[RWC 2023 Final] New Zealand v South Africa 28/10/23 20:00 BST

NZ first to 3 wins.
NZ first to defend t-i-t-l-e.

South Africa second to 3 wins.
South Africa second to defend t-i-t-l-e.

That's how I see it.

NZ and South Africa are inseparable.

2012 U20 WC. Pollard as an 18 year old, and many other stars (Kriel, PSDT, Kitshoff, Kolbe). Lost to Ireland in the group stage. Made a comeback to beat NZ in final and win...

I don't recall a final with such lack of interest from media and fans here in Europe. Kind of bummer really. I'd say this would cup has been a failure in general, poor organization, poor referees, poor official highlights, poor general interest from non rugby fans.

Hopefully an exciting final can lift it up a bit

I generally agree, I personally have never been less invested in the last two weekends (despite my team in the SF), but...
As a world cup, it's had what, 4 of the top 10 RWC matches ever, more bums on seats than any RWC ever, and more eyeballs on screens than any RWC ever.

I'm not convinced it's doing that badly amongst the casual fans.

Personally still prefer 6-2 but then again if we somehow make it, it will look like a masterstroke even if I don't want to see it ever again.

The bench will be extended to 9 players, leading to teams going with 6-3, and the Springboks going 7-2, and 8-1 against the All Blacks.

Siya Kolisi is a legend already but winning world cup twice as captain is something else

I have a lot of respect for these two great teams.
But because I am petty, and because South Africa are single-handedly responsible for most of England's RWC heartbreaks during my adult life, I would like New Zealand to win.
That's not the only reason to be fair - I also love watching them play when they're at their best and I do think it will be good for the game, even if it's just optics with casual fans, for NZ to bring it home.
That said, I in no way get behind the bashing of how SA play, I think it's dumb and there are many different ways to play the game.

We did that against Argentiba - we played the last 6 minutes with 14 and had 9 on the bench LOL!!

The best analysis I've heard so far came from a New Zealand rugby podcast where they said their brains couldn't actually imagine sam cane lifting the trophy. I think kolisi playing 40 minutes on one leg will make the emotional difference.

"Has anyone noticed the only times the 7-1 split was played by SA was against AB's and Ireland. SA tested it out against both of them knowing that they might face any of them again in the final. What a move."

Interesting.

Not really.

2 games in which they didn't have to do a backline reshuffle.

One of them they lost anyway... and would have lost as their 10 was losing the plot off the kicking tee and they would have had no replacement available. Unless your swapping out Le Roux at 23 for Pollard?

Only a matter of time before this 7-1 thing catches up. Hopefully this evening as continuing down the road of a collisions based gameplan isn't good for the sport.

Jean Kleyn going down in the record books as the first Irishman to ever play in a RWC final.

I take the point.

That said, I'm sure there was nothing Irish about Sean Brian Thomas Fitzpatrick, son of Brian Bernard James Fitzpatrick :D

Dunno when exactly they moved to NZ, was before Brian's time, but no feckin way is there not significant green blood there!
