The rumours have been proven correct, Argentina will play an international match vs a South American international XV in August in what is to be a warm-up fixture for Rugby World Cup 2011. The venue for the match is yet to be confirmed but the date will be August 6. The match is to be a re-birth of the side known as the South America XV which played international matches against South Africa in the 1980´s when the country was government by apartheid. The team is to be called the CONSUR XV, and will be made up of 10 players from Argentina in conjunction with four from Chile and Uruguay and Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela also all being represented.

The team is to be coached by a trio representing South Amercia´s top three sides with Raúl Pérez of Argentina, Daniel Graco of Chile and Sebastián Piñeyrúa of Uruguay. Chile has already confirmed its three of its four players for the fixture with Germán Suazo (Stade Francais), Francisco Cabrera (Old Boys), Francisco Deformes (Old Macks) all selected. Francisco Deformes is in doubt through injury but expected to be fit in time for the match.

The South American XV was a successful venture. It was almost exclusively made up of Argentine players. The side defeated South Africa in a full international fixture in Bloemfontein in 1982. The 21-12 victory remains one of the biggest results in the history of South American rugby. It remains to be seen whether the CONSUR XV will be strong enough to provide Los Pumas with a good contest but the intention should be applauded.

Why do you say i will be Uruguay plus Sergio Valdés? It says it will be 10 ARGs, 4 URUs and 4 CHIs, plus some others. And I think Valdés is way too old...

Anyway, I also think it will be an easy win for Argentina (probably they won't field their strongest side, though). I see it more as a way of giving minutes to players that don't play usually play high-level rugby, including some non-argentineans, in a (very generous, I may add) initiative to develop rugby elsewhere in the continent.

Right, I didn't know he was still in France. I'm sure there would be more than him in a SA side though, perhaps 2 or 3 in the starting XV and 4 or 5 in the 22. I couldn't give names, but the difference is not as large as that (last game was won by Chile)

oh, didn't see that

but if there were no Argentines and purely a strongest South American side minus Argentina it would be dominated by Uruguay with a few Chileans

Sergio Valdés is the Chilean playing at the highest level in ProD2, he is the best Chile have

Chilean international centre, Francisco de la Fuente, will join him at Auch next season.

Pablo Huete plays in New Zealand for a club in Christchurch

Cristian Westenenk plays in Australia for the Manly Marlins

The captain should be Rodrigo Capo who, of course, plays for Castres.

That's all great news. And finding out a bit about Pablo Huete (who I had never heard of, he wasn't around when I left Chile), he was selected by Tasman to play the ITM cup in New Zealand. http://www.allteams.co.nz/entitypages/article/plaintextarticle.aspx?pid=6458&aid=44376

Sergio Valdés has signed for Pau for next season

With a bit of reserach, Francisco de la Fuente was playing for Auch this season though

S
outh America doesn't have too many professionals at the minute apart from the Argentines of course, without actaully having watched any of the South American teams play I take from this that the standard isn't good and should be a 60 point win for the Pumas (depending on what Argentine players the Xv gets)

don't actually know what the Argentine top tournament is, can you help here Melhor?

do many Brazilians/Uruguayans/Chileans play in it?

is it good standard?

Francisco de la Fuente was in the Auch academy but now he is in the actual squad on a fixed contract.

No Brazilians are on pro contracts but the Sevens captain, Fernando Portugal, was in Italy for two years in the second division. He is a semi-pro player in Brazil. He is set up with personal contracts worth lots of money but only he is. A really good player. He plays inside centre and age aside is worth a Pro d2 contract. Could easily play for Connacht, Aironi or Newcastle and get regaulr game time.

Argentine top tournament... depends on who you ask. Buenos Aires´s URBA Top 14 is the worlds best city compeition. 14,000 for the final. A good standard of rugby but its only the capital. The winner goes on to play in the Argentine Club Championship which was won by a Cordoba club last season. There is a Provincial Championship which is the national comp. Used to be dominated by Buenos Aires but not anymore.

Many of Los Pampas players are from elsewhere. Tucuman, Cordoba, Santa Fé, etc. 26 of the 30 players from RWC 2007 were from Buenos Aires. This time around much less. For instance Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga is from Rosario, Juan Figallo is from Salta. Martín Bustos Moyano is from Córdoba.

Brazilians play in Brazil. Some Uruguayans in URBA but very few. Lots of work to be done here I´m afraid!

