A very understrength squad:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
The Leinster 'A' team to face Connacht 'A' in Wednesday's Interprovincial derby at Donnybrook (KO: 5pm) has been named... Leinster 'A' Coach Colin McEntee said: "The squad have been training hard ahead of Wednesday's game which will be the last chance to impress before the start of the British & Irish Cup later this month. "This will be an opportunity for players to express themselves in a strong, competitive environment and with a few players away on national duty this week, it enables us to broaden the selection base. The players are looking forward to the game and we will approach the game in a positive frame of mind."

Paul O'Donohoe captains the side which includes first team players Trevor Hogan and Ronan McCormack for the visit of the Westerners, with Hogan partnering Ciaran Ruddock at second row and Lansdowne's Eoin Sheriff forming an exciting back-row partnership alongside Jordi Murphy and Paul Ryan.

With the Ireland Under-20 players in national camp this week, a number of club and young development players feature in the squad.

LEINSTER 'A':

15: Niall Morris (Blackrock College)
14: Michael Keating (Clontarf)
13: Darren Hudson (St. Mary's College)
12: Kyle Tonetti (Blackrock College)
11: David Kearney (Lansdowne)
10: David McAllister (Terenure College)
9: Paul O'Donohoe (Clontarf) CAPTAIN

1: Ronan McCormack (UCD)
2: Jason Harris-Wright (Clontarf)
3: Jack McGrath (St. Mary's College)
4: Trevor Hogan (Blackrock College)
5: Ciaran Ruddock (UCD)
6: Eoin Sheriff (Lansdowne)
7: Jordi Murphy (Blackrock College)
8: Paul Ryan (Blackrock College)

REPLACEMENTS:

16: Tom Sexton (Old Belvedere)
17: Ben Barclay (Clontarf)
18: Mark Flanagan (UCD)
19: Robin O'Sullivan (Bective)
20: David Moore (Blackrock College)
21: David Lynch (UCD)
22: Andrew Boyle (UCD)

REFEREE: David Wilkinson (IRFU), ASSISTANT REFEREES: David Keane (IRFU), Edward Kenny (IRFU), 4th OFFICIAL: Gary Glennon (ARLB), 5th OFFICIAL: Richard Carson (ARLB)[/b]

McAllister was last seen in a Leinster jersey during Declan Kidney's season in charge. I seem to recall him having a siege gun boot and nothing else. I would have thought James Power of Blackrock would be a better option - he was in the academy last season. The u20's are unavailable yet Robin O'Sullivan, David Lynch, Andrew Boyle, Darren Hudson and Jordi Murphy who weren't deemed good enough for that squad are in the Leinster 22! That's not to say they're bad players but it shows how seriously depleted the Leinster selection is.

Clongowes is wery good at forming backs look at the likes of d'arcy, mcfadden and there is a very good youg lad called pather timons coming up

I've heard there are a couple of very talented guys in Clongowes at present - Stephen McAuley (centre) and James (?) Gilsenan (a backrow or 2nd row). They spearheaded an excellent Junior Cup side two seasons ago.

Leinster 'A' recorded a fine 31-3 victory over their Connacht counterparts at a wintry Donnybrook on Wednesday evening... Four first half tries propelled the hosts to a resounding win against a dogged Connacht who began brightly and took the lead in the third minute thanks to a penalty from scrum-half Adam Kennedy.

From the subsequent re-start Jordi Murphy was yellow carded and Connacht enjoyed a spell of pressure, but some superb work from the Leinster pack laid the platform for a fast sweeping move and Michael Keating snuck in the corner to give the hosts the advantage after 13 minutes.

David McAllister's conversion fell wide of the upright and the score remained 5-3, but some superb play from David Kearney who burst through the Connacht midfield four minutes later doubled Leinster's lead as the former Ireland Under-20 winger found the onrushing Niall Morris who cruised in for the easiest of tries under the posts at the Bective end. McAllister added the points.

