Sports Personality of the Year

What Rory did was bigger than winning a world cup in any sport tbh.

But he also won his national open 40 mins outside Dublin so this isn't the right award for him.

Hate seeing formula 1 drivers nominated. Give the award to the car, it does all the work.
This would true if his team mate was nowhere near close to him winning.

Anyway congratulations Lando! I said to my father on Monday he probably wasn't popular enough to win it but this is a poor shortlist and wrongly the women won't be considered by a large portion of the general public.

It's a public vote and he's polarising but Mcilroy is just miles ahead of anyone on it in terms of his achievements in the year and what it means in the context of his career.

Bizarre that the golfer plays the most "legitimate" sport out of the male nominees.

Darts isn't a sport and golf is barely. If you can do it without changing your clothes or shoes it's a hobby. That includes whacking a ball with a stick.
You do wear diffrent shoes for golf....

I think in Britain he's seen as Irish rather than British he doesn't golf for us in the Olympics

I love that and do agree. But if this was a panel decision I do think he'd be a shoo in.

Pro golf has a reasonably high athletic barrier, loads of guys on the elite amateur circuits with flawless games who just can't carry a ball 300yds. Definitely a higher percentage not making it in golf based on the genetic lottery than f1. Lionel Messi, wouldn't have made it if he'd been a prodigy in golf rather than soccer for example.

I think the whole "golf isn't a sport" argument is about as valid as saying swimming isn't a sport because there's a fat guy at your local pool who is there every week using a floaty. Or soccer isn't because you saw a bunch of out of shape lads with 2 left feet playing 5 aside.

I was some what joking. I'll stick with the definition of if it requires a degree of physical effort and done competitively it's a sport. Even E-sports, lawn bowls and competitive eating.
