Season in review: best player by position

For many good reasons!!!!

Perlease do not mention him in the same comment as FTD, Wilco and Sexton.......he is way, way below them in class and in everything that a 10 does!!!

Goodness....he is so bad there was a rumour he was coming to us!!!!!

Haven't seen him at all this year...I don't think he's *that* bad though. Obviously he's not in the same company as FTD, Wilko or Sexton, but the guy holds his own for sure.

CENTERS

1 - Matt Giteau (Toulon): no doubt, hands down, the best center in the league this year. Just makes stuff happen, all the time. A little hole to hop into, the right no-look pass to a teammate, changing direction judiciously and in a perfectly calculated way for his team's attack...the guy even excels when he takes on as his club's fly-half. Very witty, Rugby clever, crafty, and all that experience...
There are many very good centers in France atm, but he's above them all.

2 - Rémi Lamerat (Castres): at 24yo, this incredibly physically dense youngster (1m83, 105kg) has really exploded this year. We knew he was good last year, but this year is his year. Tackled by 5 Leinstermen and still going, thighs the size of my torso, strong upper body too, huge heart, big tackler and good on defense who can contest in rucks too (seen him snatch balls away from the opposition), comfortable throwing accurate chisteras (no-look, cradled) offloads. Pure power and dynamism along with very good technical command already. Has earned him his trip to Australia, although that may not be a blessing !! (My personal favorite player for the year)

3 - Matthieu Bastareaud (Toulon): a third rower who has the pace to play as a back. Two in one. Sits massive flankers down like they were skinny little scrumhalves and an accurate/consistent defender overall, contests in rucks like we're never sure from our TV angle if it's Steffon Armittage or him (not that brilliantly though), good pace, and will puncture holes way more often than not. Can start and be effective a whole match, or used as a powerful punch off the bench, Bastareaud at 25yo is finally starting to really use the enormous potential his frame offers.

Criticism: gets emotional and that can hinder his decisions (like a drop goal "attempt" out of nowhere...) and tends to kill plays because his vision just isn't where it should be and settles for a little pile on the ground in stead of letting the ball live.

4 - Félix Le Bourhis (Bordeaux): he's a center, that's right, a CENTER. Just in case Saint-André roams around these pages...apparently the most consistent player for his club, the UBB, and looking at the sort of attacking they've got down there, he must be good. I've watched Bordeaux a bit but don't know much about him. A good passer from what I understand, and a player who's very attack-oriented.

5 - Joe Rockoko (Bayonne): at 31yo, the Fijian born ex-All-Black is a lot more than just a shadow of his former self who came to France for a few easy bucks. He's an essential part of Bayonne's game, has scored 9 tries this season for an average of 78 minutes per game.

Mentions to: Gaël Fickou (Toulouse), René Ranger (Montpellier), Henry Chavancy (Racing), Benson Stanley (Clermont), Arnaud Mignardi (Brive).

Obvious remarks: Fofana doesn't appear here, neither in the Top 5 nor even in the mentions. Fair ? I don't think so. And Florian Fritz, the other regular starter at midfield for France, isn't within sight in this assessment either...
I mourn Yann David's out of form season too. Liked that guy a lot. And Rougerie really should be at least mentioned here.

I just don't rate Basta. Sure he has bulk, I mean mass, but his handling and passing is awful for a centre, and just kills his outside backs. He can get away with it for Toulon sometimes, with Mitchell and Habana being world class, but it's exposed for France.

Giteau, excellent player, going to have some big boots to fill next year, but I think he can do it.

Basta will get there (the passing game). He's what we call a "coffre à ballons" in French. Buries the ball each time. But those flanker skills are invaluable at the breakdown and on defense for a center, and he does have pace and great body control during contact. And he's still just 25 although he was part of the French GS back in 2010.
Plus, he looks like such a harmless puppy, there's no way you would sit him on the bench.

Giteau teh man.

RR's final team of the season-

...now amended to

The Top 14 2013-2014 team as voted by Rugbyrama followers.

From Rugbyrama - Published on 15/06/2014 at 12:32

Here the team you selected from the 2013-2014 season.

1. Chiocci Xavier ( Toulon )

The young Toulon convinced 33% of users. The vote was very tight since the Clermont Thomas Domingo is just behind (32%).Bordeaux Jean-Baptiste Poux completed the podium (6%).

2. Craig Burden (Toulon)
The Toulon finishes far before the Clermont Benjamin Kayser (16%) and Bordeaux Ole Avei (14%).

3. Carl Hayman (Toulon)

The All Black pillar has garnered more than 42% of votes ahead of the Parisian Rabah Slimani (14%) and Clermont Davit Zirakashvili (12%).

