ACT Brumbies v British and Irish Lions (18/06/13)

Really disappointed, pack looked like they didn't give a **** and Barrit and 36 looked way out of their dept.

Front 5 were a disgrace, everyone banged on why Best wasnt selected in the original squad and why Grant wasnt brought in ahead of Corbs well I think that game proved why. Nothing the back line could do when the ball from the forwards was so poor, really felt for Hogg playing out of position under tremendous pressure, Gatlands policy of 2 10s has proven a poor one.

Also Tirpiric, yes he may be this great footballing 7 who everyone loves but under the cosh he was anonymous, Warburton everytime for me.

I refuse to give a rating of ok to any flanker whose team concedes so many turnover penalties. Again, might have picked up after I turned off, but the breakdown work was inexcusable for all I smell poor coaching all over it.

That said, Best was clearly the worst player on the pitch while I was watching, no point dressing that up. The lineout work in general was poor, but his own personal disintegration was just that. No impact carrying either.

Bit unfair to judge Barrit and 36. Most of the ball they got was behind the gainline, on the back foot with a defender on them. I'm hesitant to criticise any of the backline for their overall performance. The problems lay firmly with the forwards today.

Quinnell seems to completely underrate Heaslip work. Thinking Lydiate would need to be in to balance the bakrow if he plays.

Idle point - not intended to defend Best - but I wonder what the wind was like down there... neither side achieving over 70pc with goalkicking or lineout percentages is pretty abnormal.

Anyone could see that ions backline is a huge fail even before the game started

Not that I saw. I saw an unexpected change of direction and whatshisface walk through Kearney's inside shoulder like it wasn't there, largely because it wasn't there. Maybe he picked up a lot after I stopped watching in complete disgust, but what I saw did not impress me.

Something else to add to things - three tens has to be a minimum going forwards. Hogg never looked comfy. Dan Carter would have probably had a bad day with the utter shambles up front as well, but in terms of isolated skills Hogg just wasn't there.

My level of belief in Graham Rowntree as a coach is slowly dropping.

Looking back on it again Wade has to take the most blame for that try, he misses his first tackle then tries to take the big man high and gets bounced off colliding with Kearney. Awful defence from Wade, not great bey Kearney but there was only so much he could do with Wade hanging off his man and then getting thrown into him.

Don't forget Hogg coming in on Wade's man and leaving the try scorer absolutely free.

The first try was mainly Hogg's fault, he went in, so Wade had to tackle a man twice his size from behind/the side. Then again Hogg shouldn't have been in the defensive line because he is a FB.
I could see what Kearney was trying to do, but it didn't work. He thought Wade had him held and was going to drag/hit him into touch, but he didn't so Kearney ended up overrunning it.
I would have been safer had he not sprinted in, if he held back a metre or so Wade could have completed his tackle as Kuridrani would not have changed direction.

The backs all looked incredibly nervous before the game.

The loss can be put down to a failure of management and the Brumbies' tactics IMO.

There should have been a recognised 10 starting (touring!).
The issues the lions were having were obvious by about the 30 minute mark.
Either you are resting your players for the tests, in which case they do not come on unless there is an injury, or you bring them on as soon as you can.
Why wait for 25 minutes after the problems have arisen to bring on the solution?

The came could have been won had the subs been brought on before 50 mins.

Agreed, had Biggar or Madigan been called up instead of Barrit then Hogg could have moved to 13 where he is far more comfortable and the backline would have ran smoother.

Hook should have toured and he would be more than capable of covering the whole backline .
Quick question is the amount of players touring the norm or has gats taken fewer ?

Also wanted to add, i think at least 3 Lions mauls were pulled down blatantly and nothing was done...

I've watched pretty much every Aussie super rugby game this season, and still think that the maul could be our most potent weapon in the tests, they simply aren't accustomed to them.
Their scarcity on the tour thus far suggests that they are being saved for the tests.

i also noticed the brumbies were over the top of the ruck on their knees at first sealing the ball which allowed their open side (don't know his name but he played top drawer today) to turn us over easily. Quite disappointed how few rucks were hit by our tight 5 today :/

Pretty much same as last time.
