You have join at the back, and the ball has to be passed to the back so that you become the carrier. You can't join in front of the carrier, as it's then obstruction.

You can't add non-lineout players to the maul until the lineout is "over" (i.e. the maul has passed the mark of the lineout/the line where it was thrown in)
