U20 6 Nations 2017- Stars of the Future: If there's grass on the pitch play ball

Carl Hayman was prob the only prop that was over 6ft that could technically beat most other props although he did struggle at times against some of the top smaller LH's.

Lock is the obvious choice I mean Skeleton ain't silmmer of the year.

Uini Antonio 6'5, 155kg. Just a little bit smaller and shorter and he does alright for himself.

Personally I'd prefer a 6'7 prop to a second row that can't be lifted. I guess it will just depend on how he develops. I'm interested to see how he does in scrums.

2/3 inches make a hell of a lot of differences in the front row. (And in many other things ;) ) and also at 17 will still most Likely be growing.

Maybe the NFL will be after him.

Not all locks are jumpers esp if you have a Tall athletic 6 and 8 (which a few French teams have).

I know jumping isn't a necessity for locks, but I do believe it's something that they should all be able to do. I also don't anyone who is 160kg or near it will have anywhere near the work rate required from modern locks, they are effectively just tall flankers.

Does anyone have any idea of how he does in scrums? Because if he can do it, then why not keep him at prop. If he really is a liability, then he needs to shed, I'd have thought, at least 30kg to make it as a lock. Skelton is 140kg and still sluggish and can't be lifted in the lineout.

Plus, surely if he really is faulted in the scrum by his height, surely he'd be in a different position by now? If he really couldn't work as a prop, I can't see why he'd be in the French squad there.

He's lost a lot of weight since the D2.... he was down to 143kg in the RWC and is listed as 137kg by EPCR this season.

He's also not exactly a scrummaging monster.

As Tigs says... 1 or 2 inches makes a big difference.

Because he's a 160kg 17 year old - it would be surprising if he wasn't dominating 17 year old boys in the scrum.

You can't compare scrums at u20 level to scrums at Senior level let alone U18 so I can't say.

At 17 he prob will be moved most players are not moved till 18/19/20 the odd times even later (Tom Youngs)

The French team in general thinks Mass = Amazing, Skills = Meh. (Anyone remember a certain poster who got Perma banned who liked that way of thinking ;) ). UBB said that the likes of AAC won't win you games and that they are looking for the next Basteraud. Sums it all up. (Think a lot of French clubs would like a team of 18+ stone monsters with little skill.

My point is that being in an international developmental side, if the coaches and powers that be believed that as he ages he won't be able to compete in the scrum, they'd have looked to move him elsewhere by now.

By now?

He is only 17 FFS, Sheridan was still playing at lock/8 till he was 20.

And scrums at u18 and u20 tell you fek all about how he can handle senior rugby becuase a lot of props are not experienced enough to counter that sort of size.

I've also not actually seen anything to suggest he's played as a prop - as I say, not 6 months ago he was playing lock for the u19's.

LCD was a LH until his last year of u20 rugby.

Munster have a 196cm prop in the academy, Brian Scott. He played a bit for Ireland U20s and struggled but he has done well this season when called on. Maybe those types of props might get away with it because all teams are picking bigger men at prop.

The best scrummager in Ireland is Denis Buckley who is about 175cm.

Reports say he came on from the bench at Prop in the SA tour international series thing.

Weird typo, the wink emoji is very far away from the crying one...

Interesting choice at scrum half with Andrew Simmers of Heriots . Grand father was Brian Simmers a talented International centre and his grand father who was an internationalist of the 1930s . Simmers has been a star performer for Heriots and ability to match the pedigree .

Mup the chung wuns. Munster needed Calvin Nash for the senior squad which is bad news for the Under 20s, but still.
Some nice players there. Stewart, Larmour and Kelly are the pick of the backs with Doris and Gallagher the best forwards. Calvin Nash is a loss to the squad but he'll develop more playing in the Pro12 for Munster than he will playing an u20 game. Bill Johnston and Rob Lyttle are others who'd improve the backs. Scrum could be a worry.

What sort of health screening do these kids get? 150 / 160kg are obscene amounts of weight. We should probably be more worried about the strain on their hearts than where they pack down in the scrum

Should be alright, unless there's some sort of pre-existing condition - the problem would come over time being at that weight, I would imagine.

A lot of big kids just ballon up in their mid/late teens - as I say, Billy Vunipola was 150kg as a teenager. I doubt he's even put much effort into it, if he has at all.
