Ashton wins Try of the Year award

What makes the Ashton try better than these 2 from the same match by Beale? It's just what you prefer.

You'd think a South African (of all countries) would appreciate a forward with bit of underhanded cheating which was gotten away with! :p

That's NZ. SA forwards rarely get away with anything. Not that it stops them from trying.

I think we all have our favourites. This Cheetahs try (finished off by van der Walt) is one of the best tries of the year for me.

It all comes down to personal preference.

Great try. I also prefer team tries and my favourites are those across the field tries with the ball changing hands constantly; that Stormers one against the Chiefs.

Also, expect Habana to have a great year.

What a joke, didn't even deserve a nomination. There was at least one try in every All Blacks game this year that showed more to deserve the award than that. Pathetic.

Oh look who's back! We missed you!

Everybody say "Hi Woody!"

TRF's about to get amusing.

I give it about a week before woodie here starts calling for SBW to get player of the year and posts a photoshop of himself hoffing down Daggs' giblets.

he beat one player...

A guy can only play what in front of him ...but he completely blitzed any cover defence that was there...im sure if you had asked however he could have turned around and beat a few more defenders and than waltzed his way back to the tryline.

the two nominated, Dagg and Carter, I could say Carters other try from that game although it may not have the distance some plebs believe to be important, Kahui from that game as well. For number 5, I dunno upload any of them it will probably involve more than an easy run in and a bit of grandstanding at the end.

Sorry mate. You might be a fellow Kiwi, but IMO you are a long way off the mark.

Ashton had to do a lot more than just "run in and a bit of grandstanding". Get your black eye-patch off and take a good look at the video... he stood up Drew Mitchell from over 10m away, turned him inside out and then did him over for pace as well, and Mitchell is no slouch.

IMO, this try was thoroughly deserving of winning best try of the year, with Dagg's solo effort at the Cake Tin against the Bokke a close second.

That's why I said, finished off by van der Walt. It's difficult to just pick one try. Gio Aplon scored 2 tries against France in the summer. One of them was an amazing sidestep, the other was a 90 metre diagonal run all across the field. What is defined as a wonderful try? Do we enjoy seeing a player beat opponents with speed or moves? Do we prefer a great individual show or a team try?

I'd much rather see a great team try but then it seems a bit weird to give an award to one player...

In my opinion, I think individual tries are the best. Team tries can be great, but I like it when one person is tested to the limit and comes off on top. If I was to pick the best international tries, they would be ones like the one in my avatar or -

Tries where you think they should have been stopped 10 times, and yet they still managed to make it to the end, and I think Chris Ashton's fits that pretty well. There are one or two tries that I think were great this year, that weren't mentioned, like Hosea Gear's try for NZ Maori and Kahui's try against Wales, but Ashton needed real pace to score that try and good on him for finishing it off.

Horses for courses, both team & solo efforts have their place and both are judged upon their merits accordingly.

And also bear in mind that this try is also partially a team effort. The 'differently legal' turnover and then Lawes' hands to set Ashton free were great.
A good choice IMO, even if there were a few others that could have got it.

(Beware of the commas!)

Question:

If a prop were to make a tackle in the 80th minute (of the world cup final) on his own tryline, release the player, steal the ball, dodge the impending lock's swipe, run forward and step the scrum-half, pace the left-field opposition wing by running on his outside, cut infield, pop the ball up in front of him to make a double hand-off on the fullback and 12, then step the incoming 13 then proceeed to run forward and chip the ball over the right-wing whom has now occupied the fullback position and finally collect the ball after a 40 metre chase, to score under the sticks, so that his team wins the game 30-29

Would you (or woodward for that matter) vote that try of the year?

Once again, apologies for the commas

Only if it was a New Zealander who did it. If it was a NH player, woody would swear blind it never happened at all!

Agreed. Thoroughly deserved. That crowd roar when Ashton catches the pass was too epic. There is also a guy in the crowd who stands and waves him on. Yes, I have watched the try that many times. Although, I do think that Mitchell is a slow-poke. I seem to remember Ryan Kankowski out-running him last year in the Super14.

You mean this one?

Guys... Personal question... Is this offside or not?

Dude, are you Kanko? Or Burgess?

Can't say from a still; it depends on his position when the ball came away from the set piece.

Edit: just saw the clip and it looks fine; Kanko came up from deep quick and anticipated really well.

The commentator said he was offside. That's why I wasn't sure. To me it looks fine because he is still behind the ball

In that case they should use commentators the same way they do with referees with the Super 15 ;)

NZ commentators for SA-AU clashes and NZ-NZ clashes
AU commentators for NZ-SA clashes and AU-AU clashes
SA commentators for NZ-AU clashes and SA-SA clashes

Yup. That's the one. He has quite a bit of speed for a number 8.
