RaboDirect Pro 12 - Leinster vs Ospreys - 23/03/2012

Ospreys are so crap in attack, the tight five's the only thing keeping us in the game

Beck again. Has Hibbard scored? Don't think so, but Leinster won't want a scrum here considering the last two scrums!

Well that's a great result for the O's. Ospreys bench probably won them the game, especially Adam Jones and Bevington. They came on and completely destroyed the Leinster scrum, although that nasty looking injury to Hagan didn't help.

In what way?

Nice victory by Ospreys there. Deserved it on the strength of their second half.

Who was the Beeb motm? Dan Biggar got it on the Irish tele-box.

Leinster went downhill when BOD left the pitch. Proof that they're a one mad team that have been relying on him all season to carry the team.

Took their chances more than anything, the tight 5 are still carrying the team. The only sparks in the backline are Beck and Dirksen, the rest are pretty useless.

Urrrmmmm .... did you watch the second half? First half they were pants.

Yeh thought the O's were decent in the second half. They struggled a little at the breakdown, especially when Tips was in the bin. That limited their offensive options, but their only real chances both resulted in try's.

The wind played a big part, with both teams struggling playing into the wind (the O's in the first half, Leinster in the second).

Yeh, I do agree with that somewhat. Particularly disappointed with Eli Walker. He's been making quite a few errors recently. He's gotta step it up.

Disgusted! How the ref allowed contested scrums to continue with 2 looseheads on the pitch for Leinster I do not know. Lost the game for us effectively!

Beyond that Leinster werent much good bar O'Driscoll and McFadden. Auva'a and Nacewa handed the Ospreys their first tries thru awful defending. Every1 was dropping the ball for fun. This is probably the aftermath of irelands 6 nations disaster. Hopefully the stench of Ireland will wash off Leinster before we have to play Cardiff in 2 weeks.

Fitzgibbon was shocking! Got in the way of a tackle twice and only wanted to penalise the osprey's at the breakdown. I still don't see the reason why the Pro 12 can't get neutral refs.

That's an interesting one. But I don't think it matters. In the eyes of the law, a prop's a prop. If there's a looshead on the bench at international level and the tighthead goes off, the scrums don't become uncontested. That'd be too easy a way out for Austrailia otherwise :p.

The point of having a full front row on the bench is to reduce the possibility of uncontested scrums, not to have specialist tighthead and looshead's.

Edit. Take for instance the Ospreys 4 props on duty tonight. Paul James, Jarvis, Bevington and Adam Jones. 3 out of 4 can play tighthead, so if the O's lost two tightheads, they could still continue, and rightly so. There can't be different rules for different teams, Leinster were just unlucky that they didn't have another prop would could come in and do a job.

You're absolutely right, lets just ignore the fact there were no Ireland players playing tonight.

Duck, i have a theory about the 23 man international squads. I don't think the IRB can use them internationals yet because SANZAR doesn't use them in superugby, until then i don't think they can do it.

out of interest Dullonien, would you have Bevington, Gill, James or Mitchell on the Wales bench as prop?

I'd have Paul James because he plays both sides. I know Jenkins can as well, but Jenkins becomes far less effective in the loose when he has to play on the tight.

If we moved to 23 man squads then I'd probably have Bevington and Mitchell. Paul James has done incredibly well for us over the past few seasons when Jenkins or Adam have been out, but he's not great around the park, and for a strong scrummager he seems to get on the wrong side of a lot of ref's, evidenced today by giving away a few needless penalties at scum time.

I still maintain that Bevington is the second best looshead in Wales. I think the Ospreys need to start picking him as first choice. His scrummaging is improving all the time, and he's very good in the loose. Gill did well against Ireland mind, so that's at least three good quality loosheads we've got.
