2014 Six Nations: Ireland vs Scotland (Round 1)

Don't be on the wrong side to begin with. I know that's harsh, but if the effect of the action makes for a penalty offence, then does it matter if it was intentional or not?

I reckon if the player is clearly attempting to get out of the way but the ball still can't come back it should be a scrum not a full arm penalty. But if the player is just lying there making no effort then sure award the penalty.

edit. Re Toner I think common sense should come into play and a scrum should be given to Scotland. The ref even acknowledged how difficult it is to get out of that situation but he is bound by the rules.

Trimble gets 1 touch and a try. But well going ok still a battle and well game is as expected a physical war.

Was always going to be a real dogfight, touch of class form sexton was nice.

Heaslip def. in touch. But what a fkn break by Sexton, he broke about 27 tackles there, minimum. I'm pretty sure I even saw Scottish fans in there trying to block his way.

Ireland look dangerous at the breakdown, even with big O'Brien out. It's a fairly new thing, and their mauls have looked pretty darn good as of late too. I remember last year that's how they scored against us.
Scotland looking more accomplished on attack though, and no. 8 Denton, what a fkn carry there, just out into touch but he was about to score over 4 Irishmen !

Scotland needs a better scrum though if they are to really compete against Tier 1 opposition. Unlike the Wallabies, they don't have silky gorgeous magnificent attacking to compensate.

No it's not. One of the common phrases trotted out about any Irish team is how good they are at the breakdown.

not this good. They've been clinical there and seem to contest every single defensive ruck ball thinking they're getting it back. I haven't seen Ireland play that tough in recent memory as the way they have against the AB's in November or today against Scotland. The only thing is they ought to manage their stamina because against the All-Blacks they ran out of energy in the waning moments and it didn't end well. I'm sure they'll be this way the whole tournament, but it should be interesting to see their form come last 20min of the game in the 2nd H, esp. against a weighty, frantic England for e.g.

Scotland's set piece is a mess.
Do they really have no one better than Ford? He can't throw and can't hook.

POM went straight off his feet for that turnover - not even slightly, he literally dove flat onto the ruck and lay on the ball then the referee blew for holding on.

Stuart Hogg is definitely the shining light for Scotland.

Sexton is looking really good for Ireland. And impressed with the work rate of Connor Murray too.

Jim Hamilton to the ref, after being told off for always being involved in the handbags, "I'm just sticking up for myself, sir"

If you've broken Chris Henry I'll kill you.

POM, from ridiculous to sublime in a moment - first bounced by Hogg, then a great piece of work at the breakdown at a critical moment.

PO'M didn't support his bodyweight when he went in for the jackle there when he won the penalty. Seemingly does it quite often and gets away with it. Not his problem until a referee picks it up.

Referee told Best to roll away, he rolled directly towards the ruck into Laidlaw, knocking his legs out from underneath of him, yet the referee played on.....what?!
