England 6N 2016 - General Chit Chat

Not sure why you think Maitland was deluded. He was right.

After saying that Scotland were defeated 20-0 with England leaving about another 20 out there. You were absolutely torn to pieces and at no point looked like competing and then went on to get the wooden spoon with no wins. Please tell me by what metric that is "as good as England"? Scotland did well against Australia but still lost. Can you point to any big games Scotland have actually won?

Itoje is almost in the 23, according to reports - still big question marks of Lawes fitness and Maro is next in line.

Should be ahead of Lawes anyway IMO

Yeah I hope he gets his chance at Murrayfield even as a sub. I think he can prove that he should be in the 23 on merit.

If you believe Jones*, his omission probably had less to do with "good enough" and more to do with "I want to get making him an international absolutely right and that involves waiting a week or two at this moment". Not utterly sure why, but I can respect the sentiment.

*Given Jones' history, I'm doing the respect of taking most of what he says with a pinch of salt.

Our side to face Scotland:

Mako Vunipola
Dylan Hartley
Dan Cole
George Kruis
Joe Launchbury
Maro Itoje
Matt Kvesic
Billy Vunipola

Ben Youngs
Owen Farrell
Jack Nowell
Ollie Devoto
Elliot Daly
Anthony Watson
Mike Brown

Goes into more depth here: http://fourballsblog.blogspot.fr/2016/02/four-ballss-england-team-to-face.html

Mainly talking about how Itoje and Daly have been warranting their spots for a while, and that Farrell has to start over Ford with Devoto at 12 if Jones wants Slade as his long term 12, so that you can just swap Devoto in as a like for like replacement instead of changing the system around every other game.

I don't really understand people lambasting Eddie already ? His squad was good . His 23 selection was more conservative than some of us wanted including me but I'll forget it if we beat Scotland on Saturday and the players have reacted well to him and his training sessions . He also regularly says the right things to the press . I'm really happy so far with what Eddie has done

Let's be honest we have come from Stuart Lancaster and Andy Farrell with Mouritz Botha and Phil Dowson to Eddie Jones and Paul Gustard and Maro Itoje and Jack Clifford ! What's not to be happy about

I'm not sure if you were quoting from this or are just able to read Eddie like a book, but he says as much here: http://www.englandrugby.com/news/rbs-nations-maro-needs-time-jones/

"I want him to be a 60-Test player. I don't want him to be a 10 or 20-Test player. 60-Test players start their career well and build on that. Some players you can expose too late, some too early. My gut feeling on him is that he's definitely progressing, but he needs just a little more time."

There's a video of the interview somewhere, in which he explains that a bad start can lead to a player being ejected after 10 - 20 games and being written off as not good enough or being knocked off course.

Personally, I'm not sure if it's conservatism or a (potentially misplaced) sign of confidence. Who knows what his real targets are this season, or what caveats the RFU have made, but if he's confident he can get decent results with the leftovers of Lancaster's squad then he can afford to take his time capping youth.

Maybe one day England will be settled enough to not need to cap ten new players each and every year...

Well Hogg said England didn't respect Scotland and Maitland said Scotland were as good as England. Maitland was more a deluded opinion than mouthing off but Hogg was just being a child.

Leading up to a game he has to same something of that nature, if even to try and convince himself as much as convince the listener/watcher/reader.

Put like this, how would you like it if leading into an RWC match one of the English guys turned around and said "We can't beat New Zealand, they are too good for us..."?

Well, saying anything more confident than that before playing NZ is, by definition, disrespecting the Haka and the nation, and just begging for a good spear tackle; or at the very least a minor diplomatic incident, and official apology from the Queen, and visa being refused for the next 4 years.

Talk it up, why don't you keep your trap shut and focus on trying to become the 5th best team in the world IF you can win this shabby excuse for an international tournament.

People are never satisfied. They are just moaning, because they feel like doing it, contributes something.

Where's a picture of a fish munching up the bait?

Lol, does the red mist take hold so quickly and easily that you had typed this and hit submit before it dawned on you that the comment was firmly tongue in cheek?

If you're no quicker on the uptake with visual cues than you are with written ones, you must spend a lot of time in police cells!

It wasn't funny it was atypical rugby racism rearing it's ugly head once again.
English arrogance is terribly quick to come to the fore after a RWC debacle.
Practice your swimming lessons and maybe next time you will get out of your pool.

This may sound a little silly but how about play Daly at fallback. And keep Joseph just think it's a bit harsh to drop are best player at the World Cup and Brown only has a couple of years left

Crapsray, probably was going off of that article.

Because so far his selection, while mostly good, has included some genuine wtf inducing moments (Ashton, Hartley, Goode included in the 23)

And Itoje isn't in the 23, which might be reasonable, but certainly means he can't be included in the positives column just yet.

And Andy Farrell was a bad pick in the role he ended up for in England, but in a like for like comparison with Gustard, then Farrell's already picked up another two international defence jobs because of how generally good our defence was while Gustard's yet to prove himself a success in one.

And there's no guarantee that Eddie Jones will be a better England coach than Lancaster, although he is certainly getting better players to work with.

I don't want to play whack-a-mole with our new head coach. And I don't want to do it over his first 23 as I couldn't give three brass-plated f**ks really, the performance matters more than the selection and how he responds to that more than either. But I don't want to do a cheerleading act either. He's an unknown quantity and amid the good, there's some really super questionable.

I'll judge him on performances. I think most people will. But there's certainly room for criticism to date.

Whether or not you found it funny it was really blindingly obvious that it was a joke.

Diddums

I tend to mostly ignore him as he is like this a lot...........but he does make one or two decent points in his more lucid posts!!
