Drew Mitchell out of RWC

Hope he does (but doesn't play against us...)
Unfortunate injury, although a bit low of the Waratahs to blame Higginbotham.

Take a look at it, Higginbottom makes a line for Mitchell, granted he's not wanting him to get serious injury but there was intent to take him out.

Just seen this. Everyone knows how awful it is to have an injury and not be able to play, but its absolutely awful to see a player who was likely to light up the RWC resigned to the fact he'll miss out on the biggest competition in the world. Can't comprehend how he must feel.

Wish him all the best.

Even I was bummed to see his injury, and I hate those bloody Aussies! He's just been in such excellent form you want to see him play.
Maybe but there's hope for him yet?

Mitchell in shock RWC return?

Sydney - Injured Australia wing Drew Mitchell, who dislocated his ankle last Saturday, is targeting a return to the field in time to be considered as a surprise inclusion in Robbie Deans's Rugby World Cup squad.

VIDEO: Drew Mitchell's horror ankle injury

Mitchell suffered the injury when he collided with Scott Higginbotham during the Waratahs' 19-15 loss to the Reds in their Super Rugby match in Brisbane.

Waratahs coach Chris Hickey said after the match, when it was confirmed Mitchell had dislocated his right ankle and broken a bone in his leg, that his winger was not expected to be back this year. Players with similar injuries have needed at least six months to recover.

The 27-year-old Mitchell, however, said he expected the injury to be healed within three months and the motivating factor during his rehabilitation would be to be included in Deans's World Cup squad. He had been an almost certainty prior to the injury.

"The indication I got is 12-14 weeks, it is much better news than it could have been," Mitchell was quoted as saying by Tuesday's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

"If I had been looking at the World Cup as not being an option at all, sometimes the motivation might not have been as high as it could be.

"I'll make sure that whatever day-to-day rehab stuff is required, I will do.

"It will be tedious and boring but, if that tedious and boring work is going to put me in a position to hopefully be looked at for World Cup selection, it will be worth it.

"I was immediately trying to work out how many weeks it would be before I could possibly return. It has put me in a better place than what it could have.

"Also, ever since the last World Cup when we were eliminated in the quarter-finals, from that moment I have done everything I can to get back for the next World Cup."

Australia have been drawn in Pool C with Ireland, Italy, the United States and Russia for the September 9-October 23 World Cup in New Zealand.

Im no doctor but I'm also hoping he magaes to make it as he is the form winger over the last year IMO.

I'm banking on the fact that the media hype is just that; hype. Earlier reports said that Juan Smith would miss the RWC as well but I've heard from 3 different sources that his healing and rehabilitation is giong amazingly well and he'll probably play Super rugby again this year nevermind RWC.

Both these players would push for inclusion in a current world XV so it'd be great if both could be present at rugby's greatest contest.

Just seen on twitter that he's back running next week
Too late to make the RWC? Still a couple of months to go to get fitness back and strengthen his ankle/whatever

Would love to see him make the squad,

9. Genia
10. Cooper
11. Ioane
12. JOC
13. AAC
14. Mitchell
15. Beale

Immense.

Great news for Mitchell. If he can prove he is 100% fit I'm sure Deans will pick him even if he hasn't even played any rugby, as he is very important for Australia. Mitchell himself has always said he expects he will recover in time for the RWC; looks like he might be right!

That backline could be devastating; I still remain unconvinced about having O'Connor at 12 outside Cooper. Cooper likes to run the show single-handedly so any creativity at 12 is largely wasted, and Cooper always plays better with a more direct runner outside him.

Brilliant as long as he doesn't play against us. Is sheer class. Him vs Bowe would be some match up.

Agree completely, I was just trying to fit JOC in there to show off the talent Aus have in the backs
JOC would be better than Giteau or Barnes though, I reckon
Can Ioane play 12 or just 13? Switch him and JOC round if so...

Ioane has played 13 a few times.

Yea he played there for the reds for the being of the season last year, did fairly well to.

I've never seen Ioane at 12, and I don't even particularly rate him as a 13 as his distribution is poor: his first instinct when he gets the ball is always to have a go rather than try to set up anyone else (which makes him well suited to the wing).

I do have a feeling that Robbie Deans will pick O'Connor at 12. I definately agree that he is a better option than either Giteau or Barnes, but personally I would go for a harder runner like Faingaa - he is nowhere as talented as O'Connor (or even Giteau or Barnes) but I think the Wallabies need a direct runner to complement Cooper, and he would certainly strengthen the Wallabies defense. I'd even consider Stirling Mortlock at 12.

Also would love to see Mitchell back for the RWC one of my favorite Aussies was unbelievable last year and at the being of this year

Would edit but the button ain't there.

Really hope he makes it, top class player and deserves to be there.
