Uruguay Teros vs USA Eagles

A big, big match coming up tommorrow from Montevideo, Uruguay when the second best countries from North and South America go head to head in a World Cup qualifying match.

I am very, very interested in this game and have great news: the game will be broadcast live in Brazil. Just to make sure people understand the significance of this remember that no other match will be on ESPN at all. Not Ireland vs Australia, not England vs Argentina, not Italy vs New Zealand. None. Only France vs South Africa will be on the French channel, starting in a few hours on TV5 Monde. I am about to go buy beer for the big game in Toulouse in fact. So, a bit of a coup for rugby in Brazil with Uruguay hosting the USA.

In terms of the match, the USA are big favorites and I cannot see them losing. Their backs are significantly better much like France vs Italy. Uruguay has some world class players notably captain, Rodrigo Capo (Castres, France), who is playing great rugby well this season. He will play 8 vs the USA against a guy with a great future: Nic Johnson. Uruguay will probably have the better scrum. They do have great forwards and pro players in Europe but Capo is the only one playing at the top level. They do have, in their team, prop Mario Sagario (Dax, France 2nd division), flanker Nicolás Brognoni, (Oyonnax, France 2nd division) and prop Alejo Corral (SIC, Argentina) who will play off the bench. The USA has long had problems in the forwards but they have looked better since the 2007 World Cup. Todd Clever playing Super 14 rugby is a perfect example of this. The back row of Stanfill, Clever and Johnson is outstanding. Better than the Canadian, Tongan and Samoan backrows in my opinion.

The USA backs are largely European based professionals. Who on this planet does not know who Zee Ngwenya is? He has been the form winger in France this season. His 3 tries vs Gloucester in the Heineken Cup were all outstanding. His partners at 12 (Sifa), 13 (Emerick) and 15 (Wyles) are all doing well for their clubs this season. While Mike Hercus continues to be a reliable flyhalf. Not up there with the best but too good for los Teros. Without question, Uruguay will need to play 10 man rugby and dominate in the front five. I think, if they do so and so well they will still not be strong enough to defeat the United States but will give themselves the best chance to do so.

USA to win by by over 15 points.

This should be a good game.
I've become fond of the eagles as of late and they played and ugly but hard game and put a really hard worked for win over canada in the summer.
They are the favourites here, but the one player i always enjoy watching - and always puts in 100% - is Todd Clever. Playing in the Super 14 helps this man to no end.
Hoping for a comfortable win for America tomorrow.

USA won 27-22...

Looks like it was a close game, but it certainly was not. The USA were far superior in all parts of the game except for scrums as Uruguay did very, very well and dominated them, pushing them back every time. With 2 minutes to go the USA were winning 27-12. The referee, fof some starange reason, played an extra 3 minutes so it was a 43 minutes second half. In which time Uruguay scored their only try after a US mistake at a ruck which scrumahlf Juan Camponar kicked from the base of a ruck and fullback, Etchverry scored in the corner. Uruguay di well to come back but it merely disguised the reality of the game as the USA were far to creative in back play and players like Johnson and Clever were highly visible around the park.

Uruguay did do better in the backs than I expected but the skills of the North Americans was always going to be that much better. Only one of their backs are U.S. based, they are all professionals except flyhalf Hercus who plays in Australia for the Gold Coast Stingrays. They U.S based back, Kevin Swiryn scored a very good try late in the first half showing a lot of speed.

Game two next week with Uruguay needing to win in Fort Lauderdale, Florida by 6 or more points. Any other result will see the USA Eagles book their spot at the World Cup in Pool C (Australia, Ireland, Italy and Europe 2) Uruguay, should now be a strong contender for the Play off Winner's place at the World Cup (Pool B with Argentina, England, Scotland and Europe 1).

Mate you are a rugby information machine, but it's the Sunshine Coast Stingrays :p. Otherwise keep it up.

Total Rugby will show highlights.

USA Rugby has a video thing set up that isn't working at the moment, but they usually have all the matches for replay available online.
The Main thing I noticed is that USA Rugby has switched from Canterbury to Adidas (which we had years ago). Would be interested in hearing why, as they were a major sponsor for the team on top of kit suplier.
