[COVID-19] General Discussion

I am hoping tonight's media briefing will be considerably more informative than last night's address. Boris will be present and will apparently take questions from the media and the public. The devolved administrations refusing to adopt his new 'Stay alert' slogan is a major kick in the stones for him. This pretty much confirms that the other three home nations are no longer aligned or doing things in concert with No.10.

Last night he was encouraging those who can't work from home to return to work but to try and drive, walk or cycle there. What happens if none of these are an option? There should have been clarity on whether public transport could be used as a last resort for these workers. It's not clear. Also, I am hearing that many employers are being expected to have COVID proof workplaces established within days but many have received minimal support or guidance on how to best establish this. Perhaps employers will be 'guided by the science'.

On a positive note, it sounds as though some pubs with outdoor seating MAY be able to open on 4th July.

People in England can meet up with others outside their household in the outdoors as long as they stay 2m apart, the government has confirmed.
Not the phase I'm looking for that was clear yesterday with meeting people and socially distancing outside. Sadly it's a 6 hour round trip to see my Dad so just being able to sit outside doesn't work we need to able to visit houses.

And it cool that's not part of guidelines yet it would be slightly crazy to allow it. But all I'm asking for clear guidelines of what be allowed and at what phase.

But I hate people saying common sense that doesn't provide clarity for nusuries or parents told to go into work with school kids.

COVID has settled one massive debate. Who are really the *****? Cyclists or drivers? It's cyclists, half of the ***** are still on the footpath. If you're a cyclist, I'm not going to be apologetic, you're part of a primarily ******* group!

As a cyclist and ex-driver I always find it weird how many keep their cyclist and driving personalities completely separate. Cyclists forget what it's like to be a drive but as soon as they are a driver they forget what it's like to be a cyclist. Suffice to say they are arseholes whatever means of transport they use. Stick them on public transport and they are the sort who would take up a seat with their bags.

Fwiw I'm totally biased! I'm either a driver or a pedestrian and it's the two extremes that harm the reputation of cyclists.

The footpath cyclists wearing a full Adidas or Nike tracksuit or the 2/3 abreast lycra ridden fat yokes. Both with some weird point to prove to themselves!

Yesterday, I was walking on a narrow footpath and I'd say I saw about three cars in the 15mins between the 1st and 3rd cyclist who forced me onto the road to keep social distance.

From Facebook:

I think I've worked it out...

* 4 year olds can go to school but university students who have paid for their tuition and the accommodation that they aren't living in, can't go back to university.

* I can go to school with many 4 year olds that I'm not related to but can't see one 4 year old that I am related to.

* I can sit in a park, but not tomorrow or Tuesday but by Wednesday that'll be fine.

* I can meet one person from another household for a chat or to sunbathe but not two people so if I know two people from another household I have to pick my favourite. Hopefully, I'm also their favourite person from my household or this could be awkward. But possibly I'm not. In fact, thinking about it, I definitely wouldn't be. But as I can't go closer than 2m to the one I choose anyway so you wouldn't think having the other one sat next to them would matter - unless two people would restrict my eyeline too much and prevent me from being alert.

* I can work all day with my colleagues but I can't sit in their garden for a chat after work.

* I can now do unlimited exercise when quite frankly just doing an hour a day felt like I was some kind of fitness guru. I can think of lots of things that I would like to be unlimited but exercise definitely isn't one of them.

* I can drive to other destinations although which destinations is unclear. I was supposed to be in Brighton this weekend. Can I drive there? It's hundreds of miles away but no one has said that's wrong.

* The buses are still running past my house but I shouldn't get on one. We should just let empty buses drive around so bus drivers aren't doing nothing.

* It will soon be time to quarantine people coming into the country by air... but not yet. It's too soon. And not ever if you're coming from France because... well, I don't do know why, actually. Because the French version of coronavirus wouldn't come to the UK maybe.

* Our youngest children go back to school first because... they are notoriously good at not touching things they shouldn't, maintain personal space at all times and never randomly lick you.

