Can't figure out whom I exactly want to win.

On the one hand, we want to see Russia improve and get a good result.

On the other an Italian loss won't do their development any good.

Which result would be best rugby wise?

31 - 0 to Italy after 30 minutes; five tries scored by Italy.

31-0 after 25 minutes.

Good try from Parisse, caught in the gap by Bocchino, then Toniolatti on the right corner; then Parisse again straightned after a
Russian kick, offloading for Toniolatti who scores again. Benvenuti scored after a loose high ball and now penalty try for repeating infringements at scrum.

Russia is now trying something, but Ongaro did a silly foul tackling a man without the ball, and he's been sin binned!

Unfortunately yes Italy are miles ahead of Russia so I think everyone expected a one sided affair. If Russia put more into Rugby I think they could become a good side in the future.

Don't think Italy will be happy conceding 3 tries to Russia.

I doubt it as well. Russia should be proud of their performance today, though.

As for Italy, while they might have some points to talk about in conceding 3 tries to Russia, they got what they came for: a bonus point win. They have that in the bank and can move on to prepare for their remaining two matches.

Good on Russia getting three tries - gutted they couldn't get the 4th though, I feel for the guy who kicked it out on the full, he looked gutted when it went out

Good result for Italy though, despite leaking the tries - Can't wait for their match vs Ireland

Thoroughly enjoyed watching the might of the Italians vs the toil of the outgunned Russians. Russia can build on this and have a promising future in World rugby

Yes of course, but we have 3 matches in 12 days, so a soft defence in some situation today is not so worrying. But it's not good...
Anyway I'm quite happy, we showed we can beat well a weaker side, this didn't happen for example in 2007!

Now USA, 4 tries, and showdown against Ireland! Do or die, and let's see if we'd deserve the QF!

How did russia play in general? there tries looked good but was that just a lack of defense?
Also say Ireland lose to Italy (assuming we beat the bears) who then qualifies form the group?

Russia's first was good.
The other 2 came from 2 individual errors: Pratichetti tried to intercept russian last pass, and he opened a space for russian wing who literally burned McLean. Russian final try Toniolatti was still on the ground brawling with a russian player.

RWC rules for advancing after pool stages:

If at the completion of the pool phase two or more teams are level on match points, then the following criteria shall be used in the following order until one of the Teams can be determined as the higher ranked:
The winner of the match in which the two tied teams have played each other shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has the best difference between points scored for and points scored against in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has the best difference between tries scored for and tries scored against in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has scored most points in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has scored most tries in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
Should the tie be unresolved at the conclusion of steps 1 through 5, the team that is higher ranked in the updated Official IRB World Rankings on October 3, 2011.

Italy must arrive at october 2nd with 10 points, so Ireland should be at 13: in this case, if we beat Ireland, even if they take the bp, we will advance anyway.
But if we fail to take 1bp against USA, we would be at 9, and we must win, without Ireland taking any bp (<7pt or 4 tries)....

I can't see Italy beat Ireland by more than 7 points

I'm a bit disappointed by Italy's performance in defense, but considering the line-out, the result was not so bad. Anyways... from the nature of game, it would be more logical if Italians would add couple more tries

Man, Russia was maimed at scrum time.

Their lineout was 50 - 50.

Would have preferred it if they continued to hit it up with their big man.. Especially their number 6.. he was Awesome! He was MOTM was he not?
But dont run it with their Locks.. Hopeless!

Also.. Backs.. Just throw it to the wingers... The centers knocked the ball on a few times.

kovana - sorry, I meant line-ups :) mistakenly wrote line-outs.
I meant that Italy's squad was far from perfect in this game and in addition they went on the pitch with feeling that they already accomplished what they needed in the first half.

Yes, Grachov is very good. His strength is in his huge experience. I believe he's more than 35 years old by now and has been in Russian team for a long time. Played some good games. He's always trouble.

The substitute 9 was really good as well on Russian side. Made a try and few really good runs... was quick as hell.
