[RWC2023] England vs Chile (23/09/2023)

No complaints from me. Eminently sensible.

The Jack Walker sweepstake…..

I'm going for 12 minutes.

When did Marcus Smith get 26 caps?? He's been in the England set up and playing a lot longer than I think - and than everyone acts half the time.

Starting
15. Marcus Smith (Harlequins, 26 caps)
14. Henry Arundell (Racing 92, 8 caps)
13. Elliot Daly (Saracens, 61 caps)
12. Ollie Lawrence (Bath Rugby, 16 caps)
11. Max Malins (Bristol Bears, 21 caps)
10. Owen Farrell – captain (Saracens, 107 caps)
9. Danny Care (Harlequins, 91 caps)
1. Bevan Rodd (Sale Sharks, 3 caps)
2. Theo Dan (Saracens, 5 caps)
3. Kyle Sinckler (Bristol Bears, 64 caps)
4. David Ribbans (Toulon, 8 caps)
5. George Martin (Leicester Tigers, 5 caps)
6. Lewis Ludlam (Northampton Saints, 23 caps)
7. Jack Willis (Toulouse, 13 caps)
8. Billy Vunipola (Saracens, 71 caps)
Replacements
16. Jack Walker (Harlequins, 4 caps)
17. Joe Marler (Harlequins, 84 caps)
18. Will Stuart (Bath Rugby, 31 caps)
19. Ollie Chessum (Leicester Tigers, 13 caps)
20. Ben Earl (Saracens, 20 caps)
21. Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers, 125 caps)
22. George Ford – vice captain (Sale Sharks, 87 caps)
23. Joe Marchant (Stade Francais, 21 caps)

Times was right.

Walker has more caps than minutes, amazed he's there tbh.

Surprised Marcus Smith already has that many caps.

One thing gets me about this team, it means there is next to zero chance of Smith playing 10.

Assumed he'd get a run out at 10 or have no 10 on the bench and have him as on field cover.

I wonder if SB is trying to make Smith into a BB/DMac style 10/15 for the future? Worse ideas if he's good there as long as he is seen as a 10 first when Ford Faz go? As i doubt they'll both stay for long post WC.

And thinking about it he did this at tigers with Burns/Atkinson...and we know what Burns did in the final.

Overall not sold but hope it works and think he does have the skills just does he have the fundermentals in defence and positioning? Also id rather see Smith 10 Arundell 15 and Faz 22.

That's potentially a very physical pack back 5. Let's see if they perform like that

I like that Smith is getting a shot at 15. I hate that Ford never got a chance to play with Smith from kick off. There were definite signs that combo could make England joint best with Fiji and Wales in this half of the draw.

A lot of people elsewhere expecting a really heavy Chilean loss, but their pack is really quite decent, so I don't think they'll collapse. I also don't have the same confidence in a Farrell / Smith combination.

England 41 - 9 Chile

Not sure of Flats as the main presenter. Better as a pundit.

Go England! Already a fan (although tougher to be one these past few years); however, anybody but Chile. Knocked US out of Americas 2 qualifier by one f***ing point, after getting gift Covid-19 forfeit vs Columbia. Sour grapes? Yes.

don't ruin our narrative, only the English support England.
Back and getting fired up. Hope you're ready. First international game I ever saw was England - Scotland at Twickenham some time around 1978-9. Dates have become fuzzy. Electric atmosphere. Both sides in full song. Couldn't understand a word of it. Loved every minute.

Sounds good, I have to confess that was almost a decade before I was born. hoping for something a little more polished today than we have seen recently in terms of phase play and attack that doesn't rely solely on opposition error.
