Carling joining England squad in a leadership mentoring role. Thoughts?
The dressing room's not listening to me and its all because I'm Australian. Wouldn't it help if I bought in a fine upstanding English chap who'd played a bit of rugger and has a nice line in self deprecation?
Much as I like Carling, he has no relevance to the modern game. I get that its not a coaching role, and there definitely is a leadership vacuum,. but that's not going to be solved by a few powerpoints from an ex captain who'd retired when most of his audience were barely out of nappies. Couple of weeks with the Marines might help more....
I could perhaps understand the odd session from a past great, but the reports are 2 days a week when in camp.
Part of the thinking simply seems to be because he's English to help understand the pride in the shirt, which suggests that Jones is struggling to connect a bit with the players. I am sceptical that he really has a clear plan on what he's doing at the moment, he just seems to be making it up on the hoof.
