me it is. Sainz isn't much quicker if at all. I'm a Leclerc fan but think Verstappen has pace no one else does on the track right now.

Yeah but Red Bull are also notoriously **** to their second driver. I'm just saying I don't think there's much in the two cars but that straight line speed is everything today.

The problem is there's nothing exciting about those sections they look terrible and don't open up any opportunity to overtake, but they don't look super technical either. Just about everything has just been done in the straights with DRS.

Are they? Vettel was allowed to beat the veteran Webber, Ricciardo was allowed to beat the 4 time champ Vettel, Verstappen was allowed to beat the form driver Ricciardo.

Verstappen is the only one who has put massive distance between drivers since RB were a competitor.

I think Ferrari marginally have a better car but genuinely think Verstappen has pace no one else does right now. Race craft is a different thing but these new cars seem far more suited to him.

Agreed, boring race despite a lot of close battles.

Very strange collision. Norris and Gasly such clean drivers that you have to presume driver error.

Merc sending it as a result.

Why VSC then actual safety car?

Not sure why they can't clean this up pretty easially.
