Really strange call, King Tommy is the better player by quite a bit at the moment.

As I kind of lluded to yesterday I'd say it's not because of who's the better player but who's more suited to the gameplan, a combo of Henderson and Murphy brings real impact. Of course O'Donnell is a good carrier but not as good as Murphy and hasn't carried too well recently. Then of course there is also the whole building a squad thing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see TO'D start vs Italy.

Have to say I expected TOD to bring more omuf off the bench than he has, might be Joe's reasoning. Not that TOD been bad hasn't had a lot of time to impose his game.

Exactly, Murphy really hasn't done anything deserving of an Ireland cap. That said hopefully he helps the team win if needed!

Ruddock probably is more deserving but he's a poor enough bench option given he only covers 6 which Henderson covers anyway.

Edit: it's pretty funny that a while ago I was the saying how overrated Murphy was and am now putting forth reasons for his selection, if any coach other than Schmidt...

I reckon it's versitility. English game is going to be physical as ****. Murphy can cover the whole back row. O'Donnell cannot.

At least Schmidty is sticking to his word. He's using much more of the extended squad than we've become accustomed to.

Crazy thing about our bench is if every province had fully fit teams. None of them players with exception of Jackson would be starters maybe Cronin. So you could say all are experienced from bench

Hes pretty useful for this time of year and we were never really going to get another player like Necewa.

Meh, he's been good in the Pro 12 and is a good 23 for the Heineken. With Fitzgerald most likely moving to 13 next year we'd have been awfully low on back three players had we got a centre.

Anyway... After seeing the teams my prediction is Ireland by 3. I think having the halfbacks who can better control a game will be the difference in the end. The teams are so evenly matched and both are almost perfectly suited to playing each other. A dull game for the neutral I suspect.
