hi guys my name tom i actually play rugby for national two level in england. i am very intrested and see lot of rugby in romania and watch super liga in romania. there lot of talent out there and also in second division. just very curious i watch romania v leeds and i have admit how poor it was where do you think if romania come bottom of group will it be success or not? i find intresting and watching rugby in romania lot of there are new zealand and australian. i am curious to find why from south hemishphere is popular? and watching couple of friday why there in the national side couple look out of pace and way off mark? anyway i am routing for romania and the success i was adopted from there and i hope they will not come bottom i would be disapointed if they did wonder what you guys would think?

Nobody cares about warm ups in the end. It wasn't even a proper game with nearly 60 players taking part from both sides. It was just a training run, nothing to be read any more into it until they play a proper game. Also it's obvious if they finish bottom of the group it wouldn't be a success.

fair if that what you think. personally warm up games are taken serious espically with england so dont see why people dont care about them but if that with romania then that fair.

Those England type warm up are basically there partly for money to replace November tests, and Sky are hyping the heck out of them. In reality by the time the World Cup starts nobody will care a jot about them. England soon forgot about a record breaking win over a **** Wales 3rd XV in 2007 when they lost 36-0 to South Africa. They don't mean all that much in terms of World Cup performance. Just pre season games following a period where most sides have focused on fitness, and coaches will use them to trim down their squad.

Also I would add that Romania game you reference wasn't even really at all that comparable to the England game. In the England game they played 23 man squads for a capped test match and it was more of a proper game. Romania played a game where they used 31 players (several of which won't even make the final squad anyway), they didn't even wear their proper yellow official kit for the match and wore just some blue training shirts, so it was clearly more of a training ground session, with the entire team changing back and forth with substitutes. That's very different from what that England vs France match was.

Results for these teams are a terrible indicator of form anyway. In 2011, Romania barely played any warm ups, and the one they did against Perigueux, a French third division side they lost 20-7 again playing it as a training session with 30 odd players participating IIRC. In their next match they were not far off one of the biggest shocks of the World Cup. So it's a very poor indicator, especially with matches played in this manner, so I would ignore it until they play a proper match later on.

Hey Tom, nice to see more Oaks supporters in here. Of course it will be a failure if Romania finishes bottom in the group, hopefully we will get at least one win.

Not a meaningful match and many of the players who started where still fighting for a place in the team. Also some were very young (e.g. fullback is 19yo).

However, this is WR idea of developing the game, England get France to warm-up, Romania get Yorkshire.

thanx for reply Dragos. yes i think it is very unfair. i have watch some rugby in romania this season it be intresting lot of australians and new zealand. just wanted to no reasons behind why some been selected for world cup. i think romania can even beat itlay i think that be massive result and it will question the six nations as one team goes up and one teams goes down be good espically for developing these 2nd tier countries. lot of talent romania i am still a player playing in england but always in the summer i go an watch it is very intresting for sure.

Some bits from a very interesting interview with Oaks manager Horatiu Bargaunas posted on FRR's Youtube page:
- Marius Sirbe missed the RWC because he was without a club for some months. He is now training with an Italian one (L'Aquila Rugby) but hasn't signed with them yet.
- Alin Coste was injured and chose to recover at the club.
- Catalin Fercu will stay at the Saracens and has a chance to break into the first team next season.
- the team that went to Scotland is not the final one. The two matches will be used as final tests for some fringe players that compete for spots.
- the FRR has been in talks with the French union for some time to schedule one test every year between the two nations. For that to happen, the Oaks have to be competitive in the direct match at the RWC, so the staff will try to target that game.

The FRR Youtube has been very active, here is a clip from the training at Cheile Gradistei:

Just missing the game in Scotland or just dropping out of the Romanian team completely for the rest of year? He played from the bench last Friday so would seem strange to drop out at this stage.

Neither, based on the Bargaunas interview. "Stay at Saracens" seemed not to mean "he had to choose club over national team", but rather "he'll stay one more season at Sarries", given that Strettle apparently moves to France (=the "chance to break into the first team")

Ah, okay, thanks. Worried there for a second.

