Morgan Newman, a player who has struggled to find a regular place in the Stormers squad, has been called up to the national training squad for a match against a Namibian XV in Windhoek on Friday, May 29.

The 23-strong squad, announced by the national selectors on Tuesday, contains a number of other surprise selections.

The group includes 17 capped Springboks and six uncapped players. The uncapped players are Sharks flank Jean Deysel, Sharks lock Steven Sykes, Cheetahs prop Wian du Preez, Western Province centre Morgan Newman, Lions scrumhalf Jano Vermaak and Lions flyhalf Earl Rose.

Rose was in the Springbok squad at the end of last year but did not feature in the tests, while Du Preez toured England and Wales at the end of 2007 but did not play. Vermaak was in the 2007 Emerging SA squad at the IRB Nations Cup, while Newman featured for the Emerging side in 2007 and 2008.

Players not considered due to injury are Sharks flyhalf Ruan Pienaar and prop Deon Carstens. Lions centre Jaque Fourie was not considered as he is getting married on Saturday, May 30. The press release contained no mention of Francois Steyn, while the Bulls players (obviously including the injured Wynand Olivier) could not be considered due to their involvement in the Super 14 semifinal at Loftus on Saturday.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers said he was disappointed about Pienaar's injury but that it was important for the player to focus on his recovery in advance of the British & Irish Lions tour.

"Ruan is expected to be out for about three weeks and we will closely monitor his progress," said De Villiers. "I am hoping that he will be fit to play in the first test against the Lions in Durban but we are fortunate in that we have adequate cover in the flyhalf position if it is required."

Rose and Peter Grant are the flyhalves in the training squad while Morné Steyn can stake his claim in the Bulls' continued Super 14 campaign.

De Villiers said that despite the absence of the Bulls players he was still able to assemble a strong squad. He added that the game against the Namibian XV would allow him to test systems and plays in preparation for the Lions test series.

"Without the opportunity of a few warm-up games we must ensure that we get the most out of this match, regardless of the fact that some players are not in attendance. After this match we will assemble a Springbok squad that will have three weeks to prepare for the first Lions test (in Durban on June 20) and we have to maximise the time we have at our disposal," De Villiers said.

The SA training squad will assemble in Pretoria on Monday, May 25, and travel to Windhoek on Thursday, May 28.

The Springbok squad for the Lions series will be named on Monday June 1.

The SA training squad, which includes only one tighthead prop in John Smit, is:

Andries Bekker, Heinrich Brüssow, Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Jean Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis, Wian du Preez, Peter Grant, Adi Jacobs, Ricky Januarie, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira, Johan Muller, Odwa Ndungane, Morgan Newman, Jongi Nokwe, JP Pietersen, Earl Rose, John Smit (capt), Juan Smith, Adriaan Strauss, Steven Sykes, Jano Vermaak.[/b]

Morgan Newman!!!??? WTF? , he has only played about 2 or 3 Super Rugby games and he is in the SA training squad... , he probably is a talented player (I mean he plays for the Stormers :p ) but gheez being selected after only just starting to play in Super Rugby...<strike>(must be something to do with the quota system)</strike>

On the other hand I'm glad to see Jean Deysel, Steven Sykes, Jano Vermaak and Wian du Preez being selected as they all have had a super Super Rugby season and then not even to mention Heinrich Brüssow, what a talent!

Andries Bekker, Heinrich Brüssow, Schalk Burger, Jean de Villiers, Jean Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis, Wian du Preez, Peter Grant, Adi Jacobs, Ricky Januarie, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira, Johan Muller, Odwa Ndungane, Morgan Newman, Jongi Nokwe, JP Pietersen, Earl Rose, John Smit (capt), Juan Smith, Adriaan Strauss, Steven Sykes, Jano Vermaak.

My picks to make the test team out of this group are:

Schalk Burger - Unfortunately because of his name. There are much better players than him.
Jean de Villiers
Jean Deysel
Bismarck du Plessis
Adi Jacobs
Ryan Kankowski
Tendai Mtawarira
JP Pietersen
John Smit
Juan Smith

Hopefully vermaak gets the nod before stupid Januarie.

Yes, I once heard that the Mighty Chabal was going to play with them. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Are you Insane!?!?!? After he almost single handedly murdered them at the RWC, I HIGHLY doubt that he would play for the "Biltong Boere" (Namibia rugby team's nickname).

Anyhow here is The Namibian Invitation XV:

Jaco van der Westhuizen, Tonderai Chavhanga, Frikkie Welsh, Meyer Bosman, Llewellyn Winckler, Derick Hougaard, Rory Kockott, Jacques Burger, Duane Vermeulen, Jacques Nieuwenhuis, Nico Breedt, Dawid de Villiers, Kobus Calldo, Richardt Strauss, Kees Lensing ©.

Replacements: Hugo Horn, Johnny Redelinghuys, Ruan Vermeulen, Anton van Zyl, Wayne Julies, Jurie van Tonder, Chrysander Botha.[/b]

*Bolded are all the SA players as far as I know

I think I see what PdV is doing here. Many of those players in the invitational team are in contention for a Springbok spot. Most notably Kockott & Vermeulen. Many a bit of a trail going on here? For those 2 at least.