* We are somewhere in between 3.5 and 4.5 on a five point scale where 5 is all of the virus and 1 is none of the virus but 2,3 and 4 can be anything you'd like it to be really. Some of the virus? A bit of the virus? Just enough virus to see off those over 70s who were told to self isolate but now we've realised that they've done that a bit too well despite us offloading coronavirus patients into care homes and now we are claiming that was never said in the first place, even though it's in writing in the stay at home guidance.

* The slogan isn't stay at home any more.So we don't have to say at home. Except we do. Unless we can't. In which case we should go out. But there will be fines if we break the rules. So don't do that.

Don't forget...

Stay alert... which Robert Jenrick has explained actually means Stay home as much as possible. Obviously.

Control the virus. Well, I can't even control my dogs and I can actually see them. Plus I know a bit about dogs and very little about controlling viruses.

Save lives. Always preferable to not saving lives, I'd say, so I'll try my best with that
one, although hopefully I don't need telling to do that. I know I'm bragging now but not NOT saving lives is something I do every day.

So there you are. If you're the weirdo wanting unlimited exercise then enjoy. But not until Wednesday. Obviously.

There's something about wheels of whatever number that brings out the inner twat in people.

But be clear that the Johnny come latelys wobbling around getting their hour / unlimited exercise on the footpath aren't even the most distant of cousins to us magnificent Lycra clad MAMILS racking up the miles astride our carbon or ***anium steeds.

For every pavement wobbler I'll raise you a boy racer thinking that emptier roads equate to personal racetracks.

Hope you're watching parliament, Boris is answering all your questions...

So with Russia whizzing up the tables and showing no signs of having even slowed the virus let alone hitting the peak, Putin has decided to end whatever semblance of lockdown they had. This is going to go very badly for them, I would not be surprised at all if by the end of the month they are pushing 1 million at the rate they are going. Brazil are probably there abouts too but have so little testing they are woefully under-reporting their numbers. Likewise India. I don't see how even with the strictest lockdown measures they won't stop the virus tearing through the slums home to millions living in already poor conditions.

Just checking the TRF's alert status.

We all still sufficiently alert in here right now?

My phone buzzed earlier there. No doubt alerting me to a flagging alert level that could have meant I lost control of the virus and who know where we could have ended up!!!

Worried about how I'm going to sleep between now and having a vaccine. Can I subcontract my alertness to someone else for parts of the day?

Trump told an Asian—American reporter to ask a question to China instead of him.

he then ended the press conference early.

he's also claiming cases are going down, we have the fewest deaths, and everyone who needs a test can get a test.

Yep, check the video I posted on the political thread. just adds to pattern of behaviour of belittling female reporters of colour. No need for accusations of the media showing "fake news" or being "bias"; the proof is there each time he does not like a question (calling it nasty) and shows his true colours. Degrading the office of POTUS every time he tries to deflect and throwing a tantrum by walking off.

Yeah I belive 11million tests as much as our governement 100,000 probably use similar dodgy counting practices as well.

Russia reporting 10,000 new cases.

There are lies, damned lies and statistics all over the place here. Who knows when / whether the whole truth will come out, but the only certainty is that both in the UK and elsewhere there have been, and will continue to be, a shed load of avoidable deaths.

In normal times I commute 25 miles each day into London. My job should be fairly secure (as should Mrs OH's) and I can work from home, but it's soul destroying and if I never see another Zoom meeting it will be too soon. I can't walk or cycle into work and the thought of public transport until there's a treatment / vaccine is just horrible. So I'm resigned to my current situation for the long term. Touch wood, no-one in our immediate circle has gone down with the virus and I am very aware that compared to large swathes of the population we are extremely lucky and really don't have anything to complain about. I know that and I totally accept that lockdown relaxations can't be cavalier, but that doesn't stop days like today where the frustrations overwhelm the rational. I don't think the men in white coats will be coming for me just yet and Mrs OH is very good at dispensing tough love to snap me out of it when I get all morose and gloomy, but it's easy to see that there is going to be a substantial mental health toll on the back of this.

Right, better prepare for my 11.30 Zoom.....
