England Rugby 2019/20 Thread

23 of them, by my count:

Cole (36), Cowan-Dickie (30), George (32), Marler (33), Sinckler (30), Mako (32)

Kruis (33), Launchbury (32), Lawes (34)

Billy (30), Wilson (33)

Faz (31), Ford (30), Heinz (36), Youngs (34)

Francis (33), JJ (32), Slade (30), Manu (32)

Daly (30), May (33), McConnochie (31), Nowell (30)

May would be an interesting one to watch; he's surely going to lose a bit of pace, but he's improved his all-round game so much over the last few years that I wouldn't be too surprised to see him evolve rather than drop off.
I can see Cole, Marler, Lawes, Wilson, Francais, McC to go and the rest to push, on may its a tough one as he really has improved his all round game but pace is his USP. Can see Big joe pushing him out if aspects of defence and aerial game improve.

May's a natural back 3 player. He's got a decent aerial game and even if he loses a bit of pace he'll still have plenty of gas. Game awareness infinitely better than it was.

Full back?

Natural back 3 player ? I would have to disagree with that.
Not a lot regarding rugby comes naturally to him apart from being able to run fast, which is why he has received so many plaudits for getting better at certain aspects of the game, aerial ,defence etc.
Even Attacking with the ball shows up certain weaknesses ie running sideways across the pitch to look for space to outsprint defenders rather than using footwork to go around them or use his physicality (a la Thorley, Nowell)
Once he starts to slow down he'll be of no use to England .

How many of our players will be 30 or over if we kept the same squad from the WC?

Players over 30 can and should play and play well but we also need younger players incase of players drop off.

If you're going to drop players down the pecking order (and that's all it should be) due to age, then "30 in 4 years time" is simply way too young - "30 now" and there's a discussion to be had (and I'd be in favour, as long as it's "dropping down the pecking order").
34 is far from being too old to be playing very well at international level, but things may be starting to slip, be it outright pace, recovery times from playing/training or simple accumulation of injuries for the more prone.

Quite honestly, anyone thinking of jettisoning the currently 26 year olds because of age, is fetishising youth rather than thinking through their position. That or wanting change for change's sake.

Cole, Lawes, Youngs and Heinz, even Marler, Kruis, Wilson, Francis & May if you have to (though moving on from Cole and Francisc is no great loss). Tell them to get some R&R whilst we train up their eventual replacements, but neither age, nor 2 years out of the squad will count against them come 2022 when we start targeting France23, so long as they're playing well.
If you need more churn than those 9 players across all 6 units of the team (not to mention however many others are injured), then look to the deadwood who were only there to make up the numbers without complaining, rather than basing it on age (AKA, "merit") which adds Singleton, McConnochie whilst confirming Heinz and Francis.

Those 11 names (assuming 0 injury concerns...) is 1/3 of the squad, which is verging on too many already, though it's also 2, maybe 3 starters which isn't so bad.
It also opens up spots for a complete tight 5, a backrower, 2 halfbacks a centre and 2 back3 players (though we were already taking too many centres and back3 players to Japan as it was) - personally, I'd be happy enough to do just that, but keep a SH around to help bed in the new guys, and I'd be expecting Lawes and May to tear up trees and force their way back in within 12 of the 18 months I'm giving them "off" (mind, I'd be tempted to tell the entire first choice 23 from Japan to spend the summer on a beach and get a full pre-season in with their clubs - I just like the idea of the older guys getting 2 summers R&R)

Yes, because May's only asset is his pace. Not his brilliant kick chase, his relentless harrying of the opposition back three, not his lethal finishing, his excellent offloading, sidestepping on a sixpence or his physical breaking of tackles again and again. No, he's scored more tries than any other international over the last two years because of his pace and his pace alone. And once that's gone, he'll be useless.

In other news, Beast Mtawarira was only good coz he was fat. o_O

I'm sure he played fullback for Gloucester in his early days. Any Gloucester supporters on here that could corroborate that?

Not a Gloucester supporter but yes he did, and he's done it a handful of times at Tigers as well. Didn't look particularly out of place either IMO. @Tigs Man may be able to give more of an insight though.

Daily Fail reckon Ben Curry is going to be in the squad,

They also reckon Jones wants him to play scrumhalf, which I can only attribute to Jones taking to **** out of journos or something?

Ben's got a good kicking game, if I remember rightly, and at 17 stone, he would probably be the biggest scrumhalf on the planet. Could be Eddie looking for something different, as he often does, but yeah, more likely he's just ******* off journos. :)

I believe pre-diet Ben Youngs would like a word.
