A few suprising cases of omissions from international teams has led me to question the loyalty of selectors and coaches to the players, not the players to the country. I understant the role of a selector is a tough role, but in these cases (especially the last two) are definately wrong. Here is my take on the forgotten players, who not so long ago were heroes.
I have supported Scottish rugby for many years and I beleive this Rugby World Cup squad is capable of taking on England and Argintina. However I do not feel this squad is as strong as it should be. I have been dissapointed to hear that the great Jason White hasn't even been considered for the pre world cup squad, what is so sad about this is that he was Scottish captain. True he has his faults but he if a very versitile back row player. The same can be said of Steve Borthwick, another old forgotten captain.
There was two pieces of news this week which dissapointed and angered me. The decision to omit Giteau from the Australian squad is unforgivable. He isn't old, he is a very versitile player and perhaps most importantly he has 91 caps- experiance is needed in world cups. To omit someone from the squad for "personal reasons" which this is probably about isn't alright. The wallabies will miss him and I am beginning to wonder that the last time I will have seen him play would be when Australia played Scotland and lost in 2009.
The second unforgivable omision of the week was Warren Gatland's decision to omit Martyn Williams from his his squad. This is even worse that Giteau because Williams isn't going to play rugby for his country again. I beleive they should have taken him for cover for Sam Warburton. However the saddest thing about this fiasco is the fact that he is stranded on 99 caps. When you do so much for your country, they should pay you back. He has done so much for his team but in the end they repay him nothing.
All of these players have shown unquestionable loyalty to their nation even the lowest capped player in that list has an enviable 57 caps (Borthwick). Here are the players who deserved more, who were in the spotlight, who were bastions of their country. But this proves, in the end when you have played your heart out and done all you can- you can still never receive the recognition you deserve. Here's to the forgotten greats and to the players who soon will be.

Steve Borthwick is a poor player, and if he had been included in the England squad it would have been laughable

Loyalty is all well and good, but you have to earn your place in the squad.
I would've thought Martyn Williams would have done enough to do so, as he's on good form and put in a good showing against Argentina, but to compare him missing out to Steve Borthwick is just daft!

White and Borthwick wouldn't have got near there respective teams. Borthwick is crap.

I agree with the fact that Borthwick isn't very good and I wasn't saying that Borthwick should be in the squad. But that how easily you can be forgotten even though you captained your country.

There's a reason he was forgotten though - he was dreadful

He spent more time in the sin-bin than on the pitch. On an unrelated note, I met him once, wish I hadn't arrogant and a person that you feel is listening to you speak but not to what you say.

The real issue here is are we dealing with professional organizations? Are the national teams set and run like businesses, with professional employees.

I would argue they are. Gone are the days when a player missed work and other commitments to plkay for his country. This is now a full time job. They are paid for their services. As a business the Nation must pick the best players (employees) for the job.

Being upset about an omission b/c you think the player is good enough is one thing.

Being upset about an omission b/c you think the player (employee) is owed it......is different.

Yes, the harsh reality is that sentiment and hanging on to players for too long, won't win you world cups ... you're are right that in a professional environment, players don't have a right to expect to be included just because of loyalty, but I do believe that they are owed some feedback on what areas they need to work on to get selected the next time

Not that I don't agree with some of your points, in particular Giteau (though I can't really speak on the NH because I see few games), based off of that theory we should be selecting passed it players because they were stalwarts for their country? It's a nice sentiment, but sometimes players just have to accept they no longer warrant instant, or any, selection into the team, especially if there are more worthy players out there. On top of that, specialist back-ups are far less likely to be selected nowadays. It sucks, but that too is another reason why some players are missing out.
