Why do players tie their shoestrings under the shoe?

Just wondering why players tie their shoe strings after running them down around the sole? I dont see this in any other turf games.

You'll notice the next time you watch a game that forwards do that more, way more, than backs. Forwards use that tying method to give a tighter feel of the boot on the foot, especially around the arch, as forwards' boots take alot more tension.

I've noticed one of the New Zealand props has tape all over his boots, think it was Neemia Tialata - anyone know why he does this?

umm he couldn't afford flash new white boots, so he just taped them up with white tape :p

I use to have a pair of cleats with long laces.. and I tied it around because they were too long just to tie normally.. thats just me though.

And Tialata.. I think he just loves his current set of boots, which probably tore apart at the bottom, and he doesn't want to replace them, so tape does the fix! Or.. maybe it gives him special scrummaging powers  maybe?

The way they're taped I would guess for ankle support.

I know of some players that have shoe contracts, dont like the contracted shoe, get another pair and tape them up to obscure the other shoes labeling. Some will even go to drawing in the contracted logo on the tape. Of course they do this too long and bye bye shoe contract.

That is definitely one reason why they do it :D
Another reason why they do that could be to protect his laces from getting hooked by another players' stud during rucks and mauls

i think its because the laces are so long on the boots that you'd either be stuck with massive knots or you have to wrap under the boot in order to loose some lace. also, the tap helps ensure the laces dont come undone whilst playing
