[2014 EOYT] Wales

It seems that pretty much no team these days have a specialised attack coach. They just call them attack skills coach or even just skills coach.
I really don't think theres too much of a difference.

Who else would be shaping the attack with the Wales team?

Gatland? nope he's always used other coaches to take care of that like McGeechan with Wasps etc...

To be honest its just a name, and some people really get to technical with them. A lot of the coaching team will overlap.
At the international level as well they won't really do a lot of coaching, just going through patterns, pressure etc...

So yeah Howley is in charge of attack basically.

I just explained what the difference is, one delivers the overall attack pattern and process the other the skills required to deliver parts/elements of it.

Of course there is a fair amount of overlap but they are very different roles.

It's like saying a scrum or ruck coach is the forwards coach.

Hardly.

Very few teams will have both. Especially at international level where there frankly isn't enough time or need for the most part.

If they do, most likely the skills coach will be an assistant assistant coach. In the case of England, Lancaster and Farrell probably take care of the shape while catt does "skills" and kicking with Catt having input obviously.

Unless you have real insight i don't think you can really claim to know what each individual actually does in their role. Again we are just informed by labels and what little we are tools in the media.

With Wales Howled takes care of "skills", shape.

If one is an attack coach he will most likely cover "skills" as well and vice versa.

Depends on the make up of the coaching teach.

These individual roles are nothing more than labela in the grand scheme.

How is that any different to what i've just said?

Does talking to someone within the actual RFU coaching set up about it count, or is that not insightful enough for you?

Well Howley is labeled as a skill coach when in reality he is attack, skills and backs coach.

I know someone in the WRU set up as well honestly...

the question was about the difference, not who does both, as i said there will be some cross cut, but they aren't the same nor mutually exclusive of each other, certainly not in the RFU set up - which was the question by Tony. :)

Cool, i'm pleased for you.

BTW, I never said i knew them i said i talked to them? One was my level 2 instructor who co-ordinated coaching and tutored the current England coaching team (but has now left that area of the RFU) and the other was my old club captain who now works for the RFU in player development. You'll be surprised how close knit the coaching community is within the RFU and how much they all talk.
