[RWC2023] England vs Argentina (09/09/2023)

I feel for Ludlam, during the warm ups he seemed like the only back rower who played like he wanted to win

I overall like the look of the team and squad. Notable exception being Cole, but as others have said, it speaks volumes to our lack of depth in that position.

Funny Mitchell is starting when he wasn't originally in the squad!

Been saying I hope SB has been playing some kind of rope a dope and luring everyone into a false sense of security. It is the only thing that has given me hope after the 6 nations and World Cup warm ups!

edit. Just saw May is starting as well!

Has Stuart

Has Stuart been shaky at international level? Whenever I have seen him I have been impressed. He never goes backwards in the scrum and he has a knack of scoring tries as well.
Really rough test against south africa but for the most part he has been the pick of the bunch yeah, probably an unfair assesement.

Starting two players you originally dropped over players that were kept is very funny tbh. I wonder at what point steve realised he had ****** it.

It would trigger some serious conversations in any performing panel. If the passed over players aren't throwing their hands up in the air, morale must be on the floor.

Tbf to dan cole, he has been one of the better domestic props past couple of years. Most other positions players being left out for past its infuriates me, but it really highlights a flaw in the english game in developing props. When I go back and think, who would I pick in the props that isnt there? Well I like to pick players on form and that can offer at least one thing to a high level, only two really stand out there Simon McIntyre and val rapava ruskin. Both guys in their 30's without test match experience.

So I can sort of see where Coles comes in, not horrible form, solid in the scrum and has been there at international level. Probably the one positions I will put my hands up and say the player pool is thin, especially considering our two not ancient guys in sinckler and genge have hardly been amazing at domestic level either, and our other one in stuart has been shaky at international level.

Really think we need more A tours to get domestic props some games at international level to build any depth, see how they go against other oposition.

EDIT: Forgot about obano and schonert, another two excelent at domestic level but relativley untested at high levels or coming of injuries.

Key word being domestic. He's looked of his time back in an Eng shirt.

This can only mean that Sinckler's injury was worse than let on. If Cole has to play he has to start, he just ain't bench material. (And pls don't even try to throw Leonard in 03 back at me…..).

You remember Leonard back in 03…

Perhaps less so so with May given the paucity of specialist wing options and that he was once one of the very best. Apparently Borthwick told him fairly early doors that he wouldn't be selected - honest, but not exactly motivational or keeping options open.

But Mitchell just looks like a panic move. Two very experienced players will have noses put right out of joint. And it's not like Mitchell's a 19 year old Gareth Edwards in the making. He's 26 and as far as I can see his only start was the Fiji fiasco. Not that Care or Youngs had made a compelling case though.

Potentially unpopular opinion but I like a few steady Eddie's off the bench. Up until his uptick in form in the last 18 months I always wanted POM as a permanent in the 20 jersey and I'm the same with Murray for 21. Could definitely see guys like Cole and Youngs fulfilling that role.

Helps to be a team that is usually winning though, England more often than not need to change the pace these days. But that's a problem a lot bigger than the bench options.

If we keep to within 10 points then still manage to qualify as group runners up I will take it as a win.

Coventry play Sarries Saturday. Taking my daughter with me and going for a meal after. Don't care at this moment if England win or not and that's kinda sad

Just breathe in that blokes direction and he'll headbut a baby
You'd think that will be on his mind and he'll be on his best behaviour. I can't really remember the red card last time. I think it was a high shot on Farrell with Lavanini running out of the defensive line pretty fast. For all the grief OF gets he was also petty good at getting people sent off too.

It's classed as England as the home side so I expect white.
If they are "home" then England change the same way they did against Fiji .

It's strange we call them away shirts when they're only ever worn at home. Scotland, France and Italy know this well.
