Edinburgh Rugby's 'Flying Dutchman' Tim Visser has winged his way into the RaboDirect PRO12 Dream Team for the third year in a row

http://www.rabodirectpro12.com/news/13957.phpVisser, who qualifies to play for Scotland this summer, is once again the leading try scorer in the RaboDirect PRO12 and has bagged 36 tries in 56 appearances for Edinburgh up to Round 22 of the 2011/12 campaign this weekend.

That total has worked him into third place in the PRO12 all-time try scoring list level with Nikki Walker and just behind Shane Horgan (39) and Tommy Bowe (46). He picked up 15 out of a possible 28 votes for the two wing positions, with his nearest rivals way back on four.

There are five players in the 2011/12 Dream Team who have retained their place from the previous year. A panel of 14 journalists from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales were canvassed to select the team after 19 rounds of the tournament and four of the returning players were in the back line.

Leinster's utility back Isa Nacewa once again won the full back shirt, beating off the strong challenge of Glasgow Warriors rising star Stuart Hogg, while Ruan Pienaar was the overwhelming choice at scrum half with 10 of the 14 votes.

Cardiff Blues centre Casey Laulala was the other player to make it two in a row as he won the race to join the Ospreys' Ashley Beck (8 votes) at centre. His Blues team mate, Wales Grand Slam wing Alex Cuthbert, took the left wing spot on try count over Munster's Simon Zebo.

It was also tight at outside half, where Glasgow Warriors' Duncan Weir just pipped Leinster's Ian Madigan for the No 10 jersey after both players received four votes. In the end, Weir's superior scoring record earned him the half-back berth alongside Pienaar.

Only one forward survived from the 2010/11 Dream Team, Leinster hooker Richardt Strauss. He polled eight votes with the Ospreys' Richard Hibbard his nearest rival with three.

There was another close call at loose head prop, where Glasgow's Jon Welsh and Leinster's Heinke van der Merwe were locked on three votes each. In the end, the decision went to Welsh on the basis he had scored three tries to Van der Merwe's one.

Munster's BJ Botha beat off the challenge of Ospreys' Adam Jones and Ulster's John Afoa to complete the front row as the tight head choice. There were 15 different players put forward for the two second row positions, but Ulster's Dan Tuohy and Glasgow's Tom Ryder were the clear favourites over some illustrious candidates.

Tuohy topped the poll with six votes, while Ryder had four, and their elevation into the Dream Team was a reflection on their reliability and durability at the heart of their respective packs over the season.

The back row comprises three players who failed to make their nation's World Cup squads, yet all featured in the RBS 6 Nations. Edinburgh's Dave Denton took the blindside flanker position ahead of nine other candidates, while new England No 8 Ben Morgan, of the Scarlets, crowned his great season by polling twice as many votes as his nearest rival.

The No 7 jersey went to the Ospreys outstanding openside flanker Justin Tipuric, who received the third highest number of votes of any player - Visser 15, Pienaar 10 - with nine to leave the 2011 nominee, Sam Warburton, trailing in his wake.

No fewer than 89 players from all 12 clubs in the RaboDirect PRO12 received votes and the final make up of the team is as follows:

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the sight of that team.

Needless to say that team would be absolutely wrecked by a team made up of the league's top players.

Goes to show why "dream teams" selected by either the experts - or worse fan polls - should be treated with the contempt they deserve.

Beck, Cuthbert, and Tipuric I can agree with.
That pack, oh that pack...

yes, I don't know how Jon Welsh and BJ Botha got in this team, it's obvious that the Ospreys have the best scrum in the league with Adam Jones in it, and also Afoa has been immense

also I think Leinster should have a bit more representation in this team, Devin Toner has had a great season, as has Madigan

Needless to say that team would be absolutely wrecked by a team made up of the league's top players.

the league's top players, such as Sexton (6 matches), Kearney (5 matches), Jenkins (3 matches), Ferris (4 matches), O'Driscoll (3 matches), Warburton (2 matches) have hardly played so they can't really be put forward for the team of the RaboPro12, but as you say a team made up of those players would beat this side

so who can select a "dream team" that shouldn't be "treated with contempt" then? ;)

It's not the team I'd pick, but tight five and Laulala (Who's hardly been firing on all cylanders this season) aside, I can't moan too much to be honest, going on league form rather than international or HC performances.

Cuthbert really one of the top 2 wings in the league?
Granted I've only watched a handful of Blues games but he's been fairly gash in the lot (mainly post-6N).

Edit: After reading all the guff did they choose wings on number of tries scored? Suppose that makes sense for him to be there then.

Visser and Cuthbert were the two top try scorers in the league this season. Therefore, I say they deserve their place in a team of the season. If you were compiling a 'Best of the Pro12' team, however, Cuthbert would be nowhere near.

you're right about him being fairly gash for the Blues at times, I personally wouldn't have him as one of the top two wingers in the league, but I reckon getting a hat trick very recently against Edinburgh reserves (who had some shockingly bad tackling by a certain Chris Paterson) probably swung a few votes his way

for the second point, they seperated Cuthbert and Zebo who had equal votes by the panel by tries scored, and did the same for Madigan and Weir with points scored

The team is a reminder of the failures of the league. With no relegation systems teams are under no threat and so many don´t take it seriously. Five years ago it was only really the Irish sides doing this. Today it is essentially all of them. Glasgow is the only team regularly fielding its strongest XV or close to it. The league, as a result, is not what it should be and the crowds are not good at all. Getting Ulster vs Edinburgh to attract a crowd like that from the HEC Semi in Dublin is simply never going to happen for a Celtic-Italian League Semi Final.

Just look at the number of foreigners in this dream XV..... many play for the clubs to rest the clubs first choice players for the SIx Nations and Heineken Cup.

Edinburgh.. Heineken Cup Semi Finalists.... 11th in the Rabo Direct Pro 12.

Connacht and the Dragons normally play their strongest XV or close to it ... but neither are just very good

Absolutely.....Both produce great players who get signed by the bigger clubs.

I was surprized to see Ryan Jones is from Newport.

Ye but that's where Ryan Jones associations with Newport ends. He was a later developer to rugby whilst he was in Neath College, was then picked up by the Celtic Warriors before signing for the Ospreys.

Ryan has always seemed a bit resentful of Newport RFC, perhaps he felt they didn't give him a chance before releasing him.
Bassaleg lad originally.

Connacht don't produce many great players, they mainly just sign Leinster/Munster rejects and give them some game time, and if they do well like Reddan, Cronin or Carr for example, one of the big two provinces will take them back, although they would also sign any of their homegrown players too

it is also debatable whether the Dragons really produce that much either although they do produce more than Connacht, they have Lydiate, Faletau, Charteris, and previously Michael Owen, but there are few other experienced Welsh internationals I can think of who they produced

I don't think Ryan Jones ever went through the Newport system

He switched to rugby to football at 17 (playing for Neath, Bridgend, et al), he played for Risca RFC as a nipper before going to football.

Nobody claiming him, just clarifying his career.
