Massive blow for the Wallabies

Wallaby and Waratahs winger Drew Mitchell's hopes of playing the Rugby World Cup are over after a serious ankle injury in Brisbane.

The Waratahs have confirmed that Mitchell will miss the remainder of the Super Rugby season.

Mitchell was driven from the field in the medical buggy after he tripped playing against the Reds in Brisbane with a serious ankle injury.

Mitchell was chasing a ball when he ran into the back of Scott Higginbotham and fell awkwardly.

The match was immediately stopped by referee Steve Walsh and Mitchell was clearly in pain.

Early medical reports are that he dislocated his right ankle and has a broken bone in his leg.

Mitchell had to be had to be sedated as his ankle was put back into place by medical staff on the field.

"He'll be gone for the year," said Waratahs coach Chris Hickey to Fox Sports

"It's a pretty significant injury."

"I think it rattled anyone who saw it," Waugh said.

"It was disappointing - you don't want to see that happen to anyone in the world in any sport."

The Rugby world cup runs from September the 9th to October the 23rd and Mitchell was almost certain to make the Australian World cup squad.

Sad news.
I love Drew Mitchell, and even though he's the worst defender in OZ backline, he's a helluva player, one of the smartest wing ever seen, and surely one of the quickest in world rugby!

Get well soon Drew!!!!

A big loss for the Wallabies and the Waratahs ... I would have thought Quade Cooper would get the ***le of the worst defender in the OZ backline though :)

An NH side will poach him in the next couple of years ...the dissapointment of missing this world cup might send him packing :/

Fixed ;)

Very good player.
Solid pace and an eye for the tryline.

That being said, three-quarters is arguably their most-covered position.

Turner and Ioane now? If O'Connor plays 12 that is.

Gutting, one of my favourite wingers/Australian players
Didn't look good in the match, but I was hoping it was just a small break or something like that and he'd be back

Suppose Ioane will take his wing spot now?

devestating not only for australia's wc challange but also all rugby supporters who would of seen his skill on the big stage

great shame. does free up space for Ioane though... who else would be in the frame? Turner?

Horrible news for Mitchell, the Waratahs, and Australia. I've never been a huge fan, but his form over the last year or so have been so compelling I've been forced to accept that he is a very good player. Luckily for the Wallabies they do have a bit of depth on the wing. O'Connor and Ioane would be my choice for starting wings, though it is possible they may want to use O'Connor at 12 or Ioane at 13. Lachie Turner is probably next in line for a spot, but the likes of Peter Hynes, Rod Davies, Nick Cummins, Adam Ashley-Cooper (though he will likely start at centre), Cameron Shepherd, Pat McCabe and Luke Morahan are all options as well...

Devastating news. But at least it was a winger as Aussie have lots of them. Had it been Pocock then it would mean no chance of winning the RWC.

Give his place to Digby Ioane and lets see the turtle or caterpillar or whatever it is on show at the World Cup. I´d go for him, seriously. A great player. 14 O´Connor, 15 Beale, 11 Ioane. Turner on the bench.

True, I thought Pocock was only supposed to be out for 4-6 weeks, how far away is he from a return?

Loss for Aus, however as others have said there are plenty of quality replacements

Wow. He's been the form wing in Australia in the last year. He'll really be missed.

I guess it'll come down to Lachlan Turner to replace him, or possibly a bit of a bolter in Rod Davies. They're the only two pure wingers that stick out? You could put Ioane in there, but I think moving AAC around, AGAIN would be a bad idea, as he's never really been much of a wing compared tpo him at center or fullback.

Sad news for the Wallabies, good news for the rest of us i guess. I think he has been one of the better aussie backs from the past couple seasons, gutz that this had to happen to him.

Said on twitter his surgery went well and he expects to be back at it in a few months - presume he'll still miss the WC, but better than a years lay off

Realistically with these injuries he could be back mid July early August, is that enough time to get fit for the World Cup?

Having suffered the same injury but with the ankle not going back into place until A+E. I don't think he will be fit, which is sad.

Recent reports are there is a chance he will be fit for the wc wether he gets selected or not is another thing
