Romanian Rugby

I know a guy who plays for Viadana (the former Aironi) and he says his club is professional as well. I suspect Mogliano could also be pro.

Viadana had some financial problems and so most of its players had to find a job to sustain themselves,so they can't be considered professional players, most of Mogliano players work too,so no fully professional players in this case too

I doubt that clubs that receive a significant amount from the Union to play in Europe (3-400000k EUR if I remember right) can't afford to pay their players who have to take other jobs but whatever.

Back to Romanian rugby news:
- the FRR has decided not to suspend the 9 players from RCM Timisoara who refused to play for the Bucharest Wolves, considering that it was not the players' fault (they wanted to play for the Wolves but the club didn't allow them to do so). The club got away with only an official warning (a lenient punishment that hopefully means the club and the union will end this stupid dispute). However, head coach Grainger Heikell was suspended for 8 months because he accused FRR of corruption both in the local press and in an email sent to the IRB.
- Superliga club U Cluj (5th this season) has signed a 5-year sponsorship contract with local spirits producer Prodvinalco and as part of the deal the club will change their name to include the company. U Prodvilanco Cluj aims for the 3rd place next season and will try to sign a number of high-profile players.
- last season, Serbian club Partizan Belgrade was allowed to play in the Romanian U16 league. The new season begins this weekend and Hungarian club Magjarok Esztergom will also play in the league, along Romanian clubs and the Serbians. This is part of the efforts of the FRR to grow rugby in the nearby nations and I hope it's only the beginning, in time they could play in the other youth leagues and eventually at senior level as well. If they become strong enough and have the needed funds, it would be great if one day clubs or franchises from Serbia and Hungary (but also Moldova, Bulgaria or Ukraine) could play in the Superliga.

Most of teams who get the European Cups bonus from italian union use those money to pay debts, indeed Prato (to make an example) risked to go on bankrupt and disappear because they failed to qualify for european cups and didn't get the bonus and there is the risk they quit the league during the season,l'Aquila has heavy economic problems since 4 years and risk to quit too

I highly doubt this will stop here. Dinu, Timisoara's owner seem to have started a personal war with one person from Federation and does not show any sign he'll stop. Anyway, I think this may be the end of Bucharest Wolves since from next year will become problematic to send such selection team in European cups:
http://www.rugbyeurope.eu/article-655.htm

True, is only about third tier but shouldn't this competition be used to qualify two teams for Challenge Cup? In this case it will be hard to replace the Wolves' role of training players for Oaks in much more strong games than Superliga ones.

Dinu should solve his personal war without hurting the national team and Romanian rugby.

It was known for some time that select sides won't be allowed to play in Europe from next season. I don't think it's a problem, we should try to get as many clubs in there. With the money spent now on the Wolves, FRR could easily fund a Romania A team that could play some matches in the meantime to train and test the players from clubs that don't qualify for European competitions.

The three tests of the Oaks in November will be broadcasted live on TVR, the starting times have been announced:
- November 8, 18.30 local time, Romania vs USA (TVR2)
- November 15, 16.00 local time, Romania vs Japan (TVR1)
- November 22, 18.30 local time, Romania vs Canada (TVR2)

Very curious about this but I guess the names will not be revealed until January. CSM Bucuresti managed a surprising win over Farul Constanta in the Cup this weekend. Baia Mare also won (again) against Timisoara in the Cup.

Great to read a forum dedicated to Romanian rugby.I followed Romania at the RWC2011 here in NZ, met a few dedicated Oaks fans and have followed them ever since.
My Romanian friend is a big Timisoara fan so it is interesting to see what is happening at the club.

Do you know what has happened to Neil Kelly after he was sacked by Farul? Why was he sacked when Farul went on to reach the final?

I don't really know why he was sacked... But now he is the new headcoach of Chile national team

Neil Kelly is defence coach for Romania:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Kelly

He was sacked because he failed the objective to qualify directly into playoffs and play the semifinal on own field and because of the low quality of Farul's play. It was more visible a better play with new coach. I suspect it wasn't a chemistry between him and players...

Paul Healy was CSM Bucuresti coach, now Chile NT coach and he was sacked because he failed to finish regular season in first 3 places.

Kind of rushed decisions tbh.

No worries :) I liked Healy a lot, I liked the players he signed, club should have been more patient with him.

There are a few interesting names in the Wolves squad, I did not expect to see Agiacai, Paul Ailenei (I hoped his brother would make the squad), Sean Morrell (I thought he was injured) and Jantjies.

Some other news:
- winger Stephen Hihetah was fied by Baia Mare for undisclosed disciplinary reasons
- centre Csaba Gal wants to play for U Cluj in order to return to his native town

Really interesting article.
I see the coach is honest and realistic about the Wolves.

Two wins at the World Cup is achievable, with luck. Canada and Italy are beatable if the team play to their strengths.
Much will depend on how the matches with France and Ireland go.
At the last World Cup the opening match v Scotland was the best chance for a win and after that match Romania did not play anywhere near as well in the other matches.
Lots to look forward to!

Wow, this is probably the weakest Wolves lineup ever. Not only the 9 Timisoara players are missing but many of the other best players are either missing completely (Lucaci, Morrell, Van Heerden, Tamba, Turashvili, Tatu, Rusu) or are starting on the bench (Vlaicu, Mitu). Most of the forwards are either very young or inexperienced at international level and I really don't understand why Jantjies is the starting number 10 (unless all of the other Superliga fly halves are injured or something). Hopefully this will not be a very heavy defeat for the Wolves but I guess we have nothing to lose anyway and at least Howells will get to test many fringe players against a good opponent.
