Ashton wins Try of the Year award

The best try NZ scored this year was by Gear against Wales and Dagg against SA.

The Dagg try was nice because of the moment (right before the end) but Ashton's try was amazing. All the way from the backline, dodging Mitchell, going inside and still beating him

Just for woodward:

What a joke, didn't even deserve a nomination. There was at least one try in every All Blacks game this year that showed more to deserve the award than that. Pathetic.

Ahhh, you are back. We have all missed your stupid, one-eyed comments.

It's just one thing that bugs me a little. They should make several groups in which the Try of the Year is chosen and from those winners, they can pick the Try of the Year. Now I think they only look at test matches.

The try of the year is only for test matches..... Individual competitions such as the Magners, Aviva, Top 14 or Super 15 could all hold their own individual try of the year award, but it would be waaaay to much work to look through every rugby match played to decide the best try scored worldwide. Also where would it end, would Devision 3 West in Wales be included in the running?

Congrats to Ashton, super try worthy of the award. Great work by Youngs and Lawes in the build up, three young players really stamping their mark on a game.

Nothing impressive about the break just draw and pass, Mitchell was easy to beat because of the angle and speed he was running in cover. Any Super Rugby standard player would be expected to beat Mitchell in that situation. Showing a bit of pace doesn't deserve to win try of the year 2010. Despite the novelty value and feel good factor of England scoring a try from more than half a metre out it still doesn't compare favourably to say Carter's nomination against Wales which wasn't even his best try of that match.

Okay... Name 5 tries of New Zealand this year, I'll upload them on Youtube, post them here and we can all decide

the two nominated, Dagg and Carter, I could say Carters other try from that game although it may not have the distance some plebs believe to be important, Kahui from that game as well. For number 5, I dunno upload any of them it will probably involve more than an easy run in and a bit of grandstanding at the end.

Still a good try because of the speed he needed to score it, kind of agree there could have been other tries out there which required a lot more skill etc but who really carrrees. Happy they beat the Aussies!

Good Effort! It was a great try...

What's with all the NZer's saying that it was a crap try?!? If Gear had've scored a try like that we'd already be up to page 20 of this thread!

he beat one player...

So if a lock gets the ball 5 metres from the try-line and he runs with 15 opponents in a line and beats them, that is a better try than a guy than runs 90 metres and only beats one guy?

Why are people letting woodward wind them up? Just ignore it.

So it's not a Kiwi thing, it's just woodward? Phew... That's a relief ;)

Yes, he did only beat one player, this award annoys me because the award goes to the single player but it's not judged on the single player, If you were judging individual brilliance then this try by Israel Dagg would be the clear winner

Chris Ashton's try was really all thanks to Ben Youngs beating Cooper and getting the ball away

I think we all have our favourites. This Cheetahs try (finished off by van der Walt) is one of the best tries of the year for me.

It all comes down to personal preference.

I thought that it had to be International... And again that's a great TEAM try. Van der Walt didn't really do anything that amazing

That's why I said, finished off by van der Walt. It's difficult to just pick one try. Gio Aplon scored 2 tries against France in the summer. One of them was an amazing sidestep, the other was a 90 metre diagonal run all across the field. What is defined as a wonderful try? Do we enjoy seeing a player beat opponents with speed or moves? Do we prefer a great individual show or a team try?
