Murray IMO looks like he is struggling for fitness and perhaps has built himself up too much. Quite similar to what Jason Leonard did after his neck injury. The scrum is still the most important job for a prop but Murray hasnt shown he is superior to Vickery there so his lack of work rate was always going to be an issue.[/b]

When he came on against the Golden lions the first scrum went 5 metres. Against Western Province he won two penalties, and if Vickery had done that we'd be talking about how he won the game.

cyRil of Ospreylia likes this.

Adam Jones could well be the man. Before the tour I definitely thought it'd be Euan Murray getting the test jersey, I've always been impressed whenever I've watched him play and my Northampton supporting step-dad always sings his praises. He is still a very good scrummager and has shown that. Having said that, against the current world champions, should we not be looking for something more?
Yes I know that a Prop is primarily there to Prop but this is top level international Rugby. I'd say he could get away with it because Gethin Jenkins, as a dead-cert to make the team, will do two men's work as it is but why not have another who can scrummage and get around the park a bit? As Vickery can't scrummage, that man is Adam Jones. He's never going to be the fastest of front row forwards but he's gotten a lot better recently!

Murray I tell you. Set piece may be his only thing (dont forget lifting in the lineout) but that'll do nicely.

Vickery's a given I'd imagine especially given Rowntree's comments after Saturday's match, would still go with Murray personally.

Shame, the dirt trackers will miss him.[/b]
Hopefully he'll play in the 2nd and 3rd Test in the place where he deserves.

You and Vickery can bite my shiny metal ass!

ok have him in the test team. The Scots deserve at least one player in even if it is Murray.

There should be no "deserving", the best XV should be picked. However, I think Murray hasn't been given a chance and Vickery shouldn't start because he doesn't offer much in the loose, and Murray could destroy "the beast". And not only would that win us penalties (unlike Vickery who will cost us them) but it also would nullify "the beast" in the loose.

Thus Murray > Vickery.

A flanker has constructed an argument. That surely is enough evidence for Murray to start.

To quote some nutter from 606:

“Because Vickery plays for Wasps, and is the "raging bull".

And Murray has ceases to exist outside of the scrums, whereas King Vic of Cornwall smashes through the tacklers...

And Murray has blown all his chances, and he's had so many, and hasn't been restricted to 1 start.

And Murray was not the player who has enormously helped our scrum each time he came on, and was not the player who, indirectly, won us the game against Western Province.

And Vickery has been such a force at international level for so long, and is such a brilliant scrummager, and was not dropped by England, and only re-instated due to drugs.
"

Sums it up pretty well.

Vickery was ony selected in the squad because he plays for Wasps and used to play alongside Rowntree, he's been an average player for several years. He's going to start for the Lions despite only getting back into the England team because Stevens tested positive for droooogs. <_<

Murray ruled out of the first test because of the injury from the last game (from Lions website)
