RaboDirect Pro 12 Final - Leinster vs Ospreys - 27/05/2012

Btw though usually don't agree with what Poite does you can't give a penalty try without the team having the forward momentum which makes a try inevitable.

Well if Leinster are deemed to have taken the scrum down before forward momentum is allowed then of course you can give a penalty try. Forward momentum has nothing to do with it, becuause Leinster taking down the scrum was their way of dealing with the pressure instead of doing what they should and take some backwards steps.

The ref has had no control over this game, and players are getting riled up.

That was a crucial part of the game, and the ref made a complete mess of it. The Ospreys should have gone in at half time at either 1 or 3 point behind, with about 9mins of a man extra when the second half kicked off. Instead they go in 8 points behind, and barely what 6-7mins of a man-up? Really is a joke!

No, he only said that he could.
Five straight penalties. How is that not a penalty try?

He said he can't award the penalty try (didnt give a reason) just said that he could give out more yellow cards.. was gonna say how wasn't it a penalty try after the 3rd penalty I dont know tbh :/

I'm not saying this is right but the reason Poite didn't award the PT was because the Ospreys never in reality got the drive on more than once, thus meaning that Poite could not determine that the Ospreys would have probably scored a try.

I personally would have awarded a PT because in my opinion its clear that Leinster were stopping the drive illegally and so stopping a probable try. I do however think that the final scrum was a penalty to Leinster and in fact was the one prior to it was a penalty to Leinster as in both cases jones slipped his bind on McGrath however that's not really fair or relevant because a penalty should have been awarded.

They couldn't get a drive on as the scrum was going down before it was set.. How could they drive forward whilst going down?

As soon as he said he couldn't give a PT, it was clear that Leinster would get away with their ****eryduckerydoo.
If Leinster (or any side) are pulling the scrum down before there is forward momentum, repeatedly, does that mean there can be no PT?

Debatable. To award a penalty try, the ref must be certain that a try was going to be scored. He can't be if the scrum isn't going forward. I'm not condoning the decision, but I can see where he's coming from.

But I'll say it again, the O's should have gone wide. It should have become apparent after 3 or 4 goes that they weren't going to get the decision of Poite, so take the overlap.

That's exactly why I said if you had read my full post that I would have awarded a PT!

It's incredibly easy to make the arguement that Leinster weren't purposely dropping the scrum. They probably were but they were very smart in the way they did it taking a leaf out of the Aussies book.

Anyway as Feic said if the Ospreys were smart they'd have spun it Nacewa went into flanker and D'arcy came over to cover the wing. It's a simple overlap. Players are also going to get riled up easier because of the heat. HVM shouldn't have been yellowed anyway he was talking to White for ages then a 50/50 penalty happens the other side incurring a yellow.

You got the try now anyway.

I understand that, but you see it all the time. There's no way of the O's getting forward momentum if the scrum isn't allowed to get started.

Ref bottled it earlier in the half by not awarding a yellow after Bishop picking up D-Arcy's dropped pass. What are the O's meant to do?

I feel even if Leinster put 40 points on the opposition we will still not be allowed to say we are deserved victors after that.. despite it being reffed reasonably well from what I've gathered

Fair play to the O's. Could have fallen to pieces after that decision (like I did lol), instead come out and scored a great try.

Edit. Then Fussell does something silly to hand 3 point over.

Ashley Beck is quality.

Good kick from sexton there, 20-16 now.

BRAD THORN!!!

Webb having a good game as well. Beck really is quality, can't wait to see him play for Wales with Jon Davies outside him.
