2014 Six Nations: Ireland vs Scotland (Round 1)

About the packs, I remember Scotland being on par with Ireland's scrum. In fact, there's a 7-man scrum at a point for Scotland and they were pushing Ireland back in last year's fixture, pretty bizarre to watch...the scrum, it doesn't seem, will be a problem for Scotland in this one. Given that it's been their vice recently (pen. try against Italy and SA in last year's Quadrangular), that's one thing they don't have to worry about too greatly in Aviva. Well I mean things would appear that way, who knows with scrums..

Martin Moore gonna **** **** up.

Hope he does but he did have bother last weekend. I really look at our probable pack against theirs and well it's light. Toner and POC as a unit will be under pressure at scrums I'd expect that's there target is keeping the game tight

If that was bother than I'm quite happy with bother. The scrum was steady while he was on, wasn't as good as I'd have hoped but still good enough. Also making 11 tackles in 50 minutes as a tighthead won't help your scrummagging.

I never said he was poor BG8 or was sole person responsible but he along with Kilcoyne and Herring all had bother in scrum which in my eyes only really improved when replacements came on. And that is just honest fact. We weren't destroyed but were average at best regards his tackles etc I never questioned his work rate

I thought there was nothing really in the scrums until McGrath went against Wilson.

I've no idea how you got that from my post.

I didn't say you said he was poor. I used your word bother. Bother to me is being put under pressure and mostly given up some yards. For the huge majority of the time he was on the scrum was steady and secure, which is not bother. As far as I can remember there was one scrum penalty while he was on and that was against Kilcoyne. He didn't get the upperhand as hoped but he wasn't under pressure. Yeah replacements did better but remember they were against English replacements as well who English fans were quite worried about. I also never said you questioned his workrate, I simply put it forth as a factor that could take away from his scrummagging.

EDIT: Fitz potentially out with groin strain. ****. If so Marshall needs to start for extra linebreaking threat.

Well another spin is under "bother" in an A game will need a major step up to be tearing it up against Scots. Whatever about Ford the 2 props are fine players and well there is no easy game in terms of scrummaging especially from a pack like ours that has lost bit of class in Sean O'Brien and we were destroyed by Aussies in that area.

@Peat I thought McGrath Strauss and Archer all outshone the men they replaced but as BG8 said they were against poorer opposition and tired legs

Follow him on Facebook or the score.ie. Always does excellent analysis articles.

Yeah, I see a few of them, also pick him up on the Rugby site at times, not always right and a little prone to using selective examples to make a point - aren't we all, in fairness comprehensive evidence is simply too weighty for this sort of blog posts - but always good reads. **** knows how he's out there blogging while Thornley/Ward/The Western Mail/Jones/Guscott are making a living out of rubbish.

Scotland team looks ok... Not amazing. Don't know why Evans is there. We know what he can do and it is nothing amazing. Though they would have tried some new blood for the 23 shirt.

I agree with Scott and that if you are on the bench then you might as well play. But maybe Johnson wants to give back to a few young centers that have really put their hand up for selection.

Fitzgerald allegedly out injured. Trimble and Kearney expected to start with McFadden on the bench. TOD on the bench. Couple of other surprises, can't be arsed typing it all out right now, it must be elsewhere on the internet...

Ireland rumoured team.
Kearney, Trimble BOD Marshall Kearney Sexton Murray Heaslip Henry POM POC Toner Ross Best Healy
Subs Cronin McGrath Moore Tuohy TOD Boss Jackson McFadden

Luke Fitz Mike Mc unavailable due to injury.

Fitz would be a big blow but I think I'd rather have him at 100% against wales or england than risk anything. Not like Trimble and Dave are going to let us down.

If that is the team I'd be pretty happy. The only change I would make is Toner for Henderson (who I'd be shocked if he didn't get a spot on the bench). Despite a decent game against NZ Toner has yet to convince me that he is an international player and certainly doesn't bring the same physicality that Touhy or Henderson does.

Henderson was awesome against the Saxons, and has put in some great performances this season.

How far off is he being included in the senior team?
