I maintain those books would never have been as huge as they are now had it not been for the movies.[/b]

Load of nonsense Matt, those books were huge even before there was any talk of the films. I remember reading the first three books before the first film was released, and I wasn't the only one. And that was the translated Dutch version.

Also, that's not what happens in The Bell Jar. I honestly forgot how it ends, so a collective suicide isn't in that book (it's something I would have remembered)

Just modernised a fairytale for German (so, in German *shudder*), does anyone know what 'Frau Holle' by the Grim Brothers is called in English? It's about a lazy girl and a helpful girl, and an old lady with big teeth comes in at some point and if you shake her cushions really hard it snows n this world.

Works for me. RC's avatar has the same effect.

Guess this is it:

I like the Grimms stories - model for all horror story collections.

The Bell Jar is good American style observation - jokey angst.

I'm a big fan of fairytales, both the cleaned up version and the versions before (sleeping beauty waking up because the twins she just gave birth to (father is a king of a neighbouring country who impregnated sleeping beauty while she was still asleep) were hungry and in their search for milk sucked the poisonous thorn that kept her asleep out of her finger).
But not if I have to re-write one.

I was made aware of this true story by my housemate just today! She got raped by 'Prince Charming', gave birth to twins and then he ate them??!!!

I think it depends on what version you read, I don't remember the king eating the twins, but that might just be because I read a different version.

Anyone read those Twilight books here? My friends are literally addicted to them (It drives me f**king nuts how they go on about it every day - and I'm like, "WTF? WHY THE HELL ARE YOU STILL TALKING ABOUT THAT GODDAMN BOOK?!"); however I've just witnessed a 160 page thread on Rottentomatoes dedicated to bashing the movie (and the books), so I may consider not asking my friend if I can borrow it. That is of course, unless somebody can convince me (if they've read it) that it would be worthwhile to read it and the rest of the series...[/b]

Isn't any good, the first half of the book (as opposed to the latter half) is pure crap, absolutely nothing happens. It's kind of like the first half of Hostel, except in Twilight you don't see anyone naked/everyone naked.

I'm reading a couple of Jodi Picoult books at the moment. They're all really good.

Fair point by Laetca. Surely the film deal only got done because of the book publishing success. You have to set a critical mass of sales after the film to claim that the film deal made the books.

Never read Harry Potter, so what do I know? I've heard they're good. Who cares? Non comprehendo.

Out of interest - can anyone give a link to an outstanding passage in a HP book?

No, becuase none exist.
It's a series of books filled with hundreds of pages of childish drivel and silly names that would never be used. Any any society!

Then again, i've never read any of the books. And i'll happily live on in ignorance for the rest of my life - never watching a HP film or reading a HP film.

WAT? D:
Sorry for being picky. Or was that intentional? Oh, obviously it was intentional; how silly of me! :p
Yeh, you're right though, the books really aren't reknowned for the writing. They're a bit like the Twilight books (from what I've heard) to be honest, except that story in Harry Potter is marvelous whereas it's utter tosh in that vampire series...
Oh, for relevance, I've just ordered 5 books online: Dracula (It's so good I want my own copy. :p), The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, The Woman in White (recommended by my teacher; no idea who wrote it), 1984 by George Orwell and Homer's The Odyssey. Should keep me entertained after I can be arsed to read The Bell Jar...

Read all of them bar the Woman in White. Excellent choices. The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favourite pieces of literature in teh wurldz evaaarrrrrr!! Wilde is a deity.
