2014 Canadian Rugby Championship and General Canadian Rugby Chat.

Well, the Wolf Pack got their first Manitoba based player only this year. I know they have had a few Sask boys over the years. Will try to get more info about clubs in Sask. in a day or two, my feeling is that this site mentioned above is WAY out of date.

Yeah just one in Lloydminster and one in Moose Jaw otherwise. Thought there might be a few more than that actually but I guess it makes sense with SK's population.

Did Yukon have a team in Whitehorse LOL?

I believe their used to be one but it was within the armed forces, otherwise no.

I have a feeling it might not be, haha. This province is, however growing in population with a very high rate so I would not be surprised if there was a growing rugby community at all in the next 5 years.

I thank you greatly. With how long I scoured the SRU website I can't believe I didn't find them haha. I might be getting a spot on my clubs council and if so I want to convince them to try and set up a small preseason tour of Saskabush or the Okanagan.

South East Thistles play out of AD Penner Park, Google says that's in Blumenort, which the internet tells me is just a hop and a skip away(50ish minutes) from Winnipeg. It does appear the other non Brandon teams are indeed situated in Winnipeg. Which due to 2/3ish of Manitoba living in Winnipeg doesn't surprise me.

I would love to have Rugby Alberta(ERU/CRU), the SRU and Ruby Manitoba work together to have the a 4 team tournament/round robin each year. Something like St Albert(ERU), Calgary Hornets(CRU), Saskatoon Wild Oats(SRU) and Assassins RFC(MRU) facing off and the winner brings some sort of trophy back to their union. Or maybe the return of competition between Edmonton Gold, Calgary Mavericks, Saskatchewan Prairie Fire and a Manitoba rep team. I do think Rugby Canada should be promoting inter provincial games though money(or lack thereof) is a big factor in these decisions. Promote the games as something big and play off the city and provincial rivalries to try and boost interest in the sport. I'd prefer a BC/Alberta competition but the different seasons makes it incredibly unlikely.

Wolf Pack wider training squad announced:

Wolf Pack Extended Training Squad:
Forwards:
Peter Houlihan, Casey Reed, James Smith, Evan Olmstead, Spencer Massiah, Clayton Panga, Kyle Gilmour(c), Jeremy Kyne, Ryan Ackerman, Ryan Kotlewski, Matt Harrison, Ian Houston, John Moloney, Nanyak Dala, Spencer Watkins

Backs:
Gordon McRorie, Steven Arnold, Graham Turner, Dustin MacPherson, Nick Blevins, Adam, Bontus, Shea O'Hallan, James Buchanan, Adam McQueen, Brandon Harrison, Reid Watkins, Jake Robinson, Ian Shoults, Brandon Waeyen

Interesting to see Jeremy Kyne back in the swing of things this season, I was under the impression he had retired after the 2011 RWC and was mainly just coaching and assisting the Wolf Pack. Good on him for coming back.

Jeremy Kyne plays for the first division Strathcona Druids team in the Alberta Cup and has looked good this season whenever I've seen him play.

As for Dala, he adds some good depth behind Panga and Gilmour at Flanker. I know he's coming off some injuries but I really hope to see him get some playing time Thursday.

The Wolf Pack site also says Ontario may bring in Mike Scholz, Jamie MacKenzie and Jake Webster if they are available. Man if they had those additions and a healthy Liam Underwood that would be some scary stuff. Even without reinforcements the forwards and backs of the Blues will definitely push the Wolf Pack to the limit. I definitely hope Thursdays game is a more competitive game than the Pack/Bears games were.

I am heading up today, have family up there, plan to watch the game on Thursday, Go Pack!

Sportsnet World just got back to me and they confirmed what I had thought, they no longer have broadcast rights to any of the three major domestic competitions, Aviva(this I know is with BeiNTV) or Top 14 or Pro 12. I have no idea who holds the rights to the latter two or whether Sportsnet World just couldn't be bothered getting them. Very dissapointing, It makes my sub to that channel totally reduntant in the winter so I may as well cancel sometime in October and hope they bring back their Southern Hemisphere stuff later.

Now to figure out who holds the rights to Top 14 and Pro 12. If it's BeinTV than they aren't bothering to air them in Canada because I can't see them on their schedule like I can the Aviva stuff.

Trying to find out if there will be a live stream.

Huge game, don't want to call it the ***le decider already with so much to play but it will be massively important for the two sides. Blues might be in tougher vs. the Bears on the weekend as well, BC have called in reinforcements and short rest travel will be diffficult.

I was thinking the same thing. Pack play the Rock in Calgary on Sunday though. The Rock should be a good challenge as well.

This should be a rough weekend for all but I think The Rock has it a bit tougher than the rest. They have to fly out of Newfoundland to play in Vancouver for tomorrow's game then fly to Calgary to play against the Wolf Pack. At least for them they'll have gotten their three road trip games out of the way early.

Jake Illnicki just signed with New South Wales Country in the ANRC. Good news to get a first Canadian in that comp quite quickly and for Illnicki to get a start at a pro gig.

apparently a live stream for this match is going to be a last minute thing.

Also, great news about Ilnicki, we needed him to be a pro, he is a serious prospect for us at 3.