The game ebbed and flowed and Keating exploited a number of gaps with some powerful breaks, while second row duo Ciaran Ruddock and Trevor Hogan impressing in the loose.

Then in the 35th minute a superb Paul O'Donohoe break found Kyle Tonetti who offloaded to Morris who set up Kearney with an acute inside pass to touch down - and out-half McAllister added the conversion - to give Leinster a commanding 19-3 lead. But Leinster weren't finished and Jack McGrath scored from close range in injury time after some good close in work from Jason Harris-Wright and then Hogan to give Leinster a 26-3 half-time lead as McAllister added his third kick of the evening.

With conditions declining Connacht out-half Conor Murphy kicked off the second half and their pack fought hard.

Driving wind and rain made handling difficult though McAllister almost scored his side's fifth try on the hour mark but he was denied by the Connacht rearguard.

With Leinster dominating for large spells, O'Donohoe was proving a real threat for the home side and the Clontarf man was the source of their most promising second half incursions.

Leinster had to largely make do with the profits from their first half plunder, though a late pushover try from replacement Ben Barclay added some late gloss. LEINSTER SCORERS: Michael Keating, Niall Morris, David Kearney, Jack McGrath, Ben Barclay (1 try each), David McAllister (3 conversions)

CONNACHT SCORER: Adam Kennedy (1 penalty)

REFEREE: David Wilkinson (IRFU), ASSISTANT REFEREES: David Keane (IRFU), Edward Kenny (IRFU), 4th OFFICIAL: Gary Glennon (ARLB), 5th OFFICIAL: Richard Carson (ARLB)[/b]
I don't recognise many of those Connacht names (Tamani, Kennedy, the props, Moran and the 8 is about it) so it's hard to gauge how good a result it was for an understrength Leinster team. It's good to read that the backline were working well though,

Snoop I heard alot about Paul O'Donohoe and that he is an excellent scrum-half,

Is this true or what?

I think he is class, Cheika seems to hate his guts. Chris f***ing Keane gets picked ahead of him :p

A mate of mine who props for Dolphin, said, as well as playin well, he nearly bumped him!!!!

He seem to be the key man in the televised matches by RTE last year. Can't remember if twas cup or league. Think he played a few games for leinster and he was capable.

He hasnt been seen much to be honest. Aside from a cameo against LI in pre-season (he only got about 25 mins I think) I havent seen a bit of him.

However its the same for all of these prospects. Until they deliver its all potential.

He's a good player and certainly has the talent to step up. He played a few games last season (2 or 3) and was more than adequate. He'd be in the same vein as Tomas O'Leary or Eoin Reddan in that he likes to attack the gainline and take quick taps more so than a Peter Stringer type of scrum half.

He hasn't featured for the first team this season but the fact that he's captained the As a couple of times this season shows that he's in Cheika's thoughts. In my opinion he, and Fergus McFadden, are in the same position as Johnny Sexton last season - talented but needs to step up a bit before earning slots in a full strength squad.

Jennings to train with Brumbies

SHANE JENNINGS is due to depart for Australia to train with the ACT Brumbies and a rugby league franchise, during their pre-season, to ensure he returns in peak condition when his suspension ends on January 6th.Leinster’s contacts in Australia through head coach Michael Cheika and Alan Gaffney have obviously provided Jennings with the opportunity. This is not an official move, nor will he be playing any matches which would contravene ERC rules.

The Leinster vice-captain and five times capped international flanker was surprisingly found guilty of an act of bad sportsmanship in contravention of Law 10.4 (l) in that he made contact with the eye area of London Irish’s Nick Kennedy in the Heineken Cup round one game on October 10th.

Cheika has highly critical of the 12-week suspension, upheld on appeal, but with Jennings also ruled out of this month’s international window, when he looked certain to feature, along with rounds three and four of the Heineken Cup in December and Magners League action until the New Year, training in Australia was seen as a decent outlet for the 28 year-old.