Looks like that Namibian XV will be changed due to Naka and the Cheetahs refusing to allow their players to be released for this match.

Positive: Allows the Cheetahs to be better prepared for their own match with the Lions.
Negative: Doesn't allow those players that were chosen to prove to PDV that they deserve to be in the Springbok squad.

France lock Sébastien Chabal is reportedly in negotiations to line-up for a Namibian Invitation XV against the Springboks during their preparations for British and Irish Lions tour.

Namibian Rugby Union are said to be in process of recruiting Chabal to face the Boks on May 29 in Windhoek.[/b]
Yeah, I'm f___ing bonkers, mate. The article is dated 06 April 2009. It's not the only one out there either:

So, I guess, what you are saying is it didn't end up happening and he won't be turning out for the Namibian INVITATIONAL XV...

Bosman added to SA training squad

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
The national selectors have added Vodacom Cheetahs centre Meyer Bosman to the SA training squad that will assemble in Pretoria on Monday to prepare for a practice match against a Namibian Invitation XV in Windhoek on Friday, May 29.

Bosman has played four times for South Africa, the last time being in 2006 against Australia.

Meanwhile, Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has called on all South Africans to get behind the Vodacom Bulls when they host the Chiefs in the Vodacom Super 14 final in Pretoria on Saturday.

"The Bulls have done South Africa proud by reaching the final and they deserve the support of the entire country," De Villiers said.

"They put in a fantastic performance to beat the Crusaders at the weekend and they have the capacity to go all the way. Knowing that they have the support of the nation will help to inspire them even more".[/b]

Not a bad choice at all, he has played for the Boks before and had a pretty good Super 14 this year.

I would have thought ol' Percy would be involved in this...wasn't he born in Namibia? This would have been a good bow out of rugby.

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers stuck with his penchant for springing surprises when he named Morgan Newman at outside centre for Friday night's warm-up match between a South Africa XV and a Namibian XV in Windhoek.

It is not so much that Newman is in the starting team for this only warm-up fixture for the coming series against the British and Irish Lions that is so surprising. Although he hardly played for the Stormers in the last Vodacom Super 14 season, and spent the bulk of the competition either in the Western Province Vodacom Cup side or on the Stormers bench, Newman is a talented player who some feel has a big future.

The shock though was the number that he will wear on his back for this game. When he has played there at senior level, such as in a Currie Cup match for WP last year, Newman looked anything but comfortable. He is more in the mould of a creative centre who should be in the playmaking position rather than a devastating finisher or pacy attacker on the outside.

These days the numbers on the centres backs is becoming less important. For instance, Jean de Villiers spends as much time standing outside Gcobani Bobo at the Stormers as he does inside his midfield teammate. But the man in the No 12 jersey for Windhoek, Meyer Bosman, is an out and out inside centre, one of those quite capable of playing flyhalf if asked to (it is of course where he made his international debut during the Jake White era).

The selection of Bosman and Newman may seem dubious, but the logic of playing them in this game might not be flawed. It is pointless for Newman to be called up to the squad, and not get a chance to show what he can do in a match situation, a fate that befell Ishmael Dollie, the controversial flyhalf selection in De Villiers's first squad of 2008.

As for Bosman, his inclusion in the squad, something that was announced on Sunday, could prove a master-stroke, particularly if first choice No 12 continues to battle injury. It is no secret that the Lions will employ the Welsh rush defence system in the three test series, and Bosman is a gifted field kicker who could combine with the flyhalf in showing up the big weakness in this defensive system by putting through well placed chips and grubbers.

Bosman, although he has not been used in the role for a while by the Cheetahs, is also a dab goalkicker when entrusted with the responsibility. Morne Steyn is staking a strong claim for the Bok No 10 jersey, but De Villiers may prefer to stick with his original choice, Ruan Pienaar, in which case a back-up goalkicker will be vital.

In this game there are actually going to be three goalkickers on the South African side. Earl Rose gets a chance to play fullback, but expect him to be replaced by JP Pietersen, included on the bench, at the halfway stage of the match. Like Pietersen, it is going to be interesting to see how Rose deals with the field kicking expertise of Derick Hougaard, who is down to play for the Namibian team.

A glance through the team suggests that this game is not really being used as an opportunity for combinations to gel and get reacquainted with one another, as De Villiers suggested earlier in the week, but a chance for the fringe players to show what they can do.

In some instances the team is helped by having well established provincial combinations playing together, such as a full Sharks front-row, with skipper John Smit playing from tighthead, and the WP pair of Ricky Januarie and Peter Grant combining at halfback.

The three uncapped players in the starting team are Rose, Nemwan and the impressive Sharks loose forward Jean Deysel. With Schalk Burger still injured, it will be interesting to see how Heinrich Brussow combines with Deysel on the side of the scrum.

There more uncapped players were selected on the bench in Cheetahs prop Wian du Preez, Sharks lock Steven Sykes and Lions scrumhalf Jano Vermaak.

"We know what we have in our established players and want to use this match as an opportunity to see what the new players offer and also give them an opportunity to show what they can do at another level," said De Villiers.

