The Reconstruction of Irish Rugby 2016

I think it'll be a good appointment. He's a good motivator and being outside his comfort area of England I think he will play a good role. Rugby League brains usually make good defense coaches. And remember Farrell will only be on defense here unlike with England doing backs work too

Farrell did a good job for the Lions in his defence- and theirs (hur hur hur). It was only the influence he had outside of his roll at England that was negative.

What even was his role at England (short memory)? Backs or something. Wrong.
He's fine for defence coach though.

Meh I think he's a bad egg . He seems to upset the apple cart wherever he goes . Sarries weren't exactly jumping at the opportunity to get him back . As a matter of fact they weren't interested in the slightest . Seems like a bully boy when he doesn't get his own way if you ask me

I might be wrong but I'm glad the Irish have signed him are there any other **** English coaches we can spread around the six nations teams to weaken them up ? Haha

Wasn't that the logic behind sending Lancaster to Japan? They were starting to look like a threat...

Andy Farrell as defensive coach?
Shouldn't this thread be ***led the De-construction of Irish rugby?

Believe a 35 man squad is due to be announced after the weekend. Here's an attempt at what Schmidt will pick:

Props: McGrath, Healy, Furlong, Moore, Ross, Kilcoyne

Hookers: Best, Strauss, Cronin

Locks: Toner, McCarthy, Ryan, O'Connor

Backrows: Heaslip, O'Brien, Ruddock, Stander, Henry

Scrumhalves: Murray, Reddan, Marmion/McGrath

Outhalves: Sexton, Jackson, Madigan

Outside backs: Trimble, Earls, Fitzgerald, Henshaw, Payne, Kearney x2, McCloskey, Payne

Hopefully edit in reasons why later, probably forgotten a player or two. Only realised when finished that there was no room for Ringrose. If Henshaw isn't fit for the first week I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him included though Marshall could also get it. I could also be completely wrong about the number 35 and Schmidt could go shorter than is traditional in some positions. I also expect that some players not in the official squad will still train with the squad as per usual.

No that is argue against it I think guys he may well include that aren't on your list are
Zebo
O'Donnell
White
Gilroy
Also you've Payne in twice.
I'd hope guys like Ringrose are in squad. Healy may be omitted as he will probably miss first 2 games

I suppose I can't argue too much with that really.

I would have preferred a bit more aggressiveness with youth, such as:

Mike McCarthy --> Alan O'Connor
Andrew Trimble --> Matt Healy
Eoin Reddan -> James Hart
Rob Kearney -> Garry Ringrose

I would also have dropped Zebo (*****e form and overrated) for Gilroy.

On those.
McCarthy is in super form. Probably the form lock in Ireland at moment.
Trimble is the most solid wing we have.
I agree Reddan is done but McGrath is unlucky.
Payne may be 15 but unlikely so Rob deserves his spot.
Regards Zebo. I wouldn't disagree. His form has improved lately but he's lucky to get in but I think it's more he's the reserve 15

I don't see McCarthy, Reddan or Trimble going to the next RWC.

Nor do I see a team that absolutely needs their presence (like say POC).

My 15 would actually be Henshaw with Ringrose at 13 and McCloskey at 12. Payne would be squad cover.

[Does anyone really see Ringrose, barring injury, not being the first choice 13 in 3 years time?]

Happy enough with that squad got 26.5/35 right. Had been unsure whether to put AOC or Dillane in. Healy, Henry and Ross all excluded due to injury. Obvious area of weakness is the second row but if McCarthy transposes his form to international level there shouldn't be too many problems. Definitely a squad that can go for the Championship anyway.

The number of "project players" is creeping up I see.

I'd agree with that except I'd leave Trimble and swap Healy for Zebo. Strauss shouldn't be there either, on form.

It's ok saying we should build for next RWC but 6 Nations has always been our main aim. Add in this is a big championship for Schmidt if he wants the Lions gig. And it's vital for RWC seeding points