Despite the incident being considered a low end offence, the 12- week minimum for contact with the eye area was put in place after Springbok Schalk Burger and Italian captain Sergio Parisse received eight-week suspensions for more blatant acts last summer.

This is not the first time an Irish player has switched hemispheres during a suspension. In 1998 Peter Clohessy signed a short-term contract with then Super 12 franchise the Queensland Reds following a 26-week ban for stamping on France’s Olivier Roumat in a Six Nations international in Paris.

Meanwhile, Cameron Jowitt has joined Super 14 outfit the New South Wales Waratahs. Released by Leinster last season, the 26-year-old Kiwi played for Northland in the New Zealand provincial championship recently but due to Australian ancestry he will not be considered a foreign player. Despite playing most of his rugby in Ireland on the blindside flank, Jowitt has been signed as a lock.[/b]

Interesting about Jennings. Hopefully the "break" will refresh him and training with the Brumbies will expose him to new ideas.

As for Jowitt, how did he manage that?!

This is the current betting on Paddy Power surrounding the next Leinster head coach:
http://www.paddypower.com/bet?action=go_ty...mp;disp_cat_id=

In as 5th favourite at 7/1 is Damien Hill. Who's Damien Hill?[/b]

he's coached Sydney University, and won 3 Premierships for what that's worth, but only got that from a mention in an article about Gary Ella leaving Randwick.

"Let's not even begin to calculate the chances of Leinster becoming European champions. Certainly, the likelihood of it beating Leicester - conquerors of the Springboks last week, let's not forget - in the Cup final without the efforts of European player-of-the-year Elsom would have been pretty much next to none."

My favourite quote from some Aussie correspondant. Thought you guy's would enjoy that.

The guy was clearly watching seeing as he knew that BOD was captaining the Leinster side and all.

The Leinster squad to face Plymouth Albion in the opening round of the British & Irish Cup on Saturday in Brickfields (KO: 4.30pm) has been named...Leinster can call on the services of close season signing Richardt Strauss for the first time after he impressed for the Cheetahs recently ahead of his move. The 23-year-old hooker is included in the 22 man squad for the trip to the southwest of England alongside an exciting blend of youth and experience.

Fresh from the province's 31-3 victory over Connacht 'A' in Donnybrook, the coaching team can now call on the likes of Andrew Conway, Brendan Macken, Rhys Ruddock and Dominic Ryan who were all unavailable for that game due to their involvement with the Ireland Under-20 training camp.

Shaun Berne, Trevor Hogan and Stephen Keogh have also been included in the panel for Leinster's first game in the inaugural competition.

Leinster squad to face Plymouth Albion...

FORWARDS: Mark Flanagan, Jason Harris-Wright, Trevor Hogan, Stephen Keogh, Stewart Maguire, Ronan McCormack, Jack McGrath, Ciaran Ruddock, Rhys Ruddock, Dominic Ryan, Paul Ryan, Richardt Strauss

BACKS: Shaun Berne, Andrew Conway, David Kearney, Michael Keating, Simon Keogh, Brendan Macken, Ian McKinley, Niall Morris, Paul O'Donohoe, Eoin O'Malley[/b]
That's a powerful squad. Great to see Richardt Strauss involved after an excellent Currie Cup with the Cheetahs. Likewise, Eoin O'Malley making the squad after his injury woes in a big plus. At 18 or 19 he was sitting on the bench in the Magners League but injuries have decimated his last 18 months.

Just seen on RTÉ that Luke Fitzgerald has been ruled out from between 4 and 6 months following the knee injury he picked up yesterday. He sustained a ruptured lateral collateral ligament and will have surgery tomorrow.

I suppose this will mean we'll see a back three of Kearney, Nacewa and Horgan for the big games for the remainder of the season. While it's awful news, it will present players like Dave Kearney, Niall Morris, Andrew Conway and Michael Keating with an opportunity to get some gametime for Leinster over the coming months. It makes the British and Irish Cup all the more important for those players.
