The Official TRF International Shield

so its like a series
from the end of every world cup to the start of the next is one trf cup series

So before the World Cup starts, the holder of the Shield is declared the 2011 winner?

Current Standings in the last 4 years:

New Zealand - 4
South Africa - 4
Australia - 3
England - 1
France - 1

Okay, some, including my better half have said that i'm slightly obsessive :D ... but here is the current history of all 46 games to date compiled by me from mostly these sites ... you will note that it's not always the dominant team that is he current holder :)

Lets assume SA hold onto it until the WC now.

In the group stage they could then draw all of their group games and fail to progress, but because they've not been beaten they can't lose the shield. Therefore someone else wins the World Cup but doesn't hold the shield.

Unlike that other thing which goes around, the TRF shield tracks the "World Champion" after the tournament is over, as though it were a boxing-belt where it's up for grabs every match thereafter.

Yes, there's also the remote possibility that a current holder might not qualify for the RWC, for example a second tier nation wins it from a first tier nation, who then loses it to a third tier nation that hasn't qualified for the RWC ... while the third tier nation is a legitimate holder, the objective of syncing it with the RWC champion every four years would fail.

... not sure if there needs to be an overall winner for the TRF shield for the four year period, it's probably enough to have a current Champion/holder, and maybe a record of the most successful defenses etc

It'd be so funny if in an interview, after a 'a TRF ***le match' if when asked where this performance came from today, the winning captain replied..

'Today was a special day for our nation, we needed no motivation today.. we knew what was at stake. It doesn't get bigger than the TRF International Shield. This was our RWC Final.'

I think TRF has been mentioned here, if not by name directly.

TRF International Shield FTW!

should we have a raeburn sheild thread then (or rename this one) as its the same idea but its been running longer than trf one?

Blatantly stole the idea from us (and evidently stole my time machine too...)

Australia 39 v 20 South Africa (Tri Nations), ANZ Stadium, Syndey Australia (23/7/2011)
New Zealand 30 v 14 Australia (Tri Nations), Eden Park, Auckland, New Zealand (6/8/2011)

So it stays like that 'till the WC QF then

Nope come World Cup time, the tournament is frozen... Then the winner of the World Cup becomes the Shield Holder at the end...