Yeah, no pro competition in South America. It would be the best for SA rugby if there was a pro league in Argentina, where good uruguayans, chileans and brazilians could go play. But that seems very unlikely for the years to come.

This is going to be such a hiding... Anyway, good for the Pumas to get some game time.

I watched the game. It was great. A big crowd and lots of tries. Juan Imhoff scored 3 in the first half. Indeed the guy is a machine. If he does make the RWC squad then a big name player from Europe will miss out. Imhoff should be picked up by a European club soon.

Here is my match report (from my site): http://rugbyworldcup-argentina2023.blogspot.com/2011/08/argentina-78-15-south-america-xv.html

Scorelines can be misleading and today´s result certainly was as Argentina completed a 78-15 victory over the South American Invitation XV, known as the CONSUR XV this afternoon in San Juan, Argentina. Despite winning by a massive score, the match should indeed be considered a huge success. The continued growth of rugby in Argentina was clear with a big turn out to further underline the potential of Argentina as a host nation for Rugby World Cup 2023. Conditions were ideal with plenty of sun allowing for attacking rugby and both sides indeed played open rugby, using the width of the pitch throughout the match. Argentina´s superiority was clear as it always was going to be considering the huge difference in players with Los Pumas being packed with professional players playing for top teams in Europe and the remainder of the players being member of Los Pampas XV from this years Vodacom Cup in South Africa. The CONSUR XV was 100% amateur and a mixture of players from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. The team was able to gel well and indeed put together some positive attacks. Without question the fixtire should not be a one off and was far superior to Argentina facing simply Chile or Uruguay. It was a send off for Los Pumas and now the whole of South American rugby will certainly be getting behind Argentina at New Zealand 2011.

The game was the definition of an exhibition with Argentina fielding a total of 30 players, 8 more than what is allowed in international matches. At the close of the first half Argentina were well in charge as they led by 33-3 with the CONSUR XV not really looking so dangerous but they more than made up for this with organized defence which demonstrated the growth of the sport across the continent. At one point in the secondhalf the CONSUR XV managed to hold out Los Pumas for 25 minutes as no points were scored between the 5th and 30th minutes of play. the new generation of Pumas players stood tall with uncapped winger, Juan Imhoff scoring a firsthalf hattrick. His first try, in just the second minute of play, openned the scoring. Two minutes latter, Argentina´s right winger, Horacio Agulla scored Argentina´s second try, putting Argentina 12-0 ahead after four minutes. The CONSUR XV defended well for a long period thereafter, however, before Agulla and the Imhoff both scored again in the 30th and 31st minutes of play. When Benjamín Madero slotted a conversion for the CONSUR XV scores were 26-3 after 37 minutes but Imhoff hit back just before halftime with his third try after scrumhalf Nicolás Vergallo took a quick penalty.

Argentina made countless substitutions to start the secondhalf with a vastly different XV. Amonst the changes were both wingers with Rafael Carballo and Lucas Borges bothing entering the field. Carballo turned out to be a mirror image of Imhoff as he scored a secondhalf hattirck. His first try coming in the 44th minute. Nine minutes latter replacement scrumhalf, Alfredo Lalanne went over for a try which was converted by replacement flyhalf, Nicolás Sánchez. With Sánchez on the field, Contepomi went to inside centre. Three minutes after Lalanne´s try repalcement fullback, Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga scored a brilliant solo try for Argentina as he fooled the defence. Carballo scored his second try in the 62nd minute and Lucas Borges went over one minute latter to put Argentina ahead 64-3. The CONSUR XV did not really look like scoring before replacement flyhalf, Lucas Rodríguez Duque, (Tank) scored from a chip and chase in the 73rd minute. Carballo completed his hattrick two minutes latter before Duque made history by scoring his second try, though another kick through the defence. Colombian international flyhalf, José Manuel Diosa Gómez, added the extras to make it 71-15 with three minutes left on the clock. It was to be Argentina scoring the final points, however, as replacement winger, Agustín Gosio, scored a try in the 79th minute which Sánchez converted to make it 78-15.

Pumas made too many mistakes. I only saw the first half but the difference was enormous. The Pumas even playing very badly, were dominating too easily.

In particular, Consur XV turned too many rucks over. Argentina need to improve support at the breakdown and really do something about their handling.
