England Rugby 2018/19 Thread

Basically English jounro not taking in the context of what Marler said and making it more clickbaity (Shocker)
Not just the context - even having to paraphrase rather than quote, as the words used make it clear that the headline is wrong.

Bangers situation is 'possibly' more complex he suffers from severe anxiety from being away from home. Somerset have said they make special arrangements for away matches for him to help manage it. He tried going abroad to play in 2009 but left early in the tournament as he couldn't cope.

It should be noted Cricket is very diffrent to rugby in the respect of how much time you spend away from home, a test or county championship game will require the most of a week away. You will rarely travel to a one-day game and back home again in the same day. If your lucky enough to play for the Lions or the first team internationally and you play in all formats you will spend the entire Winter away from home whereas apart from World Cups rugby tours last about a month.

Not saying Marler shouldn't put family first but being an international cricketer is an extremely hard strain and this looks slightly diffrent.

Plus Banger is one of all time great English cricketers if international retirement hadn't had to come so soon his record may have been better than Cooks. Somerset have profitted greatly from having a world class batsman not playing international cricket (well technically we have two but Hildreth is a completely diffrent story).

I wasn't trying to claim it was exactly the same, maybe I should have compared him to Trott who quit England due to anxiety issues.

But Marler has clarified from getting anxiety from going away. Similar, but obviously not as bad as Trescothick.

Do you not think professional rugby players get more time with their family than normal working people? having seen some the typical week things they do, i definitely see my family less than an pro rugby player does.

Well I can agree to a point but when I was working 4 on 4 off shifts a few years ago the worse days to work were Saturday and Sunday. My wife was stuck at home with the kids over the weekend while I was stuck at work. Yes you get time off in the week but my wife would be at work and the kids at Nursery/School so there was always a lot of dead time.

Personally I would hate to leave my family for a summer tour/Lions tour and if there is extra duties at weekends it just makes things difficult when you have kids.

I take my hat off to him. He has chosen his family over the extra England money and I bet his domestic career extends because of it.

I think I do too, but of course we're only judging on what's been said publicly and our own perceptions. Only Marler and those close to him really know all the factors at play and I doubt it's quite as simple as presented (and frankly none of our business!).

He seems very comfortable with his decision - you can only call it as you see it, but let's hope he feels that way at the end of his career or on a 6N Friday when the national team's in Paris and he's stuck on the motorway heading up to Falcons or Sharks.

Didn't realise Simmonds injury was quite so bad. Terrible news for him, I hope he can come back just as strong.

From the back row that's Binny, Simmonds, Underhill, Hughes, Willis, the odd Curry and Shields all having been sidelined for extended periods over the last year or so. Our RWC flankers will be Haskell and Robshaw - they might not be much good, but they do generally turn up.

Simmonds has done his ACL hasn't he? Probably his season over but generally these injuries are well looked after these days and I don't think it will affect his performances post ie his pace or explosiveness.

Hopefully our back rows will stay fit now and we can choose from these options.

6 Mercer / Underhill
7 Curry / Kvesic (if he keeps up these performances consistently)
8 Billy V / Mercer

No shields or hughes? Mercer is too soon for him with little experience at that level if any.
Id go with
6. Underhill/shields
7. TCurry/ kvesic( at a push, would have liked willis to get a shot)
8. Billy/hughes

As injury cover
Simmonds(pre injury)/ mercer

I still like ewers as 6 but no experience this close same as kvesic but not to many good 7s to choose from.

Im genuinely not a big Hughes fan Scotty. I just don't see enough of an impact from him which I expect coming from a supposed big carrier. I actually think Simmonds would make more impact carrying etc.

Shields I cant really comment on as I haven't seen enough of him to make a fair judgement.

The problem we have...in the back row (and other positions) is we either have young potentially fantastic talent...or lots of proven unexplosive steady away players on their way out.
Im at the stage now, to say ditch the steady oldies and just go for the youngsters.

People rave about Robshaws workrate...well Curry, Underhill, Kvesic, Simmonds all have great workrate. At international level you need more. Pocock is the hardest working backrower out there ...going on stats, but he is also a master jackler etc.

Its actually a concern, so close to a world cup, that it appears so many of the positions aren't settled in yet.

And any that are...are players considered to be at the end of their powers - Robshaw, Brown, Cole etc...

English understatement.

1. Nailed - Mako
2. Nailed - Hartley (c)
3. Up for grabs, but suspect Cole may stagger through. Ditching an 80 cap TH just before a RWC would be a big call.
4 & 5 perm whichever 2 are on form from loads. All decent but there aren't 2 clear and obvious outstanding first choices.
6&7 What's the opposite of nailed?
8 Nailed - Binny,. If fit, which is a very big if.
9 Nailed - Youngs. Has shortcomings, but don't see anyone else overtaking him.
10. The nail's in the wood, but not fully hammered down. Ford's place not as secure as it was. Cips fondness for a night out may have helped.
11. Nailed - May
12. Nailed - Farrell. Or at least Faz's nailed, but possibly not in this shirt
13. Far from nailed.
14. Formerly nailed for Watson, but not with his injury, Daly and the emergence of Big Joe to consider.
15. Nailed - Brown, provided his legs hold out.

The problem with the backrow is that England's defensive tactics required big hitters who would send the attacker back, hence Itoje coming in. However those tactics were completely exposed in this year's six nations. Hence the South Africa tour where he stuck in Tom Curry for every game, who, if you include the barbarians game, only got subbed once at 65 mins for Hughes in the first test and then played every minute after.

The other problem with the back row is that there are some form players who for some reason don't meet all of EJ's criteria and so don't get a look in regardless. Again back to S.A tour, Hughes on the bench for first and second games and comes on in both. Hughes starts the third game with Simmonds on the bench instead and who replaces Hughes? Wilson. Nothing against Mark Wilson, I think he's a fantastic player, but in terms of form at 8 in the premiership it's Simmonds all day long.

Having seen the Boks ABs epic, what's a good return for us from the AIs? Can anyone really see us winning more than 2?
