Why not more drop kicks?

I'd like to see the drop goal reduced to 2 points so they don't have as large an influence on the whole game. Scoring a try should be the pinnacle every time. An uncoverted try should be worth more than two drop goals.

Sometimes penalties are given very cheaply and even in error. I don't think they should be worth more than drop goals.

DROP GOALS IS A GREAT THING IN RUGBY BECAUSE IT CAN CHANGE THE GAME IN A HARTBEAT

Anyone remember De Beer at the 99 RWC? A great example of drop goal ability. A few people thought after that drop goals might be too easy for the points, but i haven't seen any more matches like it (which we would have if droppies were overvalued)

Well why go for 3 points instead of 7, unless theres like a few minutes left and you only need 3 points to win. Like Italy

i've always thought that the teams should focus more on drop gaols. they may score less, but they are generally easier. and, as already said, they can have a huge impact on a game. world cup final, '95, for example

Would the all blacks have done better keeping the pressure on than with Merhten's missing the drop prior to Stransky's effort? Not neccessarily a great example of why teams should go for more drops, but a good example of the potential impact.

Spectators want to see more tries than drop goals.. Drop goals should be reducted to 1 point and penalties should be reduced to 2. We see in rugby league drop goals are usually only used when its tied score and they get the drop goal to win by a point, on when theyre up by 6 points and get the drop goal so the opposition team need more than a try to win it. Penalties wont be taken as much with just two points on offer and at the end we will see more even scores and closer games, while we would see more games where the winner scores more tries than the other team, unlike games like the super 14 final where the losers outscored the winners 2-1.

YES I TOTAL AGREE!
[/b]

But often a team that takes the drop goal and changes the game in a heartbeat is a team that don't have the ability to break the opposition's defensive line ... is that the team who should get the points?

Like New Zealand against France then?

if we reduced the points from penalties, teams would kill the ball more and give away more penalties to avoid tries. 3 points for a drop goal isn't broke. So don't fix it.

Make drop goals two points unless the team is playing advantage change it to 3. [/b]

Why? Scoring drop goals isn't that common a tactic (that's the original point of the thread). So why depower it?

So Leicester can't get to the Guinness Premiership Final by 1 point. :bleh!:

They still would have, as gloucester's drop would also have scored less.

I love drop kicks, but it does seem silly for them to be worth more than half of a try. Reduce it to 2 points.
