For that Blues - Highlanders match:

Controversial referee Steve Walsh has been given a "telling off" by SANZAR referees boss Lyndon Bray for his performance in the Blues victory over the Highlanders in Round 8.

Walsh's performance was reviewed and marked down by Bray as he asked TMO Ben Skeen to make rulings on tries following requests from the players - mostly Highlanders.

The Blues won the match 29-18 and took 10 minutes longer than scheduled to Walsh's requests and an injury to Buxton Popoali'i.
Almost every try in the match went to the TMO but none were disallowed.

Under the new International Rugby Board extended TMO powers trial only a a referee, assistant referee or TMO can ask for footage to be reviewed in the build-up to a potential try in case there is a "clear and obvious" impediment and under no circumstances are players allowed to ask for referrals.

"From my perspective with my review of Steve ... there were a couple of occasions where he voiced an opinion that he go upstairs to check because of a complaint from a Highlanders player and that's really not what we're looking for," Bray told APNZ.

"If he had doubt anyway, that's what he needs to say, not reflect the player complaint."

After Walsh's performance Bray sent an email to his referees and reminded them of the correct TMO process.

"From a human nature point of view, it's inevitable that we will have players questioning from time to time," explained Bray.

"We are very lucky in our sport that it's pretty low key and it lacks the emotion of other sports ... but they are going to do it. "

"It's up to the referee to decide whether the evidence that he's seen on his way through supports the fact that there's doubt."

"What he shouldn't do is then announce to the world that we are going upstairs on the basis of a complaint because that would be wrong. "

"I don't have any issue with why (Walsh) used the TMO, but I do have an issue with the terminology that he expressed verbally because it makes us all feel like the players dictated that he went upstairs and that's not right.

"We're dealing with something that's very new, but again, that's not an excuse."

Walsh will be in charge of this weekend's Chiefs match against the Reds at Waikato Stadium and Bray said that apart from the TMO abuse Walsh had a good game.

"The only thing that clouds peoples' views is that we had a lot of referrals and it looked like different things were happening ... his actual general performance was very good."

A final decision on whether the IRB will retain the TMO's increased powers will be made by the IRB in May 2014.

This is what the new TMO protocol is about, trial and error. Refs will try new things as they spring to mind and at the end of the round the executives will decide what worked and what didn't. It's all in a process of sorting itself out and Steve will be mentioned a few times because he is a very innovative referee.

Pretty ridiculous sounding article but suppose you have to make it interesting with some emotive language...

..

Certainly not how he is described in the Northern Hemisphere.....having had a few good games since his "rapproachment" and change of nationality, he has had some shockers since then...............!

I like Walsh. Having gone to a local rugby match this past weekend and having a chance to see the play at referee eye level (instead of the tv's bird's eye view) I can't imagine how a referee can even begin to tell what the hell is going on! I've been spoiled by slo-mo playbacks and play-by-play commentary. :p

I hate the new TMO powers anyway. In my opinion the referee needs to take responsibility for the calls. If the referee (or either of the assistant referees) sees a forward pass he/they needs to call it, not ride it out and then go back in the case they score. As a player, if you knock the ball on - you can't have a do-over. I think what this has allowed is rugby to become overly pedantic. I can accept that every now and then the referee is going to make the wrong decision, but double and triple checking every try ruins it as a spectacle. Taking for example Steven Luatua putting a foot just in touch (by millimetres) throwing an offload which was caught by Conrad Smith, passed to Julian Savea who ran 65m to score under the posts). In my opinion it was the touch judges responsibility to put the flag up then. If he missed it or wasn't sure he should have let it slide - because had that gone on two phases later it wouldn't have had any impact. I just want the refs to do the job the first time and take some responsibility (what they get paid to do).

Not only that, it allows bias to slip even further into refereeing. Tries which are fairly clear cut get reviewed and heavily scrutinised, while others which are more dubious get let go. Any the TMO's also seem t **** up more, Hosea Gear's try being one of the worst examples I've seen. I'm happy with the TMO being able to review incidents of foul play on the big screen - but going back two phases has generally ****** me off. On ReUnion there was a poll in which around 50% of people voted that the TMO review powers were a positive, with only 6% disliking it. That said 25% said that the ref cam was a great new feature - so it really makes me dismay at the audience of ReUnion (which is in general a pretty good show).

I completely agree, the TMO powers are a joke. Sure, use them for foul play and in the last phase of a try, but all this going back 2 minutes to find a forward pass is the stupidest crap I've ever seen. Perfect example was the Crusaders try vs the Force on the weekend. Who cares about a tiny forward pass? play on!

But that is the way pro rugby is going so get used to it. And the reason is because people take it way too seriously. There is no sense of "have a beer with the enemy after the game" (which I'm sure the players do), because after every game all the clubs, executives, fans ad lobby groups spend the next week whinging about **** the players couldn't care less about. It's all about money.

The best option is to be passionate and enjoy your club rugby, but watch super rugby/test level for a bit of entertainment - because that's all it is nowdays. Too much money, and treated like a business not a sport.

what I don't understand is how can the TMO's get things so wrong? Have seen some absolute shockers recently from TMO's. See the replays, all the commentators agree it's one thing and I definitely agree then the TMO comes back with a totally different decision. Bloody joke.

Im sorry but Walsh is a joke he cares about himself and his image . I think it was highlanders vs blues when he changed his mind after looking at the big screen when nonu shoulder charged someone and anyone who turns up ****** to a game should be banned from refereeing for life IMO .

Because 2009 is such a modern incident. People make mistakes. Alcohol is not a banned substance. Grow up.

How on earth did you come to that conclusion? I think in that example he showed he is not to big to admit he is wrong and change his call if he needs to. At the end of the day in that example the correct call ended up being made.
