How does Samoa drop two places ?

Eliota was right about the IRB.

Really, ... does it really matter? ... it's just a formula to give an indication of how well teams are going ... it's not like the rankings are used for entry into any tournaments or anything.

if Samoa beats a team that's above them in the rankings, such as South Africa, then their ranking will increase dramatically

if i'm not mistaken its based on results over the last two years to avoid upsets making teams jump around, just tie together a few more wins and that will start to makke a difference.

Whilst not being responsible for tournament entry, remember the rankings are used for the seedings of the tournament.

Does anyone know if teams still get double points for wins in the RWC (and conversely surrender double the usual amount)? That might explain Samoa dropping more than you might have expected them to after the loss to Wales, OP.

Thanks, the Irish, for restoring our (SA) 2nd spot to us and congrats on a return to a more fair position for you guys.

Actually, he's a fool.

The comparison of an unfair sporting timetables to "slavery, the holocaust and apartheid", is so pathetic. Hope he gets banned just for being a twit.

I totally feel that there are ways that the tier two nations could get better time tables by having two games on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, but at the end of the day, it's TV ratings at World Cups that pays for multimillion dollar rugby facilities and high performance centres to be built in Samoa. It's not ideal and it's pretty unfair, but it's not like he wouldn't have known about this 9 months out from the Rugby World Cup. The whole saint act doesn't really work.
"You can't get punished for speaking out against injustice. That would be unjust. Anyone can tackle a man. Try tackling injustice."

What a tool.

Yes it is unfair, but what an absolute moron.

and Canada & Italy jump us, dont think so. Crapola.

It's not done at random. There's no bias in the rankings. Samoa lost against Wales who are higher and won against Namibia who are ranked 20 so it doesn't help their case. Canada bet Tonga who were higher and lost against France who were fifth so it doesn't hurt their place. You'll find if they beat Fiji and/or South Africa they will move up in the rankings. These rankings don't mean much considering it'll be four years before it makes any difference in the pool seedings.

It's a system of taking away/ losing points based on your current points and position with other variables being the margin (a win by 15 or more increases the points transfered) and the location (a home loss means you lose more points than you would have in an away match). You could argue the merits of the exact amount of points and the fact that it gets doubled in the WC tournament which does skew it somewhat but the fact remains that it's a fair system in that it rewards/penalises all teams equally depending on their performances as any system designed to represent form/strength of any given team at a particular point in time SHOULD do.

Why is the man so mad at the rankings ?

Samoa lost to someone ranked higher than them and beat someone ranked -much- lower, whereas Canada beat someone ranked a few spots higher than them, of course Canada is gonna climb the rankings :/
It's a pretty rational system, and not very hard to understand.

Yes ... it's EXACTLY the same scoring system that had Samoa placed two places higher last week ... was it an unjust ranking system then?

Samoa are easily better than Canada ... remember Canada lost to Georgia by 7 points in November

the rankings are generally reasonably accurate apart from the Pacific nations because it doesn't take into account that they don't have their strongest team for most matches other than the World Cup

so because Tonga did well in the PN Cup this year, they get higher points than they should have, as all the Pacific sides were weakened and being rotated

and because Tonga had over rated points, Canada beating them got them more points than they perhaps should have got for beating Tonga

got me?

The rankings do try to take into account the best players play at the world cup (and not always at other times), by awarding double the points for a win, than what the winning team would get if it was just a normal test match.

... I reiterate that, in the grand scheme of things, the rankings are just a guide to a team's consistence, and have no bearing on one team's ability to beat another on any given day ... Ireland V Australia is a good example of this.

Well...that's not true though, is it?

Of course it's true. Have they won a World cup? Have they ever been in a final or even a semi?? Nope.. so at the moment they are crap. They're a poor mans All Blacks.

You can quibble all you want but ultimately the system is pretty fair. You are simply noting the consequences of fielding a weaker side. While rankings may fluctuate they will tend to be accurate over time. Don't forget you need to look at points as well in addition to overall ranking to get an idea of team strength.
