2021 British & Irish Lions Squad

9 is a definite position of concern atm,
Murray was terrible today, Gareth Davies not much better

Price front runner, but I dunno, I rate him but he doesn't really inspire confidence

I was hoping the captaincy would galvanise Murray and see him playing his best...
Still time to go, I guess, but definitely a worry

Both of them were bloody awful today.

Price hasn't done anything wrong, but hasn't shone either.

Price could start or at least bench in the tests

I wonder at what point they'll actually say enough is enough. Surely the financial rewards are not worth all this...
What's the worst that realistically happens? They cancel a few matches, have a limited squad and potentially delay a test or two. That much disruption is definitely worth the finances (not to mention avoiding the mess of cancelling with sponsors wanting pro rata money back etc...)

A player/staff member gets seriously ill and dies of COVID?

True, but if the idea of going ahead was to try and salvage something financial, then it feels like all the issues may negate a lot of that in the end.

Unlikely if they are double vaxed
Not all of them are, it was confirmed by someone in the Lions organising management that most, but not all double vaccinated. I'm curious though as to how good that vaccination is, because if scientists are right that you should leave at least 8 weeks between jabs, then even if players got their jab early in May then it would only have been around now that they should have got their second. Even then it should take 2 weeks after the second dose to build up full immunity.

On that note if players were able to skip the queue because of this tour (which is highly likely considering the age of some) I'd actually be very annoyed as it's been made clear in this country that in no way are professions to be considered for priority and yet we have rugby players getting vaccines over those who need it just for a tour.

The guy has just been part of the team that won the premiership. Has loads of potential and like others point out, probably has more of a spark than other options. We already have the reliable 10's in the squad. People will moan about anything.

Ireland's Kelleher in line to join Gatland's Lions squad in South Africa https://the42.ie/5491533

Kinsella saying no one's injured they just want a fourth hooker. He would have flown out after his weeks in camp but the Irish and Lions management agreed he'd be best off starting two tests first.

I would have thought LH would be higher priority than hooker. If Sutherland or Wyn Jones get injured then we're screwed.

Andy Farrell: 'I don't know what more Johnny Sexton could have done' https://the42.ie/5492576

So according to Farrell, Sexton is fully fit and has been part of the Irish bubble.

A rare golden nugget in the 42 comments.

Gatland has totally ****** what the Lions is about in a number of his selections since 2013. Everyone talks about the best players from four nations joining together to play but it's become selections to stroke Gatland's ego. Shane Williams in 2013, the cohort of Welsh club level players in 2017 and, one of a number of things this year but ultimately a world player of the year in this Lions cycle behind a kid who hasn't played a tier 1 international is pathetic. The worst thing being he'll probably win because SA won't be able to field a proper team due to covid. Its incredible that the biggest farce of this tour remains as Gatland.

Gatland's been incredibly lucky in his run as coach, a poor Australia team, an NZ team with a whole bunch of legends just retired and a SA team riddled with COVID.

I was really disappointed in the Lions board for giving him this gig and hope it's his last. He's an ultra conservative coach who picks his favourites and players who have delivered for him in the past over those who should be picked on merit based on the here and now. I enjoyed the 2009 tour with Geechs in charge way more than the last three. Geechs always picked on merit rather than past history.
