[RWC2023] South Africa vs Ireland (23/09/2023)

Not the indication you think it is.

Your one OTB thing you heard weeks ago didn't ring true anyway.
It's the best proxy we have. Happy to stand corrected if and when you prove me wrong.

I presented a hypothesis. You claimed the game showed it was false. Show me the evidence then.

Not if SA are in the final with a goal kicker no. #bantertocope
I've seen enough to be confident enough. As confidant as I was going into this match. We need to convert though. First to get past France. A lot of ifs but still very much in it. I'll tell you what, if any team take the ***le from pool B they'd have done it the hard way.

Meters made is not a stat about collisions. Even if it was the best proxy it's still useless for it. Everytime someone runs back a kick that's metres made.

You have been regularly presenting the idea that Ireland would lose the majority of collisions and the simpler gameplan would see SA out execute better.

I don't need to disprove what's already been disproven. Or to engage with someone who pretends to act rational but deletes 75% of my post and doesn't engage beyond 'we'll see after the game'.

We are also missing a trick I think. Wiese just isn't up to it in a Bok jersey imo. Let's start RG Snyman at 8. 😳 Gimme a really good reason why we shouldnt try this.

What are the Maths and outcomes for us to not get out the pool now? We better put a score on Tonga lol

Nicked from elsewhere, not a product of my usual photoshopping skillz

Last time I checked, Ireland was an island consisting of 32 counties. The Republic of Ireland comprises 26, Northern Ireland, 6. The team represents both, and is rightly called Ireland. Any more points to make?

For your information, there are many other sports where Ireland field a united whole-island team, because the relevant sporting associations didn't split after partition. Maybe that's too complicated for you, but it suits me fine. It's better than Welshmen playing for the England cricket team because they don't have a team of their own...

That's not very sound. Can you name one other national team in the World Cup that can consistently field people from two countries/nation-states?

And besides rugby and cricket, could you kindly list those 'many other sports' where Ireland feld a united-island team. Let's make it semi-serious and avoid sports like curling or korfball. Big, wannabe global sports.
Footie? No.
Olympic Games? No.
Doesn't get more global than those two. Hockey maybe? Still.

We can argue whether they representing Ireland as a whole makes sense or not, but they are basically given an option that every other single country doesn't have access to.

Hell of an answer there!
You didnt need to type a response either, yet you voluntarily chose to do so. But when it came to explaining the rationale behind your statement, you suddenly chose not to reply. Conveniently.

It looks as if you're taking this too personally and (hopefully) you know I've got no beef with you, quite the contrary, so I'm gonna let it go. The idea was not to upset you. We clearly saw different things (that's ok) and generally presenting evidence (even when imperfect) is the most logical form of solving those disputes, hence my attempt.

If Ireland win, and it's a big if, there won't be any "premature celebration". This team are in for the long haul. Not a pool stage win.
So lets review the final whistle on this pool match that probably didn't mathematically ensure Ireland reach the QF, arguably doesn't make their route to the final easier and arguably doesn't really make Ireland favourites in any rematch with the Boks:

- walk around the pitch celebration
- Lowe live streaming on the pitch
- post-match singalong with the fans
- Aki's kids running onto the pitch

Hence 'premature celebration'. It was all reminscent of Scotland winning the first match at the 6N and acting like there weren't another four matches to go.

All Ireland learnt here was that they can probably compete for the ***le. A champions response would be to head off the pitch in the standard way, await a dressing down for being out performed for large parts of the second half and mentally shift to preparing for the next match.

Ermm... he did?
Its not easy for some of us to notice minor cosmetic differences between Africans like Faf and Libbok.

I myself have been told I'm the spitting image of Ashley Banjo (?) and the main presenter of Sunday Brunch (strange but true), so blindness may be a wider Scottish trait.

Getting this started as I'm seeing discussions happening in a couple of the other game threads on this, and thought it best to try get the conversations consolidated into one place.
I all. I have five category two tickets for the QF on Sunday the 15th. Looking for a straight swap for five tickets on the Saturday the 14th. Please let me know if you have anything

Aren't 3 of those absolutely bog standard after just about any win?
Singalong with the fans - that's more down to the stadium picking exactly the right song to play in that situation - huge in France, huge in Ireland
Ermm, I must have missed those three in England vs Chile.

It looks as if you're taking this too personally and (hopefully) you know I've got no beef with you,
As an onlooker who is not overly motivated about who made more metres or what it may or may not mean, he is not the one who appears to be taking this too personally.

Meh, standard for a big test match to be honest. I don't see this team getting carried away off the back of that, it was a monumental effort but really lacked accuracy at times. We scored zero points off 4 five metre lineouts and a 40m Keenan break to the line. That's really bad EV right there.

Cracking game, back to business as usual v Scotland and go from there.

My head is monumentally sore

Is the Irish winger (11) (not Hansen) an ex Gaelic footy player? He kicks like an AFL player does. Nice boot on him.
Lowe? I doubt he'd ever heard of the sport until he moved to Ireland in his 20s
Apparently he used to play basketball in NZ, but I don't think that has that much carry over
