There were approximately 50,000 registered players in Argentina in 2010, though I don't know what the breakdown is. From the gist of the articles, many of these players are youth players in school and college clubs and about 1/5 of the total is in Buenos Aires[1][2]
They seem to have a fairly established youth system.