SA XV team is: 15. Earl Rose, 14. Jongi Nokwe, 13. Morgan Newman, 12. Meyer Bosman, 11. Odwa Ndungane, 10. Peter Grant, 9. Ricky Januarie, 8. Ryan Kankowski, 7. Jean Deysel, 6. Heinrich Brüssow, 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Johann Muller, 3. John Smit (captain), 2. Bismarck du Plessis, 1. Tendai Mtawarira.

Bench: 16. Adriaan Strauss, 17. Wian du Preez, 18. Steven Sykes, 19. Juan Smith, 20. Schalk Burger, 21. Jano Vermaak, 22. Jean de Villiers, 23. Adi Jacobs, 24. JP Pietersen[/b]

All Sharks front-row should be very strong, 9 and 10 combination between Ricky Januarie & Peter Grant should be good and then just look at that bench!<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>

Should be a walk in the park for the Springboks  <_<

I think PdV is wasting his time here. This talk about seeing if Newman can play on "the next level" is BS. Are the mediocre Frikkie Welsh & Wayne 'cant get a Currie Cup game' Julies the next level? WASTE OF TIME. Newman is 4th in the pecking order at the Stormers for a centre position. Bobo, JdV, Des Fountain and Grant are ahead of him.
Dont even get me started on Earl 'throw a quick line out on my 5m line to myself then get turned over and concede a try and then get move OUT of 15 because I'm more crap than my crap team' Rose. Urghh... Ludik should get a chance over that fool.
Januarie should NOT be there either, was kept on the bench by a 20 year old this whole season!!! And it looks like he's trying to do an impersonation of Caucau with that bellie of his. Lay off the fish and chips ek se, my owe, my china!

Positives are Jean Deysel, Jano Vermaak, Ryan Kankowski and Heinrich Brussouw. BTW I dont think Muller deserves to be there, he's the Sharks captain and all but he's woeful around the field. He's like the SA version of Steve Borthwick.

Hopefully, Duane Vermeulen will smash newman. It's a shame because I would have wanted Luke Watson to play if he hadn't caused so much controversy.

Bok coach satisfied with Windhoek exercise

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
The Namibian XV gave the shadow Springboks one heck of a game for most of the way in what was really a glorified trial for some of the South African fringe players -- but Peter de Villiers did not give the impression afterwards that he was going to lose any sleep.

The Springbok coach, reflecting on a laboured 36-7 win that looked in serious doubt up to around the hour mark, said that many of the mistakes had been anticipated by the coaching staff beforehand.

"It was a first game together and we had a lot of new guys who knew they were getting their one opportunity to stake a claim and they wanted to make the most of it," said De Villiers.

"As a result of that we were perhaps too individualistic, and the players tried too much on their own. This prevented us from getting cohesion and momentum as a team."

Skipper John Smit agreed that it was this aspect that allowed the Namibian Invitational XV, who more resembled a Bulls invitational side both in personnel and in the type of game they played, to get into the game and trouble his team for the first hour.

"I think we got it wrong tactically in the first half, and this allowed the Namibians to play on us and force mistakes," said Smit.

"But as the coach says, there were a lot of young guys wanting to show what they could do. They felt they needed to do something special to catch the eye."

It is true that individuals get less chance to stand out if you adopt the finals/winning rugby pattern, and it does hopefully explain why the South Africans, when pegged into their own half, persisted in trying to run the ball back at their opponents from positions where it would have been far wiser to kick.

Time and again the South Africans were dispossessed, forced into mistakes, and against a team with a better attacking dynamic able to exploit their massive territorial advantage, the shadow Boks could have been in deep trouble.

As it was, a 36-7 win was probably less than many people expected, though you have to acknowledge the role that the Namibians played in the game. De Villiers afterward said he was a bit disappointed with the Namibian attitude, saying that he expected more Namibians to be in the side.

"It was a good show that was put on for the spectators, and I suppose from that point of view the Namibian union got something out of it, but they got nothing out of this game from the viewpoint of preparing Namibia for the next World Cup, which was one of the reasons we agreed to this game," said De Villiers.

He agreed though that the Namibian selection, with former Bulls players being complemented by players from that union's Vodacom Cup team, had probably helped his own side's buildup more than would have been the case had the shadow Boks run riot.

For a start, it showed the Boks the importance of having a kicker capable of being a dominant force in the territory game, something that Earl Rose appeared to some extent to get right when he was moved from fullback to flyhalf later in the match.

And Smit was able afterwards to reflect on perhaps his best work-out yet in preparation for his probable role as a tighthead against the British and Irish Lions.

"He (Kees Lensing) really came at me and tested me, which was great, because that is what I can expect in a couple of weeks from the Lions," said Smit.

"It was also great to get in a full 80 minutes at last. I have not done that since the Sharks played the Stormers (in the first week of the Super 14)."

The scrumming was quite problematic on occasion, but as assistant Gary Gold pointed out afterwards, the scrumming unit will have an entirely different look to it against the Lions. So will the Springbok team, which after last night is a good thing.[/b]

Pretty **** that this game wasn't on tv. <_< -_-