Here are the Oaks starters against Edinburgh tomorrow (the reserves were not announced but I guess the entire squad will be used):
1. Mihaita Lazar
2. Eugen Capatana
3. Horatiu Pungea
4. Johannes Van Heerden
5. Marian Drenceanu
6. Randall Morrison
7. Ovidiu Tonita
8. Stelian Burcea
9. Florin Surugiu
10. Michael Wiringi
11. Ionut Botezatu
12. Paula Kinikinilau
13. Florin Vlaicu
14. Florin Ionita
15. Sabin Stratila

Many new names compared to the previous match but it's interesting that Morrison and Stratila start again. Several key players (Fercu, Popirlan, Macovei, the best hookers, etc) will be on the bench.

Edinburgh will use:
15 Nick McLennan
14 Jamie Farndale
13 Chris Dean
12 Andries Strauss
11 Tom Brown
10 Phil Burleigh
9 Nathan Fowles
1 Grant Shiells
2 Neil Cochrane
3 John Andress
4 Anton Bresler
5 Fraser McKenzie
6 Jamie Ritchie
7 Roddy Grant (c)
8 Cornell Du Preez

Subs
16 James Hilterbrand
17 George Turner
18 Jack Cosgrove / Allan Dell
19 Simon Berghan
20 Alex Toolis
21 Magnus Bradbury
22 Murdo McAndrew
23 Jade Te Rure
24 Sam Beard
25 James Johnstone
26 Otulea Katoa
27 Jack Cuthbert

Some good players there. Good to see Jamie Richie, Jamie Farndale and Chris Dean get a chance. They are one off our young prospects who i think can make good happen for Scotland near future. On the bench Magnus Bradbury and James Johnstone i'm happy to see get a chance. Would be interesting to see what Murdo McAndrew can pull off.

Overall pretty happy with our team lets hope for a good match.

Romania lost against Edinburgh 31-16, here are the highlights (full match is also available on FRR's Youtube page):

A poor result but the match was only used to select the final RWC squad. Hopefully there were no injuries and some lessons have been learned. Lynn Howells should now announce the final squad in a few days.

In other news, Dinamo prop Teodor Bors has been arrested for 30 days for selling weed. Too bad, he was a promising young player.

A few very strange choices made by Lynn Howells. A number of good players are out of the squad (Pristavita, Dascalu, Vlad Nistor, Ionut Dumitru, Sirbe, Manole, etc). Others who have barely played lately for the national team are included (Tonita, Carpo, Lemnaru) and even some who are reserves at their Superliga clubs (Bratu, Stratila). But the Welshman was almost always right with his surprising selections so far, there must be some solid reasons for his choices.

Indeed, some very strange choices there. I can say I am a bit disappointed.

I can't see why decent backs like Manole or Dascalu are missing from a World Cup selections and players with limited potential (Apostol), who did not played last years (Carpo), too young for such a contest (Stratila) are in the squad or reserves ar their clubs (Bratu) are in the squad.

Some bad news from the Oaks camp:
- the mother of lock Johannes van Heerden has passed away. The player went to South Africa and might return before the test vs Tonga.
- another lock, Marius Antonescu, played for his Pro D2 club (Tarbes) this weekend. Hopefully this is just a deal between FRR and the club. The Romanian RWC squad is already thin on locks (only 3 named, I guess V. Ursache can also play there if needed) so the tragedy in Van Heerden's family and the club issues of Antonescu can really disrupt the team.

In other news, the Romanian and Tongan unions have agreed to donate all the gate revenues from the test match on September 5 to Sione Vaiomounga and his family. The former Tongan international was playing for Romanian club Baia Mare last season when he for forced to quit rugby because of a life-threatening kidney failure. The club offered him a job as a junior coach in order to allow him to stay in Romania to continue his treatment (apparently dialysis is not available in Tonga). The money will be used to pay the medical bills (he needs a kidney transplant) and to allow Sione's family to come visit him in Romania.

Hopefully, the match with Tonga will prove that the Oaks are on the right track. Both them and the fans need a morale boost ahead of the WC

King's Cup semifinals:
Saracens Timisoara - U Cluj 52-10
Baia Mare - CSM Bucuresti 29-27
Dinamo - Steaua 13-12 (this match was played only to determine the final ranking)

The final between Timisoara and Baia Mare will be played in Bucharest on September 12.

It's worth noting that CSM Bucuresti had some serious financial issues and were close to bankrupcy. They managed to stay afloat but lost 16 players (most of their foreigners) and had several other players away at the national team or injured. A pretty good result for them against Baia Mare, their coach accused the referee decisions at the end (apparently Baia Mare scored the decisive try in a dramatic ending, after 9 minutes of extra time) but since the ref awarded two penalty tries to CSM I doubt he was that biased against them.
