Callard as interim Head Coach... but with some pretty decent assistants, notably Richard Hill in an official specialist role. Are the RFU just hoping Hill can teach someone to play openside in the next few years? Or is he slowly moving into a wider coaching role with the RFU/Harlequins?

The RFU pump a lot of money into academy/grassroots rugby, i don't think they'd want to pick abroad.

Still, with the number of Saxons fixtures planned for this year he might as well earn his salary covering the U20s job.

There appears to be little difference as French player did not do that much wrong. Apparently, (have not read the report) pleaded guilty though and got time off....

Galarza got 9 weeks for a less dangerous incident. Ashton has no reason to grab the guys head but does anyway. That's reckless and he'll get a 6 weeker I reckon. Unless we get "but its the 6 nations" process in which case he'll be warned most sternly over his future conduct.

Think Protheroe is only qualified on residency grounds for us although I'll admit that's only a *think* - I did quite a bit of digging on google without finding a definitive answer.

Believe there's reason to be fairly excited about this squad.

Also, is there a record for most capped U20 international? Because I suspect that's going to be Jack Walker after this season.

Nope residency is only for senior rugby I think.

MJ played NZ U20 despite having no ties I think.

He still has 2 years to go before he can claim residency I think.

Iirc, the RFU doesn't control what happens with ERC citings, so no dice there. Hopefully.

Correct but there is previous with regard to international players being given sentences by the ERC that do not inconvenience them.....Healy seems to ring a bell couple of years ago?

Dunno if he is or not; but residency for junior rugby is only required if the junior team is the (designated) 2nd senior team - and binds the player to that country.
So only the WRU need to worry about residency qualifications at U20 level; because only the WRU can't tell the difference between "junior" and "senior"


As for fingers in the eye; I believe it's a 12 week minimum ban if found guilty; and a maximum 50% dispensation for apologising.

This can only be a good thing.

George Smith has been working with Haskell. So I hope that after Smith meets and works with Kvesic too in the EPS training squad, that he will see Kvesic as the better prospect at openside!

Ultimately the choice of Haskell vs. Kvesic will come down to two things, in order:

1. Was Eddie just trolling the press? (See also: Hartley as captain.)

2. Are England going to stuff it up the jumper at Murrayfield? In which case they won't be looking for a quick back row, but rather a big, powerful one.

Smith coming in is nice, if it happens, but his control will be much smaller than selection and gameplan. The best use of him would not be to find a future 7, which Eddie's got a good history of, but improving the entire team's breakdown technique. Particularly clearouts from the tight five.

Not sure his appointment will bear any fruit for a while too; especially if it's only part-time for the first six months.

Weren't the press wrong about the leaked squad? These leaks do seem to contradict what he said in his press conference about a proper 7 and the captain being your best player.
