Northampton have announced the signing of highly-rated Russian winger Vasily Artemiev.

The 23-year-old, who is also comfortable at fullback, caught the eye with three tries in Russia's Churchill Cup campaign last season and is set to be a key part of Russia's World Cup plans in New Zealand later this year.

Artemiev will join Northampton from Moscow club VVA-Podmoskovie at the end of the tournament.

"I hope to help some of the younger players in the Russian national team make their way to Europe," Artemiev said.

"They are very keen and are capable of playing at that level, but they've never had the exposure or opportunity. Maybe my playing in England will help their careers as well."

Saints boss Jim Mallinder added: "Vasily really caught the eye during the Churchill Cup last year when he scored three really good tries. He has plenty of pace, awareness and raw talent. He is also eager to develop as a player, and we're looking forward to him being a part of the squad at Franklin's Gardens."

At the end of what tournament????
Does he mean World Cup but good signing

Gawd knows.

What I've read about him though is he's fookin' fast. Ngwenya-beating fast.

Is he just going to be another squad member or is Reihana going to be seeing bench time?

It's a very good signing for Saints. He has huge potential. A few years ago he played for the same schools team as Luke Fitzgerald in Blackrock and looked every bit as good as the Ireland international. Artemiev is lightning fast- give him a bit of space and he'll score.

Its a win win situation for both parties, nothing is really expected of him but from what you read and hear he could well be a decent acquisition for the Saints. Also nice seeing some tier 2 nation players getting to play in a good standard of league.
