2021 British & Irish Lions Squad

Marcus Smith called up and flying to SA tomorrow subject to PCR test. Russell out for a couple of weeks with an achilles issue but not tour ending apparently.

I think even he is ahead of Sexton in the Lions pecking order.

It is mad. Smith is a talented player but he's currently putting in an ok performance against Canada.

There's been a lot of talk about Gatland picking guys who've credit in the bank. I'm pretty sure Sexton is the only 10 he has won a Lions test match with and has an excellent record against SA across his career. There are some valid injury concerns but surely at this stage the veteran who can pick up the system quickly is the pick.

Winning the Prem, to being a starter your first two England caps, to being called up to the Lions - things escalating very quickly for Smith, haha

I've always thought Sexton has been overrated for the last few years so I'm happy at this. Although, I would have expected Ford before Smith

I think if it was Biggar or Farrell injured then Sexton would've gotten the call. IMO Russell's only seen by Gatland as a bit of a live wire wildcard he can pull out if things go really wrong; he's not currently seen as a legitimate 10 option. In that sense Smith is the logical replacement.

Maybe Sexton was asked and he said no out of petulance at not being picked from the start
To be fair I reckon this is it, not petulance but rather giving himself rest for future and more important endeavours.

He should have been in the initial squad so why go to a covid ridden country after being undervalued by a coach you carried through two tours.

Give me a lions team for the first test of
8. Simmonds
9. Murray
10. Smith
11. DVDM
12. Farrell
13. Daly
14. LRZ
15. Hogg
