[EOYT] Wales vs. South Africa 09/11/13

Lambie should be at 10 and Willie at 15.

I think looking at long term development and deployment that would probably be the right thing but IMO it could have been worse and I am happier with this than most Bok selection the last couple of years.

Well I like this team a lot!

Everything as expected. And I understand HM choice at Lock. Flip and PSDT are the only locks in the squad that can play 5. And we all knew beforehand that it was highly unlikely that PSDT would get a run-on debut.

As for the Backs. We lose a bit of pace, but get an advantage in defence. And in wet conditions, this will be a factor to consider.

Can't see much fault with that team. Boks to win by 12

Why can't Etzebeth play 5? He runs the WP line-out and I'd argue is a better line-out operator than Flip. This thing of no.4 and no.5 lock is nothing but convention. There is also no reason why you can't have 2 locks there that have absolutely nothing to do with the line-out and that you have a backrower make the calls, be the primary jumper. Hell, it's also only convention to have the hooker through the ball in. That said these players tend to do these things for a reason; locks are usually tall with good reach while jumping while the hookers have probably practiced throughing in during school years and are just more comfortable but I am digressing. To get back to my point; there is no legitimate reason to include FvdM ahead of any of our 3 best locks.

Flip? Really?

Lambie should be at 10 and not at 15. First time this year I'm not happy with selection at all.

Although that might be because HM benched Willie.

DON'T BENCH WILLIE. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT. Willie is the type of player that would tear a NH side into shreds.

I'm going to sit in the corner and cry for a bit.

edit: Excited to see Jacque back though.

Yeah, I would really have loved to see Lambie outside of FdP with some decent service for a change with Le Roux at 15 for the counter-attack and to be a 2nd play-maker joining the line like only he can for SA. Those two changes and I think we would have had some nice balance to our backline. That said Morne Steyn with Lambie at 15 is better than with Kirchner at 15.

Well I think it's more of a balancing act. I agree that Flip shouldn't play. But He and Etzebeth has been the only 2 locks that have been part of the bok group this whole season. Neither Bakkies nor PSDT was with the team beforehand. And while we all welcome the new additions to the team, there has to be some form of continuity. I think the fact that Frans is starting at 3 also had an impact. with no. 5 lock scrumming behind him, it could be a big problem having 2 debutants at the tighthead side of the scrum. especially against a Welsh team that can actually scrum.

Maybe on a dry SH field. But we don't know what Willie can do on a wet field, and he has been prone to handling errors more than others.

Also, just Because Pat had a good semi (like I had last night) and final, doesn't warrant him replacing Morne immediately. Morne has been on fire all year...

So glad le Roux isn't starting. He was quickly becoming one of my new favourite players, he's nearing the perfect attacking player with balance, hands, pace and vision. Could've bear seeing what he'd do to us. Hopefully he's selected if the Boks play England.

Agreed, looked very dangerous in the Rugby Championship. Kind of reminded me of Beale when he first started, you had the sense he could do anything in attack from nothing

According to South African readers, on Sport24, this is the Strongest team HM has selected in the past 2 years.

I tend to agree with that.

In yesterday's press conference, HM said that he was so happy with Jaque Fourie's choice to rejoin the Bok-group and the difference he made in the organisation of the backline.

I'm really excited about this match-up

I also agree it is the strongest team under HM yet apart from the ? over Frans Malherbe. Tossing a rookie 22 year old TH in against the Welsh scrum...

I love it!

When Willie le Roux, Oosthuizen and PSdT come on it will be even a better team though.

When I told my dad what the team is that's gonna play on the weekend (he's in Hospital for an operation), his first response was "Strong bench". And that made me wonder that the tactic HM might employ is to tire the welsh players out, and then put the guys with the afterburners on in the last 20 minutes to run them ragged... Whether it will work is another question...

Well no doubt that is a bench with a lot of potential for impact; pace, workrate and Le Roux's creativity. In fact the only place where we fall flat when the bench player comes on is with Pienaar. Should really have looked at throwing someone like Van Zyl in at the deep end; he can't be worse than Pienaar surely?

He can actually.

Remember we're now north of the wall (Game of Thrones reference). Pienaar always play well in wet conditions. I think he's the contingency plan.

I'll have to see it too believe it (while I pray I won't have too); Pienaar has had enough chances to underwhelm IMO and falls squarely in the "why on Earth?" category along with FvdM and Kirchner if you ask me. Janne du Plessis has been knocking on the same door..

PS; it's not an 'A game of thrones' reference but an 'A song of fire and ice' reference damnit! People seem to forget the books were out before some of the main actors in the HBO series were even conceived! Well at least some of the books while fans were and are being totured with unreasonable waiting periods while the cnut was/is working on the series and editing 'Wild aces'.

luckily those are all positions that we have been looking at proper replacements for these guys. for Jannie we have Coenie and Frans and even Louwrens. For Flip we have PSDT, and at some stage Andries Bekker. For Ruan, well there's a ****load of guys and for Kirchner we have Taute, Lambie, Willie and even Aplon

I saw on SSN that Eli Walker is out with a hamstring injury; Liam Williams replaces him in the starting line-up.