4. Bakkies Botha (Toulon)

Huge plebiscite for the Springbok impressed you (54%). Surely the effect of his little kisses ...

5. Rodrigo Capo Ortega ( Castres )

Warriors you like. The Castres won 14% of the channels. A team Capo Ortega-Botha, it's scary. Both are ahead of Brive Arnaud Mela (11%) and Oyonnaxien Thibault Lassalle (5%).

6. Juan Smith (Toulon)

Its amazing back then we gave it lost the rugby you liked. 38% for the 2007 world champion. A beautiful plebiscite.

7. Yannick Nyanga ( Toulouse )

Nyanga harvested 19% of the vote. Beating the experienced Clermont Gerhard Vosloo (17%) and the Parisian Antoine Burban (6%). 2013 - Icon Sport

8. Steffon Armitage (Toulon)

Within the pack, it is he who has done the most unanimously: 55% for the Toulonais. Toulousain Louis Picamoles gets 17% and the Clermont Lee Fritz 8%.

9. Rory Kockott (Castres)

The scrum half and kicker of Castres remains a safe bet. But his lead over Toulon Sébastien Tilous-Borde is hardly huge (35% against 27%). The Clermont Morgan Parra finished third (12%).
10. Jonny Wilkinson (Toulon)

How could it be otherwise? The English star finished his season by lifting the Brennus and 48% of your votes. Despite strong performance, from the Montpellier 10 François Trinh-Duc remains at a distance (21%). Toulousain Luke McAlister and Clermont Brock James eventually tied for third (10%).

11. Metuisela Talebula (Begles Bordeaux)

One of the most undecided your votes with the left pillar posts. But you did not forget to highlight the rocket of UBB Metuisela Talebula, best try of the season in the Top 14 (24%) marker.

12. Matt Giteau (Toulon)

55% of the vote: all is said! One of the most popular of online players.

13. Rémi Lamérat (Castres)

This is for the centre of Castres, who just joined the XV of France, ahead of the Toulon Bastareaud (around 10% each). Sport

14. Hosea Gear (Toulouse)

If Toulouse did not reach the semi-finals for the first time in 20 years, you've enjoyed the benefits of the All Black Hosea Gear (20%). He was ahead of the Wallaby Toulon, Drew Mitchell (19%) and Toulouse Yoann Huget (9%).

15. Brice Dulin (Castres)

At fullback, both players are out of the lot: Brice Dulin and Delon Armitage . The international Castrais ends ahead of your votes with 39% of the vote before the Toulon (26%). The Bayonne Scott Spedding finished it far enough from the leading duo (7%).

I don't say this often, but I definitely feel Delon Arm. is overrated. If he wasn't a svelte, tall, African-type athletic fullback he wouldn't be mentioned at all. Obviously, his frame and physical ability should count, but I'm just saying he's quite raw and often looks like he just can't impact the game much.

I'm glad Drew Mitchell gets his mentions although he hasn't even really been used as a winger much, but played a central role in Toulon's back three and has tremendous consistency there where he offers his team great security and certainty. And the guy tackles in a way that he shouldn't. Natural born defender.

Happy to see Lamerat voted the best, quite justly. Again, a perfect combination of sheer force and graceful skill and technique. And still such a youngster, and so much heart. Too much even.

Chiocci can't be the best loosehead prop in the league, that's crazy. As for Domingo, he managed a fine season in Clermont but just what the hell is wrong with him in the scrum with France ??...shocking stuff.

Giteau, excellent player, going to have some big boots to fill next year, but I think he can do it.

Bastareaud's skill in the collision is great as YouTube will show, got some reasonable acceleration too. However his skill in contact is poor, often losing the ball as he gets tackled with an offload. His passing game just isn't there, but as you say he gets covered a bit at Toulon when he has the likes of Giteau alongside. His work rate and fitness also leaves something to be desired.

The one thing that always confuses me with Bastareaud. Is who looked at him when he was a kid and said he would be a back? If you saw him and didn't know what position he was you would guess he would be a prop. Perhaps he only gained that jelly belly after he went pro? He looks like just a fast prop playing in the backline to me.

And the flops of the season---

Morne Steyn-held out by Jules Plisson all year (who says the foreigners stop young French talent!)

Dan Lydiate-only had 11 games

JP Barraque-Off to La Rochelle for the next season

Digby Ioane

Soane Tonga'uiha

A ne pas oublier : Bryan Habana (Toulon), Stephen Brett(Bayonne), Dan Waenga (Biarritz), Putasi Luafutu (UBB),Sitaleki Timani (Montpellier), Saimoni Vaka (Bayonne), Olly Barkley (Grenoble).

A bit tough on Morne Steyn I think. Well, maybe not in the context of the Top 14.. so this thread in particular but he was the best 10 on the weekend in international games by far putting Le Roux in space to do his magic, kicking beautifully both in game turning George North on a number of occasions and at goal, hell he even had a good game on defence and forced a turn-over on the ground FFS! Morne Steyn dominating the Welsh pack on the gground!! And that is after his last game was a good performance against Samoa where he also stood out on defense even making a try saving tackle and on another occasion hitting some Samoan guy so hard that he dislogded the ball.. Morne Steyn hurting Samoan backs...

But that is test rugby and not Top 14 so ignore it.

Can't see how you can quote Timani as he did not arrive in Montpellier till Dec. Where did you get your facts from or were they copied from some I'll informed journo !!!

bingo ! ;) in Paris, he did none of that, and this is "Flops of the year in the Top 14" and he was a monumental flop, regardless of whether a psychological or physical reason.
Habana was a monumental flop as well. Played 10% of the year, and when he did play he just couldn't be all that striking. I'd have him in the Top 5 hands down, not sure wtf RR were thinking there...
not a shot at the Springboks, but those are clearly the two biggest flops of the year for me.

Digby Ioane wasn't great, but not that big a flop. He had some strong moments, just not very 'conclusive'. Lydiate hasn't been the flanker we've known for a while, so this 2013-14 season being mediocre isn't like a huge surprise, and Racing has crazy competition for that third row so...

Haha. I don't mind at all that Steyn and Habana (and Steenkamp) are flops for their Top14 teams as long as it wasn't RM92 or for the Bokke!

In fact I quite like it on many fronts;

- they are expensive players and are now bankrolled by French rugby freeing up space and cash for our up-and-commers while we still get the benefit of calling on them for test duty.
- their flopping will deter future signings of SA talent by Frech clubs (maybe in a small way... very small... possibly)
- weakens the opposition for RM92
- they get payed rest (bench and injury) and look fresh for the Bokke

yeah might be cool for a Saffa but it's pretty fkng disgusting for those clubs that pay the best cash in the world to get the "best" and get shiit in stead for a whole season...that's like spending millions on a French restaurant somewhere and getting a McDonald's as a result the whole year.

And it's not fantastic for a player's resume anyways. You look at a guy like Jonny Wilkinson: has won in England, then Grand Slam and World Cup with country, then comes to France and wins H Cups and a Brennus and was a big part of his team's success. A guy like Steyn isn't 30 yet and is wiping the bench while a 22yo rookie is collecting starts every week...acclimatization is a strength in itself and a quality not many players possess. As a pro athlete, you have to be able to cope and adjust no matter what, and that does go down in your resume when it's all said and done. You sign, again - for huge bucks, you're a grown man and can make your decisions, then you gotta take responsibility. Yes is yes, no is no, but ain't nothin' in between.

Sure I'd be pretty miffed if I was the club's owner. I do see these guys as pro's though. I doubt the reason for their drop in performance is due to attitude. But that is just pure speculation of course as I haven't the first clue as to what the conditions are.

they must be mostly if not entirely of a psychological order - as opposed to "physical", like, they don't have the level. For some guys, playing with not a single familiar face in your team or in the opposite team, a stadium you've never seen, refs speaking in French, your own coach is like a stranger to you, in a country, a climate, everything different - all that can be scary for someone because pro athlete or not, they're still mere people like you and me. They're not astronauts or military.
Then there's the style: some guys discover they're a lot more one-dimensional than they thought, and the world with them, as what worked in one circuit doesn't in the next.
Then there's just a lack of will and envy, which comes from the first point, a new environment.

I see them all as flaws anyways, because like I said, if you're a pro athlete you know what you're getting yourself into and should anticipate the greatest of challenges. You should put the bar really high, so when you get there it's not that bad. And after all, these guys do get to play with fellow countrymen all the time, they're in fckng Southern France, i.e. the place rich retired old ppl from Northern Europe would pay an arm to get a nice little spot in, and they're being paid way more than where they were previously (hence, the move there). So let's not make it sound like it's the ultimate sacrifice and these guys are going through Hell or anything :p

I don't sympathize at all, and I'm the kind of person who gets VERY attached to places and things. Sexton is a bish for being so home-sick all the time; embrace your new fkng challenge for God's sake and play hard.
